Currency

The use of the term graken for the nation's currency has centuries-old roots in Afhonikkwn culture. When interpreted literally, the word refers to the shells of small snails that inhabit most of the region's lakes, rivers, and streams. It is believed to have been derived as a form of onomatopoeia related to the sound of the shells clacking together when carried in sacks or pouches. Historically, these would have been painted, carved, or otherwise marked for use as currency among the Afhonikkwn. While the use of these shells themselves has since faded, present coinage and bills often prominently feature engravings or illustrations of the shells, and certain rural communities maintain their use for local transactions.
