The Royal Household

The Nord-Brutlandese royal household refers to the monarch and the royal family of Brutland and Norden, and the associated staff.

The Royal Family

The Nord-Brutlandese Royal Family consists of the dynastic family of the monarch. According to the laws governing the nobility in Brutland and Norden, all descendants of the current monarch’s third patrilineal ancestor are considered members of the Royal Family and have the right to be addressed L’Inze Reala (“His/Her Royal Highness”, which is a gender-neutral term), use the surname suffix di Norden e Marchòbrutellia (“of Brutland and Norden”), and be accorded several other benefits, such as noble rights, a diplomatic passport, and using purple car license tags. By this definition, all descendants of King Simon V (the great-grandfather of the current monarch King Kyle II) are technically members of the royal family. Exceptions to this definition are members who married commoners, as nobles (other than heirs-apparent) who enter into morganatic marriages automatically lose their noble status. In addition the current Lord Protector is considered a member of the Royal Family when performing his/her official duties.

In popular perception, however, the term royal family is usually restricted to the King and his immediate family. This includes the Queen Mother Charlotte II, and King Kyle’s three other siblings.

The current royal family belongs to the House of Brutland and Norden, the only ruling dynasty the country has had. The current ruling family traces their roots to the jarls of Tråskerborg (Borgòrinna di Trascara) and the lords of La Baviera in the grant of Trascara, who eventually united the country within the course of fourteen centuries. Curiously, members of the royal family do not have surnames, and di Norden e Marchòbrutellia is treated as their surname for purposes when such is needed.

The Royal Trust

The royal family of Brutland and Norden is the richest family in the country, with assets exceeding £100 billion, owning one-fifth of the country’s land area, and having stakes in various large corporations. Perhaps not surprisingly, the members of the royal family are also the country’s largest taxpayers, and are one of the few people to qualify for the wealth tax. On land holdings alone, the Royal Trust pays property taxes in all of the 142 grant-level jurisdictions that levy such and pays communal property taxes in 71% of the communes of Brutland and Norden.

With the large amount of assets, and taxes to pay, King Chester II organized the Royal Trust in 1900, a royal company that manages the assets of the Royal Family and pays the taxes. The Royal Trust also is involved in disbursing grants to organizations, charities, and institutions supported by the monarchy. Despite the large burden of taxation and the wide variety of charitable works undertaken by the Royal Trust, it still manages to turn a modest profit, making the fund larger and larger each year.

the Royal Household

The Royal Household encompasses the support staff of the Royal Family. Despite the official definition of the Royal Family, the Royal Household supports only the King and his immediate family; the other cadet branches are supported by their respective duchies and counties.

The Royal Household used to be very big, with almost a thousand positions appointed by the King. However, a reorganization of the Royal Household by King Kyle the Fair in 1869, coupled by the reforms by King Chester II in 1919 led to these positions reduced to a dozen.

The Lord Protector
The Lord Protector is considered a member of the Royal Family. Chosen at a young age from the members of the nobility, the Lord Protector is adopted by the Royal Family. Typically of the same age as the monarch, the Lord Protector serves as the companion and best friend of the young heir apparent, becomes the Linkwhipping boy, and as his title suggests, becomes the protector and guard of the King during his reign. The Lord Protector commands the Royal Pannondrian Guards and castle security, and is primarily responsible for the monarch’s physical safety.

The Lord Protector is typically chosen from the ducal houses of Padania, Trascara, Capitanata, and Seppa. The current Lord Protector is Grand Marquess Adam IV of Trascara, heir-apparent to the ducal seat of Trascara.

The Lord Chamberlain
The Lord Chamberlain is responsible for organizing the activities of the court upon the instructions of the King and/or the Royal Family. Events such as the Royal Blind Date, birthday celebrations, receiving the accreditation of foreign ambassadors, and other court activities are planned with the Lord Chamberlain. The domestic workings of the Household are also the responsibility of the Lord Chamberlain. The current Lord Chamberlain is Baronet Lamberto Bricanello of the Duglie.

The Royal Secretaries
The Royal Secretary is responsible for the official communications transmitted to and from the monarch’s office. Official transactions with the monarch pass through the Royal Secretary. The King maintains three Royal Secretaries, each dealing with Brutland and Norden, Arnautia, and Ceretania. The current Royal Secretaries are Baronetess Carina Brizola of Rucca (for Brutland and Norden), Count Latabár Árpád (for Arnautia), and Bríci Senserrich de Paretstortes (for Ceretania).

Keeper of the Royal Purse
The Keeper of the Royal Purse is responsible for the royal family’s finances, and manages the Royal Trust. The immense wealth of the Nord-Brutlandese royal family means that this is the position with the most number of subordinates. The Comptroller is responsible for computing the amount of tax the royal family must pay – computed and negotiated with the Ministry of the Treasury. The Chief Treasurers (one for each province and the Union Territories) are responsible for collecting the income of the Royal Trust. The Royal Disburser distributes funds to the fifteen thousand organizations, institutions, and charitable organizations that being supported by the royal family. The Chief Investor manages the excess funds of the Royal Trust and their investments. All of these positions are being held by members of the Royal Family. The Current Keeper of the Royal Purse is Queen Mother Charlotte II, assisted by Antonella II LaGuardia, Lady of Doro (Comptroller), Viscount Daniele Falcetta of Piadana-Stellago-Potti (Chief Treasurer for Brutland), Duke Cestre Morcone of Pennino (Chief Treasurer for Norden), Grand Marquess Vittorio Canuccone of Trefini and Campedusa (Chief Treasurer for the Union Territories), Prince Bryce of Brutland and Norden (Royal Disburser), and Marquess Carlo Bartonella of the Frento (Chief Investor).
