Speaker Before Election: Rayekka (TPU)

Speaker After Election: Rayekka (TPU)

The April 2019 Thaecia House of Commons Election was held from April 29th to May 1st 2019 to elect 7 members to the House of Commons. This was the 2nd Election for the House of Commons in Thaecian history.

Polls had been predicting a win for the Thaecian Progressive Union, which was expected to mantain 4 to 5 seats, while the Thaecian Solidarity Party and Pirate Party of Thaecia were both expected to gather one seat each. The TPU was expected to mantain it's high majority due to the popularity of Speaker of the House of Commons Rayekka, who had managed to set up a good precedent as to how the legislature should work.

On April 27th a poll was organised by independent journalist Levantx, which gave the TPU a lead with 59% of the votes, while the TSP and PPT gathered 24% and 18% respectively, although it must be noted that the poll was based on party voting rather then the individual voting system utilised in Thaecia, and so did not include any option for independents. On April 24th an indirect poll was also organised by Pirate Party Chairman and Senator Cerdenia, who always organised weekly polls based on party membership. This poll gave the TPU a lead with 53%, while the TSP and PPT gathered 24% and 23% respectively. Overall under all results the TPU was expected to retain it's majority, the major doubt was which minor party would take the lead as the main opposition, and whether the TPU majority would be of 4 or 5 seats.

Contesting Political Parties and Individuals

Overview

The three political parties to participate on the elections were the Thaecian Progressive Union (5 candidates) the Thaecian Solidarity Party (2 candidates) and the Pirate Party of Thaecia (2 candidates), two independent candidates also registered to run (Rhyssua and Conasta). Both the Thaecian Progressive Union and Thaecian Solidarity Party sent everyone who wanted to register as a candidate to the election, while the Pirate Party of Thaecia had an internal party primary and opted to only send 2 candidates to avoid vote splitting.

Thaecian Progressive Union

The Thaecian Progressive Union nominated a total of 5 candidates to the House of Commons elections, them being: Rayekka [Incumbent], The marconian state [Incumbent], West aldbund [Incumbent], Elbaron [Incumbent] and Areslia. Popular MP and Foreign Affairs Minister Korsinia decided not go for reelection in order to focus his efforts on the Foreign Affairs Ministry. The party also had it's own internal primaries, however they ended up not accounting for much due to all contenders being nominated candidates. Notable performances include those of candidate Areslia, who campaigned hard on "change", contradicting his own party MPs who had lead the House of Commons for the 2 last months and leading to him being criticized, however even then he still managed to obtain a sizeable amount of suppport.

Thaecian Solidarity Party

The Thaecian Solidarity Party nominated a total of 2 candidates to the House of Commons elections, them being: Lemonadia [Incumbent] and Franciscan monks. The party ended up not performing well on the election, and ended up losing it's only seat. In addition candidate Franciscan monks ended up leaving the region before the end of the elections, thus disqualifing his candidacy. The party ended up not having internal primaries due to it only having 2 candidates.

Pirate Party of Thaecia

The Pirate Party of Thaecia nominated a total of 2 candidates to the House of Commons elections, them being: Fishergate and Arirang hill. The party organised internal primaries on April 25th, with the objective of only nominating 2 candidates in order to avoid vote splitting. The internal primaries had 3 candidates (The two listed before and Oodua), the results were Fishergate and Arirang Hill getting 2 votes each, while Oodua getting 1. Ultimately the strategy proved successful, with the PPT managing to elect it's two candidates and achieving 4% more support then predicted by polls.

Independents

Running as independents were candidates Conasta and Rhyssua, Incumbent Independent MP and Roleplay Minister Great memel opted not to run for reelection for unknown reasons. Participation of independents on this election was small, with Rhyssua being the only one to achieve a sizeable amount of support, while Conasta receiving no votes. In the end no independent got elected and this marked the 1st time in Thaecian history in which no independents had any representation in the legislative branch.
