Pirate Party of Thaecia (PPT) [2, OLD]

Overview

The Pirate Party of Thaecia (PPT) is a pro-reform, soft-isolationist and anti-establishment political party in Thaecia. The party prouds itself on it's direct democracy policies which allow all members of the party to participate in major party decisions. The main beliefs of the party are:

Home Affairs

  1. Direct Democracy: All thaecian citizens should be guaranteed the right to vote on important regional issues. As such we believe matters such as whether we should keep the regional military, expand the Thaecian Parliament, amend the constitution or changes to the form of government should be decided through region-wide referenda.

  2. Freedom of Speech and of the Press: The Pirate Party of Thaecia believes in absolute freedom of speech and freedom of the press, so long as it doesen't violate any of NationStates' rules. The party will make opposition to any sort of amendment to the constitution, or regional law, which attempts to undermine any of these rights, seeing as they can be easily abused and used by a government to restrict individual liberties.

  3. Pro Immigration: We believe that, generally speaking, most immigration is beneficial to regions in NationStates. That being said, the government should still watch out to mass migration from a single specific region, seeing as in the past there have been attempts by foreigners to move with a group of friends and acquire huge influence in the region with little effort.

  4. Electoral Commission: The Pirate Party believes the Electoral Commission should be transformed into more of a council rather then a one-man institution. We believe that, while there should be a main Electoral Commissioner, the current system lacks transparency as the Deputy and Assistant Electoral Commissioners have no access to election results until close to the conclusion of the electoral process. As such we suppor reforming the system to increase transparency in our democratic process.

  5. Support for Unicameralism: The Pirate Party believes that the current system of bicameralism present in Thaecia is inefficient, as it ends up dividing representatives between chambers in a small congress and undermining the whole idea of checks and balances due to the lack of representatives leading to little debate and inactivity in one chamber or the other. As such the party pushes for a region-wide referendum on Unicameralism X Bicameralism, in which the party will campaign in favour of Unicameralism. Should the Unicameralist option be defeated the party will respect the will of the people and no new referendum should be held on the issue for a year, instead the party will seek to work out a compromise with the bicameralists.

  6. Legislature Voting Reform: The Pirates believe we should have voting reform for House of Commons and Senate elections. While the STV is a good system in a way which allows voters to choose their preferred choice rather then vote based on partisanship, the nature of so many candidates running in an election means that many times the most popular candidate can get more then double what he needs to be elected, meaning a huge chunk of the electorate is in a certain way wasting their votes. As such the Pirate Party supports the introduction of a brazilian-styled voting system, in which voters vote for candidates individually, however should a candidate receive more votes then he needs to be elected the votes are transferred to the next candidate from the same party with the highest amount of votes, with the process being repeated until no candidate has more votes then he needs to be elected. This in turn allows for voters to make up their own party lists and to have more freedom over their votes, while no vote would be wasted.

Diplomatic Affairs

  1. Anti Interventionism: We believe that Thaecia should stay completely out of any inter-regional military alliances (both raiding and defending organizations), as we believe they will only cause harm to our diplomatic relations.

  2. Anti-Military Approach: The Pirate Party of Thaecia supports a referendum over the abolishment of the regional military, in which it will campaign in favour of abolishing the military. Throughout time Thaecia has proven to be a politics-focused region, and all attempts to establish a functioning military have failed due to complete public apathy when it comes to the subject. As such the Pirates believe the best course of action is to abolish the institution and instead focus on matters of more importance to our people.

  3. Interregional Relations: The Pirate Party of Thaecia believes that a good way to make use of our embassies is to organise events between our regions as well as to have interaction between our citizens. We see no point in having an embassy if there is no relation at all between our two regions. As such we support a policy which favours embassy building based on utility rather then arbitrary nation requirements.

  4. Introduction of a Regional Sovereignty Amendment: The Pirate Party supports the introduction of a "regional sovereignty" amendment to the Thaecian constitution. This amendment would force the government to hold a referendum in any sort of merger deal with other region, as well as entry into any interregional organisation. Based on previous failed experiences with the Regions Assembly, we believe this is the best way to go foward, so as to allow proper discussion on the topic and so for a good conclusion about it to be reached.

Entertainment and Roleplay Affairs

  1. Non-Intervention in Roleplay: The Pirate Party of Thaecia believes that the government should generally not intervene on internal Roleplay policy, and believes that the Roleplay Minister, along with a roleplay staff selected by the minister, should manage internal Roleplay policies.

  2. Roleplay-Style: As a part of our direct democracy policy, we believe that the Roleplay Minister should organize polls for roleplayers about the style of RP that the region should follow.

  3. Regional Events: The Pirate Party of Thaecia supports the establishment of monthly events organized by the Culture Minister, in order to promote regional activity. These events can range from simple games to debates over political issues.

  4. Regional Polls: The Pirate Party of Thaecia believes regional polls are a good way to generate discussion and activity, however we believe our polls should be less focused on specific countries, seeing as Thaecia is a diverse community with people from all around the world.

Justice Affairs

  1. Anti Copyright Laws: The Pirate Party of Thaecia opposes any attempts to establish copyright laws in the region, such as copyright laws for party logos or private companies. We believe such restrictions are unnecessary and restrictive to the liberty of our citizens. We instead advocate for public boycott against actual "unfair" usage of content created by someone else.

  2. Judicial Independence: The Pirates strongly believe in an impartial and qualified Judiciary. We believe any nominees for judicial positions must have previously been long-time citizens with a good record of independence and no major involvement in partisan disputes.

  3. Opposition to Lower Courts: The Pirate Party of Thaecia opposes the creation of Lower Courts, we believe they are unnecessary due to there being historically few court cases, allowing the court to act quickly enough when necessary.

  4. Mock Cases: The Pirate Party of Thaecia believes that the occasional organisation of "mock cases" by the Justice Ministry in colaboration with the High Court would be a good idea so as to allow for citizens to learn more about our Judicial Branch as well as participate.

Should the Captain resign the First Mate shall become interim Captain until a new one is elected.

  4. No-Confidence Motions: With the support of 25% of members, a no-confidence motion may be brought foward against a member of the Pirate Council. Should a motion be brought foward and 50% + 1 of the party vote no-confidence in the member of the council, the member shall be removed and a new election shall be organised for the post.

  5. Legislators Joining the Party: Should a legislator elected under a different political party want to join the Pirate Party, the legislator shall be required to resign from his position. In the event this happens the legislator will be allowed into the party, and the Pirate Council shall consider allowing the new member to run on the subsequent by-election.

  6. Mergers and Policy Changes: Any member shall be allowed to propose a change for policy or create a new one, which shall then be brough up for a vote either with the support of a Pirate Council member or 20% of the membership. Mergers between the Pirate Party of Thaecia and any other party must receive support of 2/3 of the membership of both merging parties in order to be approved.

  7. Primaries: The Pirate Party shall always run primaries for House of Commons and Senate Elections. Presidential and Prime-Ministerial elections may happen as well if the Pirate Council votes in favour of running a candidate for either. During by-elections the Pirate Council may pick a candidate as oppose to have primaries to allow for a quicker process.
