Infernian Marriage

Version 2.00
Ready...

Luxurian thermæ where courtships are held.

In Infernian culture, marriage is a loosely defined institution and practice taking influences from secular humanist and naturalist traditions. Infernian society doesn’t see the necessity for marriage as grounds to justify a relationship, as marriage merely has state and/or religious connotations that has no bearing on the couple themselves. Therefore, Infernian children are generally raised by cohabiting parents that will most likely never marry. Prince Satan of Ira is the only member of the Stygian Council to be courted, to his wife Princess Lilith of Ira.

By law, Infernia recognises and defines courtships between any number of consenting adults as legitimate; including homosexual and polygamous marriages. Courtship ceremonies customarily take place in public bathhouses or Temples to Reason, if not outdoors. Infernian cultural courtships commonly feature solemn songs, dance, and the exchanging of personal poems, promises and desires. Wedding gifts given typically include gems, jewellery, and desserts such as ice cream or chocolates. The minimum age for legal marriage is twenty. Divorce is entirely legal and takes only one partner to initiate.

However, official courtships are extremely uncommon, with marriage rates as low as 4 out of every 1000 people. Divorce rates are relatively low with only 125 separations for every 1000 unions.
