The Cult of Reason

A Temple to Reason (Templi Rationis) in Superbia.

The Cult of Reason (Infernce: Culti Rationis) is Infernia's established state-sponsored atheistic religion. The Cult encompasses various elements of anticlericalism; including subordination of priests to secular authority and doctrinal heresies both petty and profound. It embraces human reason, ethics, social justice, and philosophical naturalism as the bases of morality and decision making. The Cult's creed is "Libertatem, Æqualitatem, Fraternitatem, an Mortem."

Reason (Ratio) is semi-personified as a being to be celebrated, as the representation of all that is subjectively moral and right. Liberty (Libertas) is often portrayed by a living wo/man, to avoid statuary and idolatry, and symbolizes the beauty of personal freedoms and Man's inherent Free Will. Nature (Naturas) is honoured as the way to understanding the meaning and significance of life, the universe, and everything.

The official nationwide Festival of Reason (Tributi Rationis), held on the First of Buddal, (22nd September) is the epitome of the Infernian way of religion. Massive feasts and gift-giving commemorate inside Temples to Reason to promote good feelings, fortune, and provide advice, optimism, and comfort to life's many hardships and existential insecurities. The festival also promotes critical thinking and civil debate about god(s), chance(s), and fate(s).

Death (Mors) is the depiction of the encroaching eternal sleep. However, the uncertainty and unknowability of an afterlife are used by the Cult of Reason to promote pleasure, love, and the overall betterment of humanity in this life; as it may be the only. Infernian gravestones bear the inscription: "Non fui, fui, non sum, non curo."
