King Macio Sean Alexander Glennwood of Saint Arsenio, or simply King Macio (born 3 May 1981), is seated as the current king of Saint Arsenio, reigning as its 61st monarch, and all other Commonwealth realms and territories since January 22nd, 2012; Macio was born in Wayford, Saint Glennwood, during the reign of his maternal grandfather, King Louis III. He was the first child of the then-Princess Pavonis, Duchess of Sanston, and Nickolas, Duke of Sanston (now Queen Mother Pavonis and King Father Nickolas).

His mother acceded to the throne in 1984 upon the death of her father, Louis III, making the three-year-old Prince Macio the heir apparent. In April 2004, after over four years of courtship, he married Lady Jennifer Talmont, a Saint Arsenian noble and socialite. They have five children: Alexander, Kiara, Henry, DeAndre, and Aaliyah.

When his mother abdicated in January 2012, Macio—then 30 years old—became king of seven independent Commonwealth countries: Saint Arsenio, Castelsareillan, St. Arsenian Virgin Islands, New Arcacia, San Mariana, Verdistan, and Itoman, as well as head of the Commonwealth. Macio has reigned as a constitutional monarch through major national events such as the Somerset scandal of the Baines administration, the 2013-14 Westport city-wide riots, and the elimination of the male-preferential line of succession.

Although he's faced occasional republican sentiment and media criticism of his family—especially after the messy breakdown of his brother's first marriage, his uncle's private meetings with a group of lawmakers, and the 2018 disappearance of a former Delaney Palace official—support for the monarchy in Saint Arsenio has remained consistently high throughout his reign, as does his personal popularity.

Early Life

Macio was born on 3 May 1981, the first child of Princess Pavonis, Duchess of Sanston (later Queen Pavonis), and her husband, Nicholas, Duke of Sanston (later Prince Nicholas, The King Father). His mother was the eldest child of King Louis III and Queen Lollie, and his father was the second of six children of Aldovian aristocrats Claude and Charlotte-Marie Scott. He was cherished by his grandmother, Lollie, whom he affectionately called "Granny Lo", and his regular visits during her serious illness in 1986 were credited in the press with raising her spirits and aiding her recovery.

Macio's two younger siblings, Princess Erica and Prince Quinton, were born in 1987 and 1989. Macio was educated at home under the supervision of his mother and his governess, Nairobi Wells, being moved to private school at the age of 10 in 1991. Wells published a biography of Macio and Erica's childhood years entitled Macio and Erica: Sibling Royalty in 1992, much to the disapproval of the royal family. The book describes Macio's love of sports and dogs, his discipline, and his attitude of taking initiative. Others echoed such observations: Sir Benjamin Ross described Macio when he was eight as "a bright little boy with an equally bright future as king."

Heir Apparent

During his grandfather's reign, Macio was second in the line of succession to the Saint Arsenian throne, behind his mother Princess Pavonis, Duchess of Sanston. Due to line of succession rules at the time, Macio's mother was legally heir-presumptive, as the birth of a male sibling would have displaced her, as well as Macio. When his grandfather died in 1984 and his mother succeeded as monarch, he became first in line to the throne, after his mother. Since Macio was a male and had no older male siblings, he became Heir Apparent.

Macio made his first official address to the nation on his 18th birthday in 1999, which many consider to be one of his most important speeches. Below is an excerpt from his speech:

"With that, I make this promise: I stand before you all, and God, tonight, to swear my full life to your service, and the devoted service of our glorious kingdom and all she stands for, and of our imperial family which we are all related. Whether I live five more years from now, or one hundred, I shall spend every moment of it proudly serving you and our country in any capacity I am able."

Marriage

Macio met his future wife, Lady Jennifer Talmont, in 1997 at a reception celebrating his uncle's marriage to R&B singer Atatiana Bridges. After meeting again at his younger sister's birthday party, Macio said he fell in love with Jennifer and they began personally contacting one another often through telephone and mail. Their engagement was officially announced on 8 June 2003. The engagement attracted some controversy. Because Jennifer had an older brother, she had no financial standing herself due to male-preference primogeniture laws at the time and was previously in a short-lived relationship with actor Damian Brooks. Nadine Crawford wrote, "Some of the Queen's advisors did not think her good enough for him." The Queen, however, showed adoration for Jennifer, describing her as "a beautiful young woman fit to marry my son and, eventually, serve our country as Queen."

Reign

As Queen Pavonis aged and was unable to participate herself, she frequently sent Macio to stand in for her at public events. When he visited Aldovia in February 2002 while his mother was getting over a case of pneumonia, Delaney Palace chief royal physician Robert Channing advised Macio's personal staff to carry a draft accession declaration in case the Queen died or abdicated while he was on tour. On 21 January 2012, at 11:59 am EST, Saint Arsenians and foreign royal enthusiasts tuned in as Queen Pavonis appeared on their T.V. screens in a scheduled address to the nation to announce her abdication, after 28 years, in favor of her son, Prince Macio. He was proclaimed king throughout his realms and permanently moved into Delaney Palace with Jennifer and their children.

The coronation had been being planned since 2002, and Queen Pavonis insisted that it take place the next day. Amid final preparations for the coronation, Prince Quinton told his family he wished to marry Samaria Grant, a divorcée with one son from her previous marriage. Prince Nicholas asked them to wait for a better time; in the words of Macio's private secretary, "their father was naturally sympathetic towards the prince, but I think he thought—more so hoped, really—given time, the situation would burn out naturally." Senior advisors were against the match. Quinton ultimately decided to go through with the marriage. In 2014, he married Samaria Grant, who was created Princess of Allington, the following year. Although they were still allowed to reside at Delaney Palace, King Macio offered them Worthington Cottage as a gift, which they accepted. They had one child, Benjamin, Duke of Allington, and divorced in 2018 after just four years of marriage; both have since remarried.

In the year that followed the messy divorce, parts of phone call transcripts to Prince Quinton and Samaria Grant by Delaney Palace officials and King Macio himself, in which both were repeatedly pressured into separating, were leaked to the public. Zachary Rowland, a former Delaney Palace communications department official, claimed sole responsibility for the leak, leading many to suspect that the royal family played a role in his sudden disappearance. Public outrage at the royal family was further fueled by an exclusive three-part interview in which Grant claimed that she felt "shut out" and "intentionally neglected" by the royal family, and seemed to insinuate that she faced verbal abuse by members of the royal family, though the claims were never proven and Grant has since declined to name anyone.

Early Reign

In October 2013, Saint Arsenio invaded Northern Verdistan on orders from then-Prime Minister Harrison Baines in an unsuccessful attempt to capture the Nopel Canal. Foreign Secretary Beatrice Alexander said Macio was opposed to the invasion. Though Baines initially denied them, he later confirmed Alexander's claims of Macio's opposition to the invasion.

Policial reforms and crisis

Macio toured Southern Verdistan in August 2013, becoming the first Saint Arsenian monarch to visit the communist country since the Saint Arsenian-backed North Verdistan Liberation War. He was received at the airport by President Jesiph Zbrim, and a crowd of thousands greeted him in Astrovia. The visit was met by heavy criticism from conservative media as being "welcoming to anti-free market ideologies". A statement from Delaney Palace calmed most conservative outrage over the visit.

Later that year, then-Prime Minister Harrison Baines requested that King Macio call a snap election at the height of his administration's popularity. Macio declined, saying that such a move would "damage the credibility of the Crown's political neutrality". The Baines administration used Macio's refusal to order a snap election to attack the royal family, and often King Macio himself, accusing him of utilizing his power to "covertly aid the Democratic Party with their political ambitions". The crisis fueled Saint Arsenian republicanism.

A year later, at the height of the 2014 prime ministerial elections, Prince Edward, King Macio's maternal uncle, secretly met with 15 of Prime Minister Baines' campaign aides, along with meetings on numerous occasions with six cabinet ministers, whose names have yet to be released to the public. The exact purpose of the meetings remained unknown, until a 2015 investigation into the Baines administration forced multiple high-ranking officials, including cabinet ministers Hayden Pitts and Jesse Greene, to testify on the meeting's contents. Delaney Palace soon after released a statement condemning the meeting and acquitting King Macio of any knowledge of the meetings.

Dawn of a New Era

Macio addressed the WA General Assembly for the first time in 2014 in his capacity as King of all Commonwealth realms and Head of the Saint Arsenian Commonwealth. The address strengthened Macio's popularity at home and in many countries abroad as he expressed his "peace through strength" beliefs in response to Aldovia's invasion of Luxemstein. The assembly introduced him as "a beacon of true leadership and humility".

By invitation of Castelsareillan president Carly De Luca, he made the first Saint Arsenian state visit to the Republic of Castelsareillan of the 21st century in November 2012. The last time a Saint Arsenian monarch had toured the country was 1989, when his mother toured the country after Hurricane Hugo.
