The Republic of Smart Land is a massive, efficient nation, renowned for its barren, inhospitable landscape, public floggings, and absence of drug laws. The hard-nosed, hard-working, democratic population of 1.983 billion Smart Landians are effectively ruled by a group of massive corporations, who run for political office and provide their well-off citizens with world-class goods and services. Their poorer citizens, however, are mostly starving to death while being urged to go out and get real jobs. The populace has reasonably extensive civil rights, although these are mostly aimed at allowing them to buy whatever they like.

The relatively small, corrupt government juggles the competing demands of Defense, Industry, and Education. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Washington DC. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 8.2%.

The frighteningly efficient Smart Landian economy, worth 241 trillion dollars a year, is broadly diversified and led by the Retail industry, with major contributions from Arms Manufacturing, Gambling, and Information Technology. Black market activity is notable. Average income is an impressive 121,828 dollars, but there is an enormous disparity between incomes, with the richest 10% of citizens earning 743,641 per year while the poor average 8,808, a ratio of 84.4 to 1.

Citizens buy season tickets on a 20-year payment plan, there is something rotten in the state of Smart Land, major internet servers have acquired citizenship, and Leader's recent "I have a dream that we will fight them by raking muck on the beaches" speech seems a little derivative to many. Crime, especially youth-related, is pervasive, with the police force struggling against a lack of funding and a high mortality rate. Smart Land's national animal is the cat, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation.

Smart Land is ranked 179,296th in the world and 8,388th in The North Pacific for Most Stationary, with 12.41236705608 Days.
