The Peerage

The Peerage of Redondo Mundo, established 1947 A.D., takes as its model the Japanese peerage from the Meiji Constitution 1890, like much of the rest of the Constitution of the FSPRM ratified in 1946.

All peers are automatically members of the upper house of parliament, the Assembly of Socialist Premiers. Peerages may be lifetime or hereditary and may be granted or withdrawn at any time. The inheritance stipulations are detailed in “letters patent” provided to the recipient upon ennoblement. The First Citizen has complete discretion in all these matters, including the determination of the ranks and titles of nobility included in the peerage. The constitution stipulates that peers are to be called “Premiers.”. The First Citizen may not ennoble him or herself or any blood relation.

The Peerage of Redondo Mundo does not attach separate status officially on recipients (i.e. the “noble blood” concept) and does not include a gift of real property or feudal-style governance responsibilities (though peerage titles reference a specific FSPRM or colonial locale associated with the person ennobled). Rather, it serves two primary purposes—1) membership for the upper house which operates as a “revising chamber,” and 2) a mechanism of honors for citizens that provides extreme social distinction.

Premierships denote significant social standing upon their holders. Retaining the Japanese Imperial peerage in a socialist state raises eyebrows, but functions as designed in the Feudal era—the most loyal comrades receive titles for devoted service in the government, on the battlefield, in the academy, or with the workers in the factory. The upper chamber is thus comprised of committed socialists of uncompromising loyalty to the state and the revolution where they may serve in cabinet or assist with the legislative revision work of their chamber should they desire to do so.

Peerage titles accrue by courtesy to the legal spouse of the title holder as well, inclusive of same gender spouses (this courtesy does not extend to the spouse any right of membership in the Assembly of Socialist Premiers). All hereditary peerage letters patent issued from 1947 include inheritance rights to the “first born, male of the body, lawfully begotten.” In 1980 this was changed to “first born, lawfully begotten” and again in 2000 to “first born or adopted, lawfully begotten or registered.”
