The United Provinces of The Greater Portuguese Confederation is a huge, efficient nation, notable for its otherworldly petting zoo, irreverence towards religion, and punitive income tax rates. The hard-nosed, cynical, humorless population of 624 million Portuguese are ruled with an iron fist by the dictatorship government, which ensures that no-one outside the party gets too rich. In their personal lives, however, citizens are relatively unoppressed; it remains to be seen whether this is because the government genuinely cares about its people, or if it hasn't gotten around to stamping out civil rights yet.

The medium-sized, corrupt government prioritizes Defense, with Education, Industry, and Law & Order also on the agenda, while Environment receives no funds. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Porto. The average income tax rate is 66.5%, and even higher for the wealthy.

The all-consuming Portuguese economy, worth 82.3 trillion shields a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. However, for those in the know, there is a large, well-organized, fairly diversified black market in Arms Manufacturing, Information Technology, and Automobile Manufacturing. The private sector mostly consists of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, but the government is looking at stamping this out. Average income is an impressive 131,847 shields, and evenly distributed, with the richest citizens earning only 2.0 times as much as the poorest.

The nation is committed to nuclear rearmament, Propaganda and Partisanship 101 is a required class all political candidates must pass before being nominated by their chosen party, leather-clad individuals can be seen walking their slaves in public parks, and all the playground's a stage for Portuguese schoolchildren. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to a capable police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. The Greater Portuguese Confederation's national animal is the iberian lynx, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation.

The Greater Portuguese Confederation is ranked 204,233rd in the world and 6,490th in the Pacific for Largest Basket Weaving Sector, scoring -11.22 on the Hickory Productivity Index.
