PROJECT: GLEIPNIR

.

.
Research Project: AIRBORNE FORTRESS
===========================================================

SYNOPSIS: Giant combat aircraft for devastating firepower, troop deployment, battlefield surveillance, and security purposes where living on the ground may be too dangerous.

Intended to overwhelm enemy targets with its heavy firepower, it uses similiar stealth functions as the Led Zeppelin, but more effective (basically because of its design, radar deflection can 'bounce off' better). The Gleipnir's low-observable, or "stealth", characteristics enable the undetected penetration of sophisticated anti-aircraft defenses and to attack even heavily defended targets. This stealth comes from a combination of reduced acoustic, infrared, visual and radar signatures (multi-spectral camouflage) to evade the various detection systems that could be used to detect and be used to direct attacks against an aircraft. The Gleipnir's stealth enables the reduction of supporting aircraft that are required to provide air cover, Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses and electronic countermeasures, making the bomber a "force multiplier". To reduce optical visibility during daylight flights, the Gleipnir is painted in an anti-reflective paint the Because of its gargantuan size, it cannot use runways to take off, thus necessitating its development as a flying boat. The ship is armed with Shock Wave Ballistic Missile launchers, a Shock Cannon in the ventral area and an optical camouflage system.

Each engine possesses thrust over 20 times that of regular fighter jets. The Shock Wave Ballistic Missile serves as the Gleipnir's main weapon. The Shock Wave Ballistic Missile is a type of modified ballistic missile, hence its name, which carries a small, disposable cyclotron accelerator, akin to the one used by the Gleipnir's other main weapon, the Shock Cannon. The SWBM carries a type of meson "fuel", which is dispersed by the missile upon reaching a target. When the missile impact occurs, the fuel ignites, causing a massive energy explosion. The shockwave spreads in a horizontal motion, destroying any aircraft flying at high altitudes.
As a result of pressure difference, the shockwave is even more effective at low altitudes - use of low altitude SWBM strikes by the Gleipnir are thus unadvisable for wars where minimal civilian casualties/environmental destruction are desired.Due to its sheer size, the craft is capable of being manned by up to 300 personel, each of whom can operate individual machine guns and missile capabilities. The craft possesses multiple bombing bays and missile slots; several of the former are built into the wings.

The Gleipnir is referred to as an airborne fortress not least because of its devastating firepower capability and enourmous payload capacity for ballistic cargo; it is extremely structurally sound.
