The World

The twenty-first century has proven itself to be the most defining era for the planet since the discovery of fire. Following a catastrophic pandemic and the Great Lockdown that ensued, several nations broke off their masters' chains, yearning for liberty. Others managed to extinguish the flames of rebellion, while others, seeking solace and economic and diplomatic security, formed unions with other states. The United States, once enjoying it's uncontested status as a superpower, now faces internal unrest and the rise of an Asian Tiger that is certainly tipping the balance of power its own way. For the rest of the world, it isn't much different; a new cold war is emerging between the Peru-Bolivian Confederation and the Federative Republic of Brazil, paving the way for South America's second major war in less than forty years. In Europe, rebellion and secession has shaped the future of politics in that continent - so far, the nations that once were the United Kingdom and Italy crumbled, unable to cope with the pressure of independentist wishes. France lost its historical region of Brittanny, while Spain has emerged as a dictatorship, which reminisces many of Francisco Franco's days, to crush any anti-government sentiments. In Africa, the East African Union has found its way to becoming the continent's potential great power, putting it at odds with the similarly ambitious nations of South Africa and an angered Egypt that, after losing the Sinai for seemingly the final time to Israel once again, has decided to take the way of militarism and authoritarianism.

As the 2020's come to a close, it is clear that the world will be catapulted into a new ideological battle. An ever-weakening United States is no longer alone as the world's police, that spot has also been occupied by the People's Republic of China, which grows more ambitious with each day that passes to finally replace America as the world's leading power. With the advent of so-called "Neo-Colonialism", as its detractors call it, China has acquired a hold in the developing world, many nations of which have made newfound alliances with China. It is clear that, by the end of this century, the world will emerge extremely different. Whether it will be under American or Chinese domination, no one knows for certain.

A couple of two women of Ikakami and Kitsunemimi origin, Isabella Vargas and Chizu Fuji respectively, have been arrested in the city of Manila, in the Philippines, for almost fatally wounding 24-year-old André Labrador in an encounter between the three earlier Monday. André Labrador, who had an allergy to pepper, was a person with a criminal record including many counts of indecent behavior and harassment to non-human entities; specifically kitsunemimi and ikakami. The couple of women, who were set to be in the Philippines to rest before their marriage just two weeks ahead in Singapore were detained after Fuji pepper sprayed Labrador shortly after he attempted to do indecent advances on Vargas. The Filipino soon collapsed to the ground as his heart condition, coupled with the pre-existing pepper allergy he had meant that death was inminent had paramedics not arrived. And, in effect, his heart stopped before paramedics arrived to the scene, resucitated him and sent him to the hospital where he currently is in the ICU; the terrified couple was soon taken to custody to be interrogated.

Eye-witnesses near the scene state that Labrador touched Vargas in an indecent way before she punched him in the stomach and Fuji pulled out a can of pepper spray and "non-chalantly" sprayed it on his face. At the sight of this, the Manila Police Department has stated that it will keep the two in custody until a court case is heard due to, according to it, the couple could have committed attempted homicide because of the fact he was supposedly already incapacitated before Fuji pepper sprayed him.

Reactions from Tamakunese citizens and even the Minister of Foreign Affairs itself didn't take too long to be heard. In a counter to the Filipino protest that took place in May this year, Tamakunese citizens once again took it to the streets to protest the actions of the Filipino government. In conjuction with the protests, the Tamakunese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that, with help of the Tamakunese-Filipino lobbying group Children of Ikakami, a bail fund will be organized to take the couple out of custody.

The Two

The Two are a pair of nations that have seen themselves rise as global superpowers. Now, with the effects of the Pandemic still lingering on, with effects that include global social unrests, many countries gaining independence, and nations having to bear the pressure of economic distress, these two nations find themselves battling for global political and economic supremacy - one is a nation that successfully conquered the terrible and villainous Red Menace, and the other is a nation that is determined to take on the capitalist tyrant.

Brief History
The United States, for much of its history, has been marked by advancement. Ever since the young thirteen colonies broke off of British rule in 1783, it has always demonstrated an attitude of domination near it's surrounding lands. The race of the Continent begun, and the nation made sure that its rule was to be spread over both ends of the North American continent - America's dominion over it's own continent, and the lands down south, was made firm as the country annexed three-fourths of Mexico following the crushing Mexican defeat in the Mexican-American war. Ever since then, the United States has gone on a path of spreading what it calls liberty all over the world; further exemplified by American domination in a post-Soviet world.

However, the nation still has it's issues. American society has nothing but polarized over the past fifty years; internal strife, especially within minority communities, runs high; the world is more anti-American than ever; corruption scandals shock the nation left and right; and many feel displaced by an unjust and tyrannic economic system. The United States can be best described, as of now, as a "Dying Giant" - the collapse of NATO and the forming of an own European Defense Treaty, excluding it, has severely hampered the United States' capacity to contain threats in Europe and the Middle East.

Today, as the world's balance of power rapidly shifts towards one of the United States' oldest and most prominent enemies, America must do something in order to contain the emerging second Red Menace. Whether the country will exterminate the Red Menace, just like in 1991, or if it will be crushed under the weight of the People's Republic, is uncertain.

Brief History
The People's Republic of China has encountered itself in an ideological, political and economic war against the United States ever since the year of 2018. Many people all across the world call China the world's "Rising Tiger"; with reason. Ever since the Kuomintang was overthrown and forced to retreat to the island of Taiwan and the modern socialist republic was established, China has gone on a path of industrialization and development on a national scale that have catapulted it to be what it is today: One of the world's two superpowers.

However, this gigantic societal and economic development doesn't come with it's drawbacks: China has been almost universally condemned for it's radical authoritarianist measures, the oppression of Tibetans and Uyghurs are only nothing but a few examples of China's blatant violation of human rights. As the world enters a new era of ideological conflict between the Americans and the Chinese, China stands more than prepared to spread it's ideology and way of government to not only the Developing World - where it has successfully acquired a foothold - but in the continent that used to dominate the country's predecessors: Europe.

Strangely, China found itself emboldened and economically benefitted by the Pandemic and the societal and political shockwaves it caused. With separatist groups tearing organisms like NATO and continents like Europe completely apart, China has succesfully located a target on where it'll spread it's ways.

The Four

The Four are a collection of nations that have seen themselves be catapulted into the international stage due to recent events. Whether these nations are influential, will persevere on as future great power, or will crumble away into anarchy - like many nations before them - is entirely uncertain.

Brief History
Emerging as a powerful nation under the illustrious Santa Ana who, after unifying the formerly divided and unstable Spanish colonies, befriended the Empire of Brazil, forging in South America what is known as the Alianza Ilustrada (Illustrious Alliance), as the two nations have dominated South American politics ever since the defeat of a Chilean-Platean coalition in the Pacific War (1879-84). Following this war, the Union, alongside the Empire of Brazil and the later Federative Republican government of Brazil have stood as South America's two most powerful nations. However, most recently, the continent has proven itself unstable, especially with the advent of the catastrophic Great Lockdown that causes economic and sociopolitical shockwaves to this day.

More recently, the Union's dominance over South America has been put to the test. Even if it emerged victorious alongside Colombia, Brazil and the Patagonian Kingdom against it's second war with the Chileans and Rio Plateans, and it's first against the former Venezuelan dictatorship, the country finds itself in an unstable period - marked by an ever-increasing amount of nationalism; domestic opposition to Andean military bases in Chile and Río Plata; increasingly tense relations with its former ally of Brazil; armed opposition against the occupation in some annexed territories in Ecuador, Chile and Río Plata; and the bigger picture of international politics: A bigger picture marked by uncertainty and chaos.

Brief History
Occupying many former western Venezuelan states, the Zulian republic has finally risen as an independent state once again after the Zulian-Venezuelan War of 1831 which put the newly ex-Gran Colombian states of Zulia and Venezuela against one another. The war culminated in 1838 with a Venezuelan victory - ever since, the former independent republic of Zulia held resentment for Venezuela.

Zulia's jump into international politics came at the end of the Pandemic, which had greatly affected the already fragile Venezuelan economy. Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela's president - who was already disliked by a big portion of Venezuelans - suffered even more scrutiny, even by the popular masses who formerly supported him. With the country seemingly erupting into civil war, Maduro ordered the military to crush protests, giving start to the horrific massacres of Caracas, Maracaibo, Ojeda, and Barquisimeto.

It was, effectively, the straw that broke the camel's back. In 2023, Venezuela erupted into all-out civil war, the second in its history. Zulian militias and prominent military leaders soon rose up - they had declared the rebirth of the Zulian Republic. Venezuela falling into a state of utter anarchy, characterized by popular uprisings, destruction of cities and all-around suffering, catapulted the entirety of South America into action - some in favor of Maduro's regime, like Chile, Río Plata, Ecuador, and Guyana, (with arms support of China) and some against like the powerful republics of The Andes, Colombia, and Brazil (with arms support of the United States).

The war ended in the defeat of the Buenos Aires-Santiago-Guyana bloc, and the dream that a big part of people who used to belong to the historical nation of Zulia had been realized: A new Republic, independent from Venezuela, and occupant of the territories it had before its war with and annexation into it. The Federal Government is seated in the capital of New Maracaibo, or former Saint Barbara. As time passes, in a world that grows ever so uncertain, President Arboleda has implemented programs that have seen unparalleled national development and growth of the young Zulian economy. Even with the uncertainty that plague these times, the young country is on it's tracks to becoming a developed, democratic and stable nation - the second and third, specifically, are making the young Caribbean state into more of an oasis in the middle of the scorching desert that is the world.

Brief History
In this post-Pandemic world, perhaps no nations have seen take up the spotlight more than the relatively young Republic that is Tamakuni. In ancient times, the island enjoyed many diverse cultures flourishing, cultures that got reinvigorated and prevailed with the addition of the Kitsunemimi, inmigrants from an ancient Japan who was persecuting the fox-eared minority. Over the course of many generations, come the year 1899, the Archipelago fell under the control of the Empire of Japan, Tamakuni being the first nation to be engulfed by the increasingly more appetitious Empire of the Rising Sun.

And so, until the 'Tamakunese Campaign' as it was called, Tamakuni would go on a period of Japanization which still deeply affects the roots of the nation. One of Tamakuni's most identifying aspects is that, it is, by far, the nation with the largest non-human population. Such lonely condition in the world stage have made Tamakuni a regional oddball in Southeast Asia and, despite the long Japanese military occupation, the country found itself having Japan as it's largest trading partner and one of it's most valuable allies, aside from the United States.

Moreover, the new era the Earth is going through has proven itself to be the catalyst of several new ideologies, ideologies that one would call extreme, emerging in the formerly peaceful country. Many of these lines of thought, defined by the existence of China and how it's viewed as a similarly existential threat to Tamakuni's sheer sovereignty, have been the cause of many conflicts in Southeast Asia and even all-out wars; even before the Pandemic occurred and shifted the international political battleground on it's head, Tamakuni was forced into action against The Philippines to defend one of the most valuable pieces of land in the planet.

A progressively more belligerent and war-hungry Tamakuni, defined by ever-increasing military prowess and independence from it's former "master state", as well as a fervently nationalist and militaristic Prime Minister, will redefine not only Tamakuni's stance in the world - but perhaps also the politics of Asia or even the world.

Brief History
A model of African development and progress, the East African Federation has marked itself as a contender for great power status in the continent rivaling even some of the old powers like Egypt, Nigeria and South Africa. At the time of writing this Fact Book, the Federation has stood firm for half a decade, amidst economic instability that has not only engulfed the African continent, but the entire world. The nation, 3 years after the virus, billions receiving vaccines with almost 4 million dead as a result of the pathogen, has been one of the many nations to reap the benefits of a world with more economic influence coming from the East.

While the foundation of the Federation was shaky at first, as Africa's political situation became uncertain after the Pandemic passed, it is now clear that the Federation's economic prosperity will not stop any time soon. Ranking firm among the world's four fastest economies, East Africa is a country that many call the "Jewel of Africa" - the sights of many of the nation's major cities, Dar es Salaam, Arusha and many others - are becoming examples of succesful economic, health and social policies which have made the country stand apart not only as a nation with exemplary development; but also a nation capable of standing its ground and being able to have it's way in international matters.

However, time will tell how truly stable East Africa will be. Its economic prowess is linked almost entirely to the investment of the Chinese goverment and it's associates, and as such the country is vulnerable to being economically controlled like a puppet. Will East Africa rise forward and become truly economically independent or, become one of the countless economic puppets the red dragon has all across the world is only a question only time has the answer to.
