Commonwealth Navy

In space, somewhat mimicking Imperial doctrine, the Commonwealth has opted to field large numbers of well-rounded battlecruisers as the backbone of its navy, supported by various smaller, more specialized craft, and sometimes accompanied by heavier battleships or carriers. The most common type of Commonwealth Navy task force includes at least one Union-class and several Korolev-class destroyers.

The Union-class battlecruiser is a heavily-armed, well-rounded capital ship that is the backbone of the naval forces of the Terran Commonwealth. The vessel is designed to be able to fill as many roles as possible and pack as much of a punch as possible while still being significantly cheaper and more agile than "traditional" capital ships such as battleships and heavy carriers.

[u][b]Power Generation[/b][/u]
The Union-class relies on twin fusion reactors located near the rear of the ship to power the battlecruiser's many systems.

[u][b]Propulsion[/b][/u]
For rear propulsion, the Union-class uses four large heavy ion thrusters, complemented by ten smaller such engines. The broad surfaces of the ship are dotted with a plethora of smaller ion engines for maneuvering purposes.
 
Like all large ships, the Union-class possesses a Tachyon Drive and accompanying Tachyon Sails for faster-than-light travel.

[u][b]Weapons & Armament[/b][/u]
In terms of guns, the Union-class is armed with six K-20 200mm railguns and ten K-3 30mm gatling autocannons. In terms of missiles and torpedoes, the vessel is armed with four quad guided missile launchers (20 "Sargossa" anti-ship missiles each), and two nuclear missile silos (loaded with Armageddon-class MIRVs) as well as ten defensive SAM launchers, loaded with 400 missiles in total. Much in the style of earlier Octavian warships, the vessel is also armed with a single frontal heavy anti-capital weapon, the M7 "Gustav" Heavy Anti-Capital Cannon, used for combatting larger threats.

[u][b]Armor and Defense[/b][/u]
In terms of armor, the Union-class has the following-

Belt: 355mm (14 inches)
Bulkheads: 355mm (14 inches)
Turrets: 304mm (12 inches)
In terms of point defense, the Union-class relies on six Lorica MPDS turrets, three on top and another three on the bottom.

The ship is also equipped with shield projectors at various locations across the hull. Upon taking enough damage, these can overload and fail, forcing the ship to turn in a manner that the hole in the shield is not exposed to enemy fire, lest the ship take hull damage. Upgraded Union-2 battlecruisers are able to restore function to overloaded shield projectors in the span of approximately 30 seconds, whereas older Union-1s require a full repair of the projector.

[u][b]Communication Tools & Systems[/b][/u]
The vessel possesses radio systems for short-range sublight communications, typically used for communications between multiple ships in a fleet. There is also a Tachyonic Information Relay used for long-range communications. The ship also has a built-in PA system for communication of orders to the crew.

[b]Sensors[/b][/u]
The Union-class possesses a three-layer sensor system that can detect various objects using radar, thermal, and infrared scans. If a sizable object gets too close to the ship, a proximity alarm will sound, though usually the crew will have noticed the object beforehand and maneuvered accordingly.

[u][b]Hangars & docked vessels[/b][/u]
The ship holds four VN-66 `Kestrel` dropships, which can be used to deploy two of the two marine platoons stationed aboard the ship. These dropships are held in hangars near the bottom side of the ship.

The Korolev-class destroyer is generally seen as the "second backbone" of the Commonwealth fleet, as it serves as the primary support and screening craft for Union-classes.
