Etiquette in the Imperial Palace

An orchestra, thirty Castellan Guard on each side of the room, and flags of Thialrer, the House of Knight, and the monarch must be present in any formal room in the Imperial Palace the monarch is to enter. Before the monarch enters the room, all must kneel before the point of entry. The march of the Khagan must be played as the Khagan enters the room. The march concludes when the Khagan sits down in his throne. Once this happens, all may rise.

Languages used officially in the palace include Thialren English, Ancient Thialren, Modern Thialren, Arabic, Aramaic, Greek, Hebrew, Scots, Scots Gaelic, Anglo-Saxon, Kazakh, and Latin. Using the wrong dialect of English or a language not listed will be seen as improper and require a translator. This only applies to conversations in formal rooms, and in events such as banquets. Upon entering the formal room, one must silently bow before the throne of the Khagan.

All food is already present before the entry of the Khagan, though guests are permitted to request additional food from servants. Scratching oneself will get one thrown out. Instead of napkins, all guests are provided with a gold filigreed piece of white cloth called an irqil (pronounced eer-KWILL). This is used for scratching oneself and wiping oneself.

The imperial family eat at their own table, separate from the guests. With the approval of the Khagan, a guest or guests may sit at the imperial family's table. Entertainment, such as operas or fine music is typically present at feasts. After a banquet, the orchestra will typically play various music and the guests will dance. A waltz played to Johann Strauss II's "The Blue Danube" is the traditional first dance selection.

After this, any political matters may be discussed.

Etiquette before the Khagan

Khagan Arrow Knight is the current reigning monarch of Thialrer. The Khagan is recognized as a constitutional monarch mandated to rule by Heaven and is legally the chief of the executive branch of Thialren government and the highest human authority in the nation, and thus respect in the form of a bow, kneel, or kowtow is necessary. The level of kowtow, kneel, or bow varies depending upon status.

  1. Absolute Monarchs: monarchs with a heavenly mandate and absolute control over their nations are seen as slightly superior to the Khagan, and thus no recognition is necessary.

  2. Semi-Constitutional Monarchs: monarchs with a heavenly mandate and significant control over their nations are seen as equal to the Khagan, and thus both must nod in respect for each other.

  3. Constitutional and Non-Independent Monarchs: monarchs with a heavenly mandate who are restricted heavily by their nations or are rulers of a territory of a nation are seen as inferior to the Khagan, and thus must bow before him.

  4. Non-Monarchical Royals: people of royal blood who do not have a heavenly mandate (this includes monarchs without a heavenly mandate) must recognize their inferior status to the Khagan, but as not being simple citizens. Therefore they must bow with a touch of the ground.

  5. Ordinary Citizens and Peasants: people not of royal blood are required to kneel before the Khagan.

  6. Criminals: all criminals are required a full kowtow.

The House of Knight is the current ruling family of Thialrer. Upon coronation, the Khagan must select a successor. The successor must be confirmed with a majority vote from Parliament. If the nominated successor dies before ascending to the throne or Parliament does not confirm them, a different successor must be nominated. The only requirements for a successor are that they are at least 17 years of age, a Protestant Christian, and a human. If, for whatever reason, the successor is not chosen before the Khagan dies or abdicates, Parliament must vote on a successor from within the current ruling family that must fulfill the ordinary requirements.
