History:

Jordan's history goes back thousand of years, however it's true modern history can be traced back to the Treaty of London in 1946 which recognized the Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan as an independent kingdom. King Abdullah I, son of the former Sharif of Mecca and 38th descendant of the Prophet Muhammed, was designated king of Jordan. Abdullah I, while viewed as a moderate by most western leaders, had ambitious intentions to expand Jordan into a kingdom that included all of Palestine and Greater Syria. Thus in 1948, when he had the chance, he joined the aggression on Israel and occupied the West Bank.

Following the occupation, Abdullah I would try and suppress Palestinian self determination by eliminating any identity of Arab Palestinians. The West Bank and East Jerusalem were annexed into Jordan officially in 1949, and Palestinian residents were given Jordanian citizenship. The suppression of the Palestinian identity, and Abdullah's increasing cooperation and friendliness with Western and Israeli officials meant that he quickly lost popularity amongst Palestinians, and in fact gained active hostility towards him by Arab Palestinians. Not only that, but Jordanian Pan Arab officers, demoralized by the defeat of the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, and the British presence within Jordan decided to form 'The Free Officers' organization, inspired by their Egyptian counterparts, to help and expel British presence.

In 1951, King Abdullah I was assassinated by a Palestinian militant, and his son Talal would soon be enthroned as King. Talal enjoyed a warm relationship with the Free Officers, and had ambitious plans to liberalize Jordanian society. January 1952 would see the first step towards by introducing the 1952 constitution, a very liberal one by the region's standards and allowed for a great deal of rights and freedom of expression. King Talal was also deeply anti British in sentiment, and thus he started to forge a close relationship with the Jordanian Free Officers.

Talal however suffered from one major and severe problems, he had schizophrenia. Thus it was decided that King Talal was not fit to preform his duty as King, and that he had to be replaced by his younger son, Prince Hussein. The Jordanian Free Officers were enraged as they felt this was a plot against the nationalist king in favor of more British control. The Free Officers arranged a meeting with King Talal by secret without informing even Talal's closest aid 'Abd Al'Aziz Asfur'. It was decided then and there that the Free Officers would arrange a coup to keep Talal by force and expel British presence in the country.

So in August 11th, 1952, in a parliamentary meeting which was gonna announce the abdication of King Talal, the Free Officers stormed the Parliament, and announced it's dissolution and replacement with the Revolutionary Command Council. Initially, the Free Officers wanted to keep the Hashemite Monarchy, however it was soon clear that their worst fears were true and Talal did indeed have schizophrenia. Thus, a decision was made to get rid of the Monarchy once and for all, and end Jordan's short experiment with Liberalism and instead begin it's way towards implementing Micheal Aflaq's revolutionary new ideology, Ba'athism.
