Earlier this week, NationStates was thrown into darkness, as the world was set ablaze by the second nuclear war of 2017. In the frantic hours before the first missiles took to the air, factional leaders scrambled to establish peace treaties with each other, offering everything from private jet rides to their national dignity to ensure their people's safety. One faction was missing from the scene, however: the victors of the last world war, the Augustin Alliance, which had disbanded only fifteen days before.
...or had it? On August 28th, less than 24 hours before the war began, the member regions of the Augustin Alliance rapidly coalesced back into their former, unified state, and issued an ultimatum: join, or die. With this challenge hanging in the air, the world once again plunged into global thermonuclear warfare, which raged for a mercifully-short 24 hours. At the end, when the smoke had drifted and the wreckage had been cleared away, the world was stunned to find an organization they had taken for dead standing victorious once again.
Over the course of the battle, a number of massive, tightly-coordinated operations were carried out against the joint faction of The West Pacific and Osiris, Syberian Badgers with Caek, with tens of thousands of missiles striking them over the course of a few hours, decimating their forces and dashing their hopes of victory. As the conflict began to draw to a close, another huge operation was carried out in cooperation with the factions UPPERCUT and Potato Alliance against top-ten Atomic Rainbooms, utterly destroying their defensive capacity and sending them to the bottom. Toward the end, UPPERCUT and the Alliance (which were bound to peace by a truce) entered a tense period reminiscent of the Cuban Missile Crisis, with tens of thousand missiles poised to strike, but neither wanting to make the first move. Eventually, hurried diplomatic efforts defused the situation, minutes before the end of the war. All the while, the Alliance shield divisions carried out a highly efficient defensive campaign against incoming missiles, losing only four of the faction's two thousand members to enemy fire, with one more nation taking damage.
While the atmosphere in the coordination center following the Armistice was mostly one of relief and celebration, the command also wanted to publicly express its thanks to several factions: UDS Nuclear Defense Treaty, for their strategic cooperation and assistance; UPPERCUT and Syberian Badgers for being worthy adversaries and keeping everyone on their toes; and Anteria, Potato Alliance, Forest, United Free Alliance, and Friendship and Explosives, for honoring their respective peace agreements.
