History:

The French invasion of North Italy during WWII reached as far east as Venice, though Trieste never fell to the French. The French Army created a puppet state in Venice, finally giving it a taste of independence for the first time in decades. However, after less than a year of existence, the puppet state collapsed as the British Expeditionary Force of Alexandria and the Royal Navy of Alexandria sailed into the Adriatic Sea and retook Venice.

The Venetians were filled with resentment at having a glimpse of freedom, only to have it snatched away. Even as the collaborationist leadership of Venice was burned at the stake by the Pope for their crimes, Venice watched and plotted revenge. They still held out hope that the French would somehow win the war and turn the tide, but as the Pact of Steel took one French city after another, that hope grew thinner and thinner.

When the French at last capitulated, Venice grieved. The Treaty of Brussels, signed the following year, made no mention as to Venice. Convinced that the international stage had abandoned them, Venice decided to take matters into their own hands...and seceded from Italy, creating the New Venetian Republic.
