Cricket

Ever since Team India won the 1983 Cricket World Cup, there has been a big monopoly on which sport is to be followed by the general populace. It is guaranteed that any person you randomly walk into on the street will know most of the names in the playing 11 of any upcoming tour. Apart from that, everyone follows whatever goes on even in the rival teams, mostly Australia, England and New Zealand.

But apart from Cricket, you can safely predict that the other person in conversation would not know anything about any other sport. Cricket is the religion, and Sachin Tendulkar (a well-known retired player) is the god.

There is a trend though, which can very well fix the issue, making more people follow other sports. The popularity of a sport only increases when Indians there get a big win. This has been proven for the T20 format in cricket: India won the 2007 T20 format Cricket World Cup, and it kick-started formation of a regional Cricket tournament, called the Indian Premier League, which rivals major football leagues in the world in total viewership.

Many did think the same way during the finals of the last Women's Cricket World Cup, as it is generally not that popular, but India lost the finals, and nobody has heard what happened in the sector ever since. (I hear Women's Big Bash League is a bigger thing in Australia)

Also there is a new format called T10, which is short enough so that Cricket could be introduced to the Olympics, it is currently being tested in the UAE, but many Cricket-Conservatives say the matches are too short, although such complaints were also there during T20, where an average game is 3 hours long. Yes, other more popular formats last 1-5 days.

Nonetheless, even though India doesn't win anywhere else (except field hockey, which no one follows despite the victories, and also some medals here and there in the Olympics) we do expect a shift in mentality. India hosted the last U-19 Fifa world cup, and following of football has increased drastically over the past 2-3 years. There are now trends such as "My Second Country" as UEFA Euro is nearby
(Do consider that Euro hadn't started by then)

Hello TFI!!

Sundararajya

Hi!

**Fun Fact**: The first person convicted of speeding was going eight mph.
According to Guinness World Records, the first person to be charged with speeding was Walter Arnold of the English village of Paddock Wood, Kent. On Jan. 28, 1896, Arnold was spotted going four times the speed limit in his 19th-century Benz—but since the speed limit at the time was just two miles per hour, that meant he was not going too fast by today's standards. The constable had to chase him down on his bicycle, issuing a ticket for £4 7s and earning Arnold the speedy distinction. For more trivia to impress, here are 40 Random Obscure Facts That Will Make Everyone Think You're a Genius.

The Change in The Mindset Of Indians Regarding Great Historical People

You may know our Hon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but his term as Prime Minister has been drastically different compared to his predecessors. You see, he is only the second prime minister not from the Indian National Congress (The Second Most Dominant Political Party in India) to complete one full 5-year term, and that too not from any coalition with other minor state parties. Still, during the last 7 years, (2 years have passed after he got re-elected) there have been significant changes regarding what we used to think about our leaders.

It is not a Trump-type case though, where we think politics is a clown show, but I'll let you understand: prior to 2014, even I remember holding Jawaharlal Nehru, our first Prime Minister, as one of the greatest men that lived on this planet. Same can be said for Mahatma Gandhi, our said "founding father" and also Mother Teresa, a well known saint from the 90s.

Now, let us look at what the general populace thinks about them now: Nehru was a socialist prime minister who has made a terrible amount of mistakes. He expected the Chinese to maintain Cordial relations, when all they were planning was war. He trusted United Nations to solve the issue regarding Kashmir in 1948 war, and what the UN did was to form a ceasefire line, which wasn't beneficial to India at status quo, Pakistanis were well into our territory, although at that point they were mostly losing ground. (Some say it is confidential as to why approaching UN was necessary for time)

Mahatma Gandhi sued for peace in any state possible. He was the main decision taking body for the Indian National Congress, and he was the one who agreed to pay Pakistan Rs. 550 million as a starting Government Budget, as India inherited its infrastructure from the British. He was cruel to Hindus who had to reside outside mosques, and made them relocate. The same was not done for Muslims who had to reside outside temples. (That was all revealed when Nathuram Godse's final speech was made public)

And Mother Teresa was a Christian Missionary, who made a lot of people convert to Christianity.

But now the change is not often related to the current government although the change was mostly noted recently. When my age in years was below 10, if one could not get any good enough quote of the day to write on the school blackboard, he/she would usually cite "Be the change you wish to see in the world", a well-known quote by Mahatma Gandhi. 14th of November, the birth anniversary of Jawaharlal "Chacha" Nehru was celebrated as "Children's day". We usually didn't get to hear a lot about Mother Teresa, but she is a Nobel Laureate, which is a pretty big deal.

Now the situation is truly very different. Mahatma Gandhi is no more termed as "The Father of The Nation". (I do think people's sensibilities are now more inclined to give this term to Vallabhbhai Patel, a known Congress politician from the Independence era, who united India after the doctrine of letting Princely States choose which new nation to join.) Children's day goes by every year and no one notices.
