One could say that there are at least 10,000 people being held back by a phalanx of Iennic Imperial Guards. Long banners stretch for hundreds of feet saying, "Vestiarque, Isecceque na vieu pai voux" (Vestiarch, Iescech doesn't want you), and, "Contalai plur vailles?" (How many more lives?).

The recent developments in New Dukaine with Arrian rebels and instability with Agoran borders being redrawn at a whim have left the much of the populace of Iescech afraid of the future. They are calling for a new amendment to the Iennic Principal Document that would allow citizens to choose their leader, rather than be passed down through dynastic rule. The proposal is being met with fierce debate on the floor of the Rotunda with those loyal to the dynasty arguing that imperial rule has given way already to democratic reforms in the past, and what Iescech has now preserves the culture and civil liberties at the same time.

Opponents, led by Anton Casiller, argue that the people of Iescech have long been oppressed by the liberal views of urbanites who are more preoccupied with social safety nets than the safety of Iennic peoples and their sovereignty. They argue that too much power has been vested in the Agorament, and it's time for Iescech to bring back the decision-making to Iescech. His supporters are calling for a complete overhaul of the dynasty and for elections to be held for the first time since the founding of Iescech to choose their leader directly.

Gettenfeld wrote:Inspired in part by their comrades in Iescech, countless Gettenfelders have assembled in the Capitol to protest the nation's foreign policy. But, for every man on the picket line, a dozen letters were written to legislators, demanding change.

However, their blame was placed in the legislature and state department, not the monarch. Calls have been made for snap elections, even though one was held like a week ago.

Despite how widespread the movement is, it is extremely fragmented. Different factions call for everything from new elections to overthrowing the monarchy to completely rewriting the constitution. Only time will tell which side has its way.

Iescech wrote:Organizers have swelled to over 50,000 protesters outside of the Imperial Residence, backing up the historic Tarpaitonne Boulevard and traffic comes to a standstill in Ameusois. Subway stations have been clogged with people racing to the Imperial Residence from nearby towns. People abandon cars in the middle of the street, joining into the chants of, "Reform and replace!"

Among the protestors is Anton Casiller, speaking at the Virdegrasse Arena to a crowd of over 120,000.

"It is time for the shackles of the tyrannical dynasty to be broken! No longer will the people of Iescech be broken across the back by an outdated, archaic system, but instead, the system will be broken by the people!"

The audience roars its support and the crowd on the floor stomps on the floor, creating a rumble throughout the arena.

"We will not stand for this injustice, this lack of respect for the sovereignty of Iescech. We give our rights to the Agorament, and in return, we get regulations and taxes for projects that will never benefit us!"

The audience roars louder!

"We, the Iennic people, vow for a day when Iescech is no longer ruled by the rules of the Agorament! Their protections and benefits blind us to their true colors, to steal from the innocent, and to make us weaker. Iescech will not stand for this, and will withdraw funding to the Agorament! I will petition for a special election, and should I be elected, Iescech will no longer have to share the glory with the rest, but the rest will know Iescech's glory!"

A weaker cry, but still fervor runs through the arena.

Gettenfeld wrote:Unsatisfied with the slow and peaceful nature of legislative reform, a number of firebrands from the National Front of Patriotic Corsinians have come out in force in their black and tan uniforms to deliver hateful speeches calling for an immediate Gexit. National Front's membership has been slowly rising in recent times, though they remain on the fringes of the Getten political scene.

Clad in a black leather trench coat and jackboots, Benjamin Oswald steps up to a podium and basks in the raucous applause of his audience in a local pub. After a few moments of preening and posturing, he leans into the microphone and begins to scream in a shrill voice about the degeneracy of the foreign Agorament. His mannerisms and way of speaking would be humorous if his words were not so terrifying. His spittle coats the microphone just as thickly as his words coat his audience with hate. The small, but passionate, throng eats up his words gluttonously, starving for more.

"The foreign, degenerate, liberal, bourgeois intelligentsia have brought our Nation to ruin!" He pauses rattling off strawmen to take a breath,"Every day the greedy hands of foreigners take jobs from our factories, money from our pockets, and independence from our nation!" More frenzied applause is heard. "It is not enough to cast off our chains! We must break them as well! The only path to greatness is through Force! Direct Action is the only way to free our People!"

The applause is not quite as strong as before, but the infectious spirit carries the day. Audience members who are a bit on the fence about armed revolution have their inhibitions swept away by the tide of comradery exuded by the enthralled crowd. They form into parade columns and march proudly into the streets, chanting party slogans and intimidating passerby. They pump their fists and hoot and holler, finally reaching their destination: Panagora Square.

However, they are not alone. Staring them down from the other side of the Square are demonstrators in favor of the Agorament. They are more numerous, but the National Front is more organized. They form into ranks and jeer at the so-called "cucks" showing their support for the Agorament. A particularly violent NF member pulls the pin on a hand grenade, but it slips out of his hand as he tries to throw it. The blast kills him and three other NF supporters. The rest of the men on the Gexit side, however, did not see the grenade be thrown and assume that the Aggies (as they derisively called their opponents) had thrown it. This whips them into a frenzy, and the NF charges headlong into the Aggies' lines, who respond in kind. They meet in the middle of the square, some men even clashing in the fountain in the shadow of the cold, indifferent stone face of the statue of Mole. The Battle of Panagora, as it was to be known, had devolved into an all-out brawl by the time the police had marshaled sufficient resources to break it up.

The death toll stood at five for the NF, and three for the Aggies. Dozens had been injured on both sides, and hundreds arrested. Social media is ablaze with stories from all sides, and every TV was playing it's local station to find out the latest. The entire nation sat on edge as this unprecedented chapter of history unfolded around them.

Iescech wrote:Veronique Aurenbonn sits coldly in her plush chair. Her eyes are fixated on the doors that lead to the balcony overlooking the Residence's courtyard. She can hear the cries of revolution and the thirst for blood in the air. Her aide comes in with the petition for a special election. 50,000 signatures in less than an hour. She shifts in her chair as the news of Anton Casiller's run for the crown is announced by television stations all across Iescech.

She regards her mother's portrait on the far side of the room, staring fiercely into the future, confident in her abilities. Veronique is a mere shadow of her mother's former glory. Had her mother been in the same situation, she would have dealt with it with grace and purpose. But she is not her mother. But to stay Vestiarch, she has to become her mother. She steps out onto the balcony and the deafening cries of "Tyrant!" echo off the Imperial Residence. Her presence makes the crowd surge forward in anger, briefly breaking the line that the Iennic Imperial Guard had made. The protestors who make it through are caught and arrested. Through her podium's microphone, she yells, "Citizens of Iescech! In response to Anton Casiller's candidacy for the crown, I have decided to announce my own campaign to keep my crown!" She is barely audible over the cries of, "Traitor!" at the front of the crowd, but cheers are heard from the back. A large mob has gathered around the Colonnade and has started to scuffle with many of the pro-Casiller demonstrators.

Veronique walks back to her room and considers her options. She decides to call Gettenfeld, Scottian Commonwealth, and Saint Olav to ask if any developments regarding pro-nationalist sentiments in their nations had started yet. Her neighbors will be a good indicator of how her chances for retaining the crown are.

Gettenfeld wrote:After the Battle of Panagora, which has already been irrevocably seared into the public memory, support for both the NF and the Aggies, who style themselves as Panagorists, skyrocketed. All across the nation, local chapters of the NF are springing up and mobilizing, marching in town squares in their Black and Tan uniforms. The Aggies have also begun to publicly identify themselves, though far less ostentatiously. Instead of paramilitary uniforms, they wear cockades and armbands of purple and white. The white is for Peace, and the purple represents Diversity. The Aggies stage peaceful protests across the nation, many times finding themselves sharing a public place with NF. Despite the trading of insults and jeers, and a few rocks, the sides have not yet come to blows due to a beefed up police presence. The national guard stands ready to intervene in all the major cities, but many guardsmen are vocal supporters of one side or another. Only time will tell what will happen as tensions continue to swell.

The streets of Saint Olav is quiet, or at least quiet compared to its neighbors to the west and north. While life mostly continues on as it always has, there are slight signs of change close to the borders. There has been reports of demonstrations of "limited" magnitude outside local government offices, but the official response has been blaming foreign operatives. Any serious danger of mass uprisings as has been seen in neighboring Iescech and Gettenfeld is viewed as "mildly unlikely" by official sources. The apparent cause is the extremely apathetic ways of the majority of the Saint Olav population, mostly content with their civil rights. The few that have actively taken part in protests are usually inspired by foreign movements, and opponents argue that they are also foreign backed. As such, most common citizens of Saint Olav view them simply as people with contorted minds. That might also have something to do with the official news channels labeling dissidents as peoples intent on chaos and anarchy, and that the stability and civil rights prevalent in modern Saint Olav society is a direct result of the neutral and stable governance of the Olavian government.

No official response has been made made regarding the political situations in Saint Olav's neighbors, but unofficial sources have mentioned that any and all persons with complicated pasts are welcome to Saint Olav, as long as they respect its constitutional ways of life.

Gettenfeld wrote:Disenchanted that their cause, which had finally been gaining traction in the legislature, was no longer a political priority, certain members of the Fodla Autonomy Party have begun to quietly acquire arms and ammunition for a planned Rising. However, fierce debate is heard within party meetings as to whether they should fight for Home Rule or Full Independence. The two main armed factions supporting Home Rule are the Fodla Volunteers (FV) and the Insular Republican Army (IRA), along with the support of most of the public. A relatively small, but powerful, faction champions full independence: the Invincible National Liberation Army (INLA), who insist that their name isn't compensating for anything. Both sides are opposed by the Oranje, a group of Dutch planters and immigrants who want to remain part of Gettenfeld at all costs. And because there weren't enough opposing sides already, the Communists have organized into the unintentionally festive Red and Green Brigades (A bit out of season, isn't it?).

Furthermore, the leadership of the IRA has reached an impasse on a number of issues, sparking a civil war between the pro-democracy Provisional IRA, supported by the FV, and the Marxist Red IRA, supported by the R&G.

Perhaps obviously, they are all opposed by the Getten government.

(Yes, I'll make a factbook for reference. And yes, I did make it this convoluted on purpose).

Iescech wrote:Many Iennic citizens are sympathetic to the Oranje, due to the connection between the Dutch immigrants and the Dutch cultural heritage that makes up part of the backbone of Iennic culture.

The situation in Iescech is fairly simple compared to the complexities in Gettenfeld. The citizenry are divided among those who are sympathetic to the government, but want to see a constitutional monarchy where citizens directly vote for the leader, as they already do for the Legislature. There are those who are entirely loyal to the current dynasty and want to see no change with the current government, nicknamed, "Suckers", for their lack of restraint in sucking up to the government. Finally, there are those who support Iescech's exit from Agora and increased autonomy back to Iescech with a democratically elected leader with nationalist sentiments. Since there are no political parties in Iescech, these are simply nicknamed, "Bluefaces", with their faces turning blue when getting into arguments with the opposing side.

Gettenfeld wrote:Michel de Jong, a prominent commander of Oranje, has sent an encoded message to Iennic Intelligence asking for monetary support for their cause, as well as arms. He hopes that his fellow Dutchmen will aid him in defeating those godforsaken potato-eaters.

On the other side of the ideological divide stood Collin MacMichaels, the Big Fella. By his side was Evan O'Valley, the Long Fella. These two men were quite different physically. MacMichaels was a towering beefcake who spoke loudly and exuded confidence and charisma. O'Valley was a lanky, wiry intellectual, more comfortable in a library than a rally. But both men complimented each others strengths and compensated their weaknesses. They were in the midst of a discussion over what course to take to achieve home rule. O'Valley still preferred a diplomatic solution, and believed that armed rebellion would be a net loss for Fodla. MacMichaels, on the other hand, believed that Mainlanders would never respect the cause or take it seriously enough to push home rule through the legislature, so they had to take their independence by force. In the midst of this discussion, a young aide-de-camp ran up to the men, out of breath. "Sirs! We've just intercepted a diplomatic cable en route to Iescech. We believe it came from the Oranje. They are asking the Iennic Government to secretly supply them with arms. What should we do?"

Before MacMichaels can suggest something that will get them all killed, O'Valley says, "We sit on the information until it's a more beneficial time to reveal it. Let's see how the Ienns respond."

The situation in Fodla has not attracted significant attention on the mainland, as NF and Panagorists are still at each other's throats all over Gettenfeld. In spite of this, the Government has issued a blanket statement requesting that there is no foreign military intervention in response to the "mostly peaceful protests" and "exercise of the Constitutional Right to freely assemble".

Based in the Russian and Finnish region's this party wants to establish Scottia as An Utopia for Equal oppotunities and they are expected to gain seats in the Parliament by 2018.

Whether that is a cause for concern we have yet to know.

Gettenfeld wrote:Not wanting to be outdone by a bunch of potato-eating criminals, NF has begun to quietly arm itself as well. As before, the objections of party moderates have been ignored by their fanatic leaders, frothing at the mouth to be part of something big. They attended rally after rally, march after march, starving for the chance to do something big.

That chance would come sooner than most expected. In a secret bomb factory in a dingy basement on the edge of town near Gustavia sat a massive, disenchanted fellow, melancholy and wrathful in equal measure, melodramatic and reserved. He sat tinkering away at a device in his stained sweatpants as half a plate of chicken tendies slowly molded in a forgotten corner. He pauses from his endeavor to check his computer (behind several dozen VPNs, of course) and sees another message calling for vengeance against the Agorament posted on 4Khan. He doesn't seem to grasp the ironic nature of the message, even with the presence of a Mole-themed Pepe. He reads further on the board, gobbling up the forum gluttonously, always craving more. Finally, he posts his nefarious plans on 4Khan. After seeing an overwhelming response of "do it, no balls" and a plethora of Pepe and Wojak memes, his mind is set: he must bomb Panagora Square at the next demonstration.

Gettenfeld wrote:The protest was scheduled for the next day. The Aggies would come out in force, waving purple and white banners, chanting patriotic songs. But what the 4Khan Bomber, as he would soon be known, didn't know was that NF was planning to hold a counter-rally at Panagora the very same day.

In the dead of the night, the 4Khan Bomber snuck out of his mom's basement for the first time in months. He dug holes in the ground, placed improvised explosives in them, and quickly covered them back up. He spooled out wiring to connect them to a trigger. When the Aggies' speaker stood at the podium tomorrow, he would set off a pressure sensor that would simultaneously trigger explosives all around the square. The largest bomb was planted inside the statue of Mole. This was by far the most nefarious device, because while the others would send shrapnel flying, this one would spew napalm on the innocent crowd.

Hours later, in the predawn haze, an EOD team, acting on an anonymous tip, pulls up to the Square. They cordon off the area and evacuate surrounding buildings. After a few tense minutes of cautious searching, they locate one of the bombs in the ground. They carefully dig it up, and follow the wire up to the podium. They see the pressure trigger, and ever so carefully disconnect it. They are successful, and move to every other bomb in turn. They remove all of the devices in the ground, leaving only the bomb in the statue. However, it was hidden incredibly well, and the crew did not detect it.

After the square had be cleared of threats, it was opened back up to the Aggies, who thanked the EOD techs graciously. The speaker of the day steps up to the podium and delivers his speech, a moving and eloquent call for unity and peace. But just as the word "peace" leaves his lips, a remote cell phone trigger sets off the napalm bomb, showering dozens of innocents in burning chemicals. The speaker is quickly shuttled off the stage by security, and the crowd attempts to scatter, trampling several of their compatriots.

Unbeknownst to the 4Khan Bomber, many members of NF had infiltrated the crowd, and had been on the verge of declaring a counter-protest. In a cruel twist of fate, they had gathered most densely around the Statue of Mole. The majority of the dozens of injuries were ironically members of 4Khan's own party.

Iescech wrote:The Iennic government sends an encoded message back to the Oranje in Old Iennic, the closest variation to the Oranje Dutch dialect (and the least widely spoken). However, we would like to invite you to the Imperial Residence for further discussion of this matter."

New dukaine wrote:After months and months, the Government has finally been able to reach a very major peace deal with the notorious, rebellious and infamous Arrians. The deal has been reached after months of fighting and instability and foreign soldiers killed on the battlefield, not even serving their own country. The deal has come to this:

*New Dukaine has been separated into North New Dukaine and South New Dukaine. South New Dukaine is ruled by the Arrians.

*There will be a demilitarized zone at the present day Arrian Border with Dukaine.

*North New Dukaine will rule independently until a deal can be reached to unite both countries.

(OOC: I did this so I could move on to the new RP)
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

North New Dukaine is now in a state of rebuilding. Buildings are coming up and the people are celebrating this new generation of (most likely) peace and prosperity. But, while this is happening, very small protests are occurring of conservatives wanting to be the majority in the government (Minority by 100 seats, Liberal has 300, conservatives have 200). These protests are not bigger because of the wide support of the government, due to the peace deal. Sadly, the Agorament has not recognized the peace deal yet and consider New Dukaine to still be united. Many also think that the Agorament did not do a good job of completely driving out the rebels/terrorists. Many Conservatives are pissed at this move and soon enough the Conservative party splits into two movements that North New Dukaine recognizes.

*Conservative Loyalists - 75 seats, want to stay in the Agorament

*Conservative Leave - 125 seats, Want to leave the Agorament.

Snap elections are said to be announced soon, and because all groups got what they wanted, there are no protests on the streets so peace will last for awhile. After snap elections though, it is expected for protests to increase...

Iescech wrote:Iescech would like to encourage both nations to move as quickly as possible towards reunification, however, will not be officially recognizing the two states as separate, and instead will still recognize the government of North New Dukaine as the official voice of all of New Dukaine.

Gettenfeld wrote:De Jong, unaware that his transmissions were being monitored by the IRA, agrees to a meeting at the Residence. He quickly charters a flight, packs his bags, and gathers a retinue of high-ranking staff officers and boards a small private plane for Iescech. The little plane's propellers sputter and begin to turn, and the little bird taxis down the runway. As it picks up speed, it rustles the bushes and trees around the airstrip. But not all of the rustling is natural: hidden in the bush is a pair of IRA men, preparing a Stinger missile. As the plane starts to leave the ground in short hops and skips, the men level the weapon at the Oranje. The plane begins to climb, ascending quickly, and the IRA men know that their window is closing fast. One man squeezes the trigger, and the missile is off. It streaks through the sky and smacks into the left engine of the ascending plane, which is reduced to little more than scrap in a terrible inferno. The plane quickly careens to one side and it's nose tips down, hurtling back towards the earth. It impacts the airstrip with a colossal thud, and a pillar of flame shoots in all directions.

Iennic money or not, Oranje has been handed a major setback. The IRA's victory, however, will be short lived, as the Oranje are already planning a terrible reprisal...

Iescech wrote:After hearing the news of the death of De Jong, Veronique quickly makes a public statement; "In light of recent events, Iescech would like to ask the government of Gettenfeld to commence a thorough investigation into the matter of the downed craft and prosecute the perpetrators."

Immediately after issuing the statement, Veronique goes back to reading up on the current polls for the special election. It's the first election of this sort in Iescech's history, and social media is eating it up. Polls show that Casiller has averaged 62% of the electorate currently, Veronique trailing at 38% respectively. The trending hashtag is, "#Tyrannyissoyesterday". Veronique is faring better in the Ameusois vicinity and the educated metropolis of Venica, however, still lacks a strong support base anywhere in Iescech.

Gettenfeld wrote:The Getten government publicly assures that it will look into the matter fully. However, certain Conservative MPs and many members of NF have insinuated PM Eithne Fitzgerald, who is from Fodla, secretly sympathizes with the IRA and FV. They claim that she is closing down investigations into Republican actions and fast-tracking litigation against Oranje. If this is true, it would be a major shock to the political system and almost certainly force her resignation.

Gettenfeld wrote:In the small countryside village of Sharoedwhael (known to the Oranje as Sherrodwall), a single church bell tolls lazily to greet another sleepy morning. The townsfolk, almost universally religious, gather in the local church for Sunday mass. The small town does not have it's own courthouse, so the church serves that purpose as well. The Mayor of Sherrodwall, Brian O'Donnell, calls the town meeting to order and welcomes in the town council. Even though Sherrodwall's Irish population exceeds 90%, all but one sitting council member is Oranje. Their first order of business is to vote on which side to support in the Troubles: do they take the side of the IRA, the Oranje, or remain neutral?

They never got the chance to decide. A band of Oranje men comes up to the church and swiftly barricades all but one exit. Next, they set up a machine gun trained at the one remaining exit. Finally, men climb to the roof of the church and throw Molotov cocktails through the windows. The terrified townsfolk scramble to get out, but find that every exit is blocked. Every exit, but one. As the people attempt to jam through the none-to-wide doors, the Oranje machine gun opens up. It's mechanical rattle is drowned out by the screams of men, women, and children; Orange and Green alike. Finally, the machine gun stops. Not because they are done, no. Quite the opposite. Sherrodwallers bodies have piled so high that the door is impassable. Two Oranje men kick down the pile of bodies and spray any survivors with submachine gun fire. Their targets are few and far between.

They seal off the final door and let any wounded suffocate on the smoke. When all is said and done, Oranje has left 360 dead and dying in the Sherrodwall Massacre.

New dukaine wrote:The Acting Prime minister of North New Dukaine has just released a statement.

"This attack today in Gettenfeld has killed many innocent people. The government is condemning both sides of the attacks/Troubles and is instead announcing support for the Getten Army and has sent 5,000 troops to help with peacekeeping."

South New Dukaine is condemning the Oranje attack too for possibly killing Pro Home Rule attackers and is sending 1,500 troops to support the IRA.

South New Dukaine has also lashed out a story on news networks on how Iescech has rejected them and are now threatening war with the country of many different sides. One far righter has reportedly traveled to Iescech with the aim of assasinating both candidates for the crown with others. This is not verified yet.

Gettenfeld wrote:While the Getten government appreciates the show of support from New Dukaine, it politely declines military intervention. We wish to keep the Troubles localized, and international forces would escalate the situation even further.

Iescech wrote:The Inquirer has started to keep track of polls on an extensive Excel spreadsheet with a large table and many charts. Casiller is polling an average 39% in the nation, a large leap for a nationalist in Iescech. Veronique Aurenbonn is polling at 61%, a significant drop in the past three days. The drop is due in part of the threat from South New Dukaine. War is unpopular with the Iennic public. However, the Vestiarch has issued an order to ramp up security in Iescech, including increased surveillance and security measures at airports and train stations. The Public Guard is randomly inspecting IDs of citizens. This has led to a serious approval rating drop by the Iennic public and a benefit for Casiller.

The Iennic government stands firm in its acknowledgement of North New Dukaine as the legitimate government of New Dukaine.

Gettenfeld wrote:In the aftermath of the Panagora Square Bombing, as well as the Sherrodwall Massacre, attention has shifted away from the Agorament Protests and towards the Troubles. This is much to the chagrin of both NF, who's support is rapidly vaporizing, and the Getten Government, who wanted the Troubles to remain confined to Fodla.

On the mainland, the Aggies appear to have triumphed, as NF protests and rallies become few and far between. But, the movement has simply been driven underground, and may still resurface sometime in the future. The biggest reason for their changing luck is the Panagora Square Bombing, which convinced party moderates that NF was far too violent in achieving it's goals, and many see it as a terrorist organization.

Across the Gaelic Sea in Fodla, the Troubles have been receiving wider and wider attention. Ranks on all sides have been consistently swelling as more men, women, and even children take up arms to defend their homes and way of life. Barricades have been erected in cities as blocks turn into battlements. Across the countryside, checkpoints have been set up on major roads, stopping traffic and interrogating any suspected sympathizers for the other side. All across Fodla political murders and assasinations are on the rise. From soldier to politician to innocent civilian, blood is being shed in every corner of Fodla.

In response to the emerging crisis, the Getten Army has dispatched the 1st Parachute Regiment, a crack airborne unit, to the island. They have also marshaled the garrison of northern Fodla, the 42nd Highland Infantry Regiment (Black Watch) to quell the rebellion. The 1st Para has been sent to crack down on rebellion in Blackerpool, while the Black Watch have been deployed to O'Grove.

Almost immediately, the Black Watch has encountered controversy. Home Rule publications have accused them of actively collaborating with and assisting Oranje. Neither Oranje or Black Watch have publicly denied these accusations, which has caused some to believe that their silence is good enough as a confession.

As NF and Panagorists return to their homes, their eyes are fixed on the developing situation in Fodla. As the situation continues to escalate, the Government is becoming harder and harder pressed to find a solution.

After this point, conversation on the RMB turned to discussions of upcoming civic elections and climate change, and the narrative thread appears to have been dropped.

The Constitutional Monarch, who is only a figurehead is Generally Approved of by the populous.

However there's a new party gaining steam, Социалистическая партия Скоттия The Socialist Party of Scottia.

Thousands of Bohemians living on the border of Iescech were now making frequent trips into Taube to purchase cheap goods, and many were staying to take up jobs in construction at a wage much higher than they could find in Bohemia. This was having a serious negative effect on the economy of southern Bohemia, with many local merchants already shutting their doors. Some of the smaller villages on the border were becoming dangerously depopulated, turning into ghost towns in just a handful of weeks. This economic downturn blindsided the Necare officials in Bohemia, who were already scrambling to fill the void left by Marshal Broti's untimely demise. Once again, the only Necare man who seemed to be competent, even if he was not prepared for this eventuality, was George Wesr. Wesr issued a high tariff on all Iennic imports, and ordered the municipal police forces of the effected border towns to open files on as many emigres as they could, so as to keep track of them. He contacted his informers in Taube to begin expanding their spy rings to manage the increased number of marks and potential targets in their AO. But, for all of these countermeasures, Wesr knew the only way he could truly end this crisis was by preventing Bohemians from entering into Iescech in the first place. Border control fell under the purview of the Whiteshirts, his nemesis Vidha Roskus' organization. Wesr would have to convince Roskus to seal the southern frontier.

George Wesr settled into the leather armchair across the cluttered walnut desk from Vidha Roskus in his chief political rival's Prague office. Wesr had never know Roskus to be a disorganized man and, when questioned about the uncharacteristic disarray of his files and documents, Roskus showed a surprising amount of candor. Tears welling in his eyes, though he tried to hide them, Roskus admitted that he was still grieving over Marshal Broti's death. Broti, Roskus felt, was his last and best route to restoring his family honor. A normal man might have felt pity for Roskus, maybe even put aside their politics for the moment and comforted him. But George Wesr saw only opportunity. Wesr casually mentioned that the Ienns were pulling thousands of working class Bohemians over the border into Taube, and that the local business leaders sure would appreciate it if someone were to stop this sapping of their workforce. Roskus connected the dots in his mind and, thinking he came up with the notion himself, decreed that the Whiteshirts would seal the border with Taube. Wesr commended his colleague on his bright idea, mentioning that it would probably help restore his family's standing with the muckety-mucks in southern Bohemia. This promise galvanized Roskus into taking action immediately, sending a memo to the garrisons on the Iennic border to block the roads before Wesr even left the office. Descending the steps into the lobby, a rare smile crossed Wesr's face.

Tommy Knockery had been in the wind for months now. Keeping his head down, he had hopped from city to city, country to country, never staying in one place for too long. The light in his eyes was long gone, as were all of his friends. Lucky. Rose. Taube. All gone. But here he was, still roaming this mortal coil. Tommy had become even more gaunt, as he could hardly bring himself to eat. His days had become mechanical and rote. He'd spend most of his time in local bars, wracking up a tab he never intended to pay off. Sometimes his nights ended with a bar fight or a one night stand, but usually he'd be tossed out onto the street at the end of the night. He saw many of the great cities of the world as a vagrant, wallowing in their seedy underbelly. His clothes were in tatters, his hair had become shaggy and unkempt, and a patchy beard clung to his face. Tommy hardly believed in anything anymore, least of all the shiny idealism that inspired the Taube Revolution.

He was drowning his sorrows in a tavern in Port-au-Prince, at a dive reckoned to be the dingiest in all of Iennic Hispaniola, when he was approached by a beefy man with an eye-patch and many scars. Taking the open stool next to Tommy, he introduced himself as Ives Henri, a filibuster and soldier of fortune. Off of Tommy's disinterested grunt, Ives told him that he had a lucrative contract lined up. Tommy had caught Henri's attention with his military exploits in Taube, and Ives was willing to give Tommy a very generous cut of the payoff if he'd join their company. Tommy, having nothing better to do, inquired about the specifics of the job. Ives told him that he had been contracted by a group of concerned rice plantation owners in Thailand, a colony of the Scottian commonwealth. A peasants' rebellion had broken out against the plantation owners in that part of the world, and the bosses wanted Ives Henri and his men to put it down by force. A year ago, Tommy Knockery would have repudiated this idea entirely, professing support for the oppressed agricultural workers in their liberationary struggle. But Tommy was not the man he was a year ago. Instead, Tommy knocked back the last of his drink and called for another. "Alrighty Ives. When do we leave?"

---------------------------------------------

Edward Toromas, the deposed ruler of Gettenfeld and the last of his name, presided over a grand parade in the central district of Cape Town. The assembed troops would march south to north, symbolizing the nation's commitment to march north and reclaim Edward's throne. It also symbolized Edward's decision to move his residence, and thus the capital, north to Pretoria, which he renamed Toromaia in his family's honor. Once settled in Toromaia, Edward began to review his country's situation. His eighteen regiments of infantry had been raised, and seven more were ordered. They were to be accompanied by three regiments of horse-mounted dragoons, one regiment of marines, a tank regiment, and a squadron of biplanes. By the year's end his ground forces would total 30 regiments, putting nearly 100,000 men under Edward's command. The racial tensions that strained the earlier regiments was somewhat mitigated when junior officer positions began to be filled by native soldiers, but the tension between the volunteers and conscripts still remained, and racial tensions between junior and senior officers began to brew.

The various mines Edward had opened were immensely profitable, giving Edward the funding he needed for his military expansion. He then poured thousands of tons of Bohemian concrete and steel to build up the nearly-nonexistent infrastructure in the country's hinterland, so as to facilitate the movement of diamonds, gold, and metals from the mines to the ports. The mostly European Toromist officers who had followed Edward to Africa were rewarded with lucrative business opportunities and vast tracts of land, becoming a racial aristocracy buttressed by obscene wealth. Grand villas began to dot the countryside, contrasted with the hastily constructed shanty towns that surrounded the mines. Diseases like cholera and typhoid fever ran rampant in the crowded hovels, cutting a deadly path of destruction that ravaged the native workers, but did not enter the gates of the European bosses. The workers felled by disease were quickly replaced by rural migrants and the mines continued to churn out their precious stones and metals day after day, the steep cost in blood notwithstanding.

Fifteen years had passed since the heady days of the Taube uprising. The revolutionary fervor had been quelled, but deep scars remained on the minds and bodies of Gettenfeld. The broken bodies of Tauben veterans lay prostrate in the dingy streets of Gettenfeld and Taube's cities, reduced to mendicancy like so many wounded soldiers before them. The Taube men, though no longer in the flower of their youth, represented the young guard of Gettenfeld's large community of dispossessed war wounded. Because they fought as an irregular force in a foreign civil conflict, the Taube men received no pension. The veterans on the Getten side of the border hardly fared better, as their pension was a pittance, barely enough to buy coal and bread, let alone the expensive medical care so many of them required. In dim alleyways and in the shadows of viaducts the young guard was joined by the old- the broken, aging bodies that build Gettenfeld up to her status as a great power. The Taubens were joined by veterans of the Arrian Intervention, The Troubles, the Panagoran Crisis, and peacekeeping duties in half a hundred places around the world. Though dwindling in numbers, some grey-whiskered veterans of the intervention into the Atravanian Civil War remained, and served as the de facto elders of this parallel society; marginalized though they lived in the beating heart of Gettenfeld.

On the surface, Taube had been a failure and the Getten Civil War wasted an ocean of blood for very little gain. Taube remains under Iennic rule, and today even has an air of normalcy. But the scarred walls and scarred people of Taube serve as a physical memory of the trauma this region suffered nearly a generation ago. New coats of paint and an economic boom distract her people from their pain, but material comforts do not erase the deep scars that still haunt this once sleepy Iennic hinterland.

The Getten Civil War of 1919-1920 was short, but sharp. Divided by factionalism, the numerous sides to this conflict achieved little in terms of strategic gains and grand offensives, but much blood was spilled nonetheless. Retribution became normalized, and escalated rapidly in the countryside. Vengeance for a slain son took another, then a whole family, then a whole village. To the surprise of outsiders, these blood feuds managed to remain along ideological divides and did not descend into ethnic or religious sectarianism. The true death toll of the Civil War cannot be accurately ascertained because, for some of those it cut the most, the War rages on still. The government prefers to publish, in the infrequent times it finds itself forced to acknowledge the Civil War at all, the much lower figure of battlefield casualties, which did not exceed ten thousand. This is deeply disingenuous, however, as the shape of the conflict that gripped Gettenfeld at the turn of the decade was less of a war, and more of a web of interconnected blood feuds, pogroms, massacres, and bouts of localized violence.

In its aftermath, the ruling dynasty was replaced and the economy underwent a massive restructuring. Although on a purely aesthetic level almost nothing had changed- Gettenfeld remained a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary legislature- the fundamental relationship between the masses and Power had been transfigured. The political meta-narrative of the century preceding the Civil War was one of the ascendant mostly-liberal bourgeois securing more and more concessions from the declining mostly-reactionary aristocracy. The system legitimized itself as the realization of Whig historiography, an inevitable progression towards ever greater liberty and enlightenment. This narrative, however, denied historical agency to the laboring masses of Gettenfeld, who often did not see the fruits of these gains. The liberty the liberals sought was primarily economic so, while crumbs of political freedom might filter down to the masses, this liberty mostly took the form of decreased safety regulations and lesser government protections for labor. The Civil War swept away the last vestiges of aristocratic political influence, and demolished the political power of the bourgeois. This void of power was filled by the mass organizations of the organized working class. The economic power of the bourgeois was smashed as well, with massive programs of collectivization pursued across major sectors of the economy all across the nation. In the aftermath of the erection of the CES, many pauperized bourgeois emigrated to South Africa, which remained in the iron grip of Edward Toromas.

The Getten dependency of Bohemia entered the 1920's under the fascist government of the Necare, headed by George Wesr and Vidha Roskus. This unequal partnership- Wesr was always the one with more power- persisted until 1928, when George Wesr suffered a minor stroke. Wesr survived, but during his convalescence Roskus seized sole power in a bloodless palace coup. This move was transparently out of character for the obsequious and sycophantic Roskus, and the involvement of Getten intelligence agents was correctly suspected. George Wesr and his inner circle fled to South Africa, where the Toromist government warmly welcomed them. Vidha Roskus rapidly purged any remaining pro-Wesr elements from the bureaucracy with the help of foreign intelligence agents, and declared an indefinite period of martial law in Bohemia due to the continuing threat of "Wesrite subversives." Just as quickly as he cemented his power, Vidha Roskus' demeanor had been transformed. Roskus had restored the honor of his family name, besmirched by his father so many years ago in the lonely passes of the Hindu Kush. Vidha now held himself with the proud military-aristocratic bearing befitting his class, and acted more decisively as well. The cowardice of years past had been conquered. The new Vidha Roskus was a bold man of action, but also one who had been quietly learning George Wesr's weaselly tricks during all of their years of uneasy collaboration.

After securing power, Roskus reached out to the Getten government to normalize relations. Progress was slow at first, but eventually Roskus negotiated the 1930 Decade Accords, in which he and the Whiteshirts would remain in power in Bohemia so long as they accepted greater economic integration with Gettenfeld and formally returned to the Getten sphere of influence. This was a major diplomatic victory for the new Bohemian leader, and he used his newfound external security to focus on weeding out internal dissent. Roskus worked to clean up the image of the Whiteshirts in the first half of the 1930's, remolding them from roving bands of street thugs to a disciplined national gendarme corps. The Necare were officially removed from sole power in favor of a multi-party National Coalition. However, all the most powerful posts in the NatCol were occupied by Necare men. The remaining members of the NatCol represented an array of right-wing parties, but were essentially political set dressing. Vidha Roskus was elected as Generalissimo of the Whiteshirts, Chairman of the NatCol, and Minister of the Interior, giving him unrivaled political power. Though he was not the official leader of Bohemia on paper, Roskus was the defacto autocrat of the territory. The Roskus situation was not one the Getten government was particularly happy about or keen on supporting, but they much preferred Roskus' rule to Wesr's or, even worse, a costly and long reconstruction period.

George Wesr was blindsided by Roskus' coup, and fled in disarray with his family and closest allies to South Africa. He was accepted by Edward Toromas, Getten King-In-Exile, into the civil service, where his faculties as an administrator advanced his position at lightning speed. After seven years of dedicated service, Edward Toromas appointed Wesr as Prime Minister of South Africa in 1935. Wesr personally found the apartheid system Toromas had set up to be crude and distasteful, but he was seduced by the lucrative profits of the diamond trade. The extraction of precious metals was ramped up further and, as money poured into his purse as he acquired a financial stake in the mines, Wesr forgot all about his opposition to the near-slavery conditions that kept his profit margin high. Wesr increased the budget of Edward's armed forces, investing in a new and modern air force and expanding the Toromist Navy beyond the 20+ year old vessels of the mutineers. Wesr focused his greatest attention of all on building infrastructure in the hinterland. While it did provide greater mobility for rural subjects, the primary purpose of the new rail lines, roads, and canals was the facilitate the transport of raw materials to the ports for the profits of the Toromist elite. George Wesr came to South Africa a weaselly, backstabbing fascist but somehow managed to become even more morally depraved by wholeheartedly embracing the racist apartheid system of the Toromists.

It has been over a decade since the end of the conflict that seemed at the time unending. But it seems that the worst of it is in the past, and there could be some semblance of order for the future of Taube. Act 30: Act of Renaissance, Change of Government, Change of Cartography, was, as was promised by the Vestiarch, “An act of sweeping, long-needed reform to the Iennic state.” The act was the Vestiarch’s response to reconstruct Taube, as well as the rest of Iescech, in the image of a forward-thinking 20th century ruler. However, the limits to that forward-thinking were to be tested at its implementation.

One of the provisions of Act 30 is the creation of a transnational and intercontinental railroad system that was connect the farthest reaches of Iescech and the edges of Gettenfeld. Part of that railway network would be a central convergence point at the border of the two nations, naturally in the province of Taube. This construction would require an immense amount of capital and buy-in from all corner of the nation, dipping into the nation’s coffers partially drained from the long fighting. But as promised, it caused an economic boom in Taube.

Some Getten refugees from the Getten Civil War had fled across the border into Taube or made a more perilous journey across the Adriatic Sea to the shores of Rocha and Naphellene. The numbers were small, estimated to be under 10,000 in total. However small the numbers, the already small villages of Rocha and Naphellene were unable to deal with any number of immigrants, although their cultures shared a great deal in common. Some Getten refugees found happy homes in the villages of the Italian peninsula, while others had to go further, some into the large cities, and some still, farther west into Iescech, or south across the Mediterranean into the deserts of Maghreb.

Bohemian refugees were few and far between since the sealing of borders on the Bohemian side. The occasional mendicant would find himself on the other side of the border, but other than a few minor encounters with inebriated folks, the past numbers of Bohemians crossing the border into Taube were forgotten. However, the ones who did cross over from over a decade ago found themselves in the fringes of society, untrusted by Taubians who were just trying to scrap together their lives. As for the matter of the Bohemian government itself, members of the Iennic government expressed their private concerns to the Vestiarch that the renewal of relations between Gettenfeld and Bohemia could lead to "unprecedented future events". The Vestiarch, while concerned, did not see a proper response to the events unfolding in Bohemia. However, she did send a secret envoy on the ship that George Wesr boarded to South Africa to keep tabs on him.

Donchaknow I'm supposed to be able to have my cake and eat it too?--Says so right in the Agora constitution, on the back of the last page, the part handwritten in black Sharpie. Yep, distinctly says "Brocklandia" and "cake" in the same clause.

No, no, don't go wasting time trying to identify the handwriting. The commitment's already in the constitution, so you have to honor it. But, I might be willing to accept a donation of pie instead.
