I agree, but my answer is 1071, the Battle of Manzikert. If that battle was won by the Byzantines, there would have never been a fourth crusade that would lead to 1453
I am in agreement. But I think the Empire could've still recovered, were it not for the infighting and intrigues of the Palaiologos Era. The decisions by the Emperors and various Hierarchs to bend the knee to the Pope in return for military aid (as evidenced in 1272, and 1439) also badly affected the People's morale, I think.
Not to mention that the crusaders more often alienated the Eastern-Roman people more than they really helped.
Without a doubt; the Crusader States in Greece were terrible.
If you think they were horrible, you should've scene what the Crusaders did when they first arrived in Anatolia!
Is it just me or does a lot of the Fourth Crusade make sense if you see the Western attack on Eastern Rome as an angry response to being shown how backwards you are? The Franks must have felt like steppe people compared to the still-intact classical architecture and art of the Romans.
I wish it were that simple, the Fourth Crusade was just another example of crusaders failing at their jobs and acting stupid. The only reason they even went to Constantinople was to get money to pay of the Venetians because an idiot Byzantine prince thought it was a good idea to promise the Crusaders that he would make Eastern Rome Catholic and lots of money so he could be emperor. (He was almost immediately deposed by native Byzantines and the crusaders went ham on the city)
Also they weren't any Franks anymore. I think your referring to the French and Germans, who normally made up the composition of Crusader armies.
