Oh dear. Even though they were never actually very active here, I really hope that that's just a temporary problem with logging-in in time to keep the nation alive...
It might be good for nations trying to overtake them in any particular stat, admittedly, but it's probably bad for the region's overall rankings...

As many of you know, we have recently been searching for a new cartographer. I am delighted to announce that our new cartographer will be Zamastan who will be assisted by Gardavasque as Associate Cartographer.

I would suggest to the new pair that they speak with Bears Armed about regional ecology while developing the map!

I look forward to seeing what they produce!

Awesome, can't wait to see them in action.

After a long hour of furious typing and erasing, I have completed the first part of my Wikipedia entry. I'd appreciate if you guys could check it out.

Hello Everyone! Gardavasque and I are pleased to serve as the International Democratic Union's new Cartography Team. We are excited for what we have to show you in this new season of the IDU's expansive future. We hope that the new map will be a fun, accessible tool for everyone to enjoy our region in a new, collective, immersive way.

If you would like to see what the map looks like currently, the link is here: https://theidu.us/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&p=20445#p20445.

Applications for locations on the map are not open yet (the thread is locked until more details and fixes have been added to the map), but we will announce it when they are open so everyone can begin claiming spots.

Thanks for your patience, and we look forward to seeing our visual representation of our region grow!

Congratulations, and thanks, to Zamastan and Gardavasque.

Does the ‘Associate Cartographer’ count as a ‘Regional Officer’, and if so what powers should they be assigned (Communications, and Polls? Appearance, too?) and where do they fit into the list?

I’ll get in touch with them in the forum tomorrow.

I would greatly appreciate if Associate Cartographer is granted Regional Officer status alongside myself as Cartographer, but I'll let you use your discretion for what powers. I think Communications and Polls should be sufficient.

New Chancellor Elected
by: Mung Fa
On a historic day, Winston Mosquemound has been elected as the new Chancellor of Essena and Theodore Franklin has become the next President. Why is it so historic? One, this is the first time a political party has held the Chancellorship for a second time consecutively. Two, this is the first time a current President has won the Chancellorship. This historic moment was made possible by a change in the rules because there was a rule that stated the current President could not run in the upcoming election. They would have to wait out 6 years before running for the Chancellorship.

Winston Mosquemound is a man who started out as a businessman and then became the Mayor of Aurora Angeles. He was chosen as the running mate for Chancellor Marcus Harrison because Winston made a name for himself for being outspoken about politics, though he would keep it relatively civil. He also had more experience running a government division than Marcus and was much older as well. As President, he was very reserved but when debating in Congress he would defend Marcus Harrison's and the Civil Liberty's agenda with a fiery passion. Though reserved he does have a way with words and with people though sometimes he can sometimes overwork himself. When campaigning he was nicknamed Grandpa Winny for better or for worse.

Now becoming Chancellor we shall see how well Winston Mosquemound does and we hope that he does a good job for the people of Essena.

New Justices Ascend to the Supreme Court
by: Talia Smalls
In a terrible year, 2 justices have died. Associate Justice Joseph Garland and Associate Justice Ruth B. O'Connor both passed away peacefully in their sleep. Justice Garland passed away in December and Justice O'Connor passed away in January. Both Justices have been on the bench since the Supreme Court was created. As is tradition Chancellor Marcus Harrison has chosen two new Justices; the Justices are Melanie Wu and Valarie Garcia White. With Marcus Harrison's Chancellorship coming to end, he will have had added 3 Justices to the Court. In a historic first Justice Valarie Garcia White will be the youngest Justice on the Supreme Court at the age of 46.

Hello friends!

Forest's fifth annual Photo Contest is beginning, and as has been the case in past years, submissions are open to anyone from our embassy regions. We'd love to see some submissions from y'all! :)

You can find more information here:

.

Forest Photo Contest 2019

.

December is just around the corner, and that means 2019 is coming to an end. Whether you're bracing yourself to eat massive amounts of leftover turkey in a few days or just waiting for 2019 to be over, it's time to look forward to the next year. But wait! The fifth annual Forest Photo Contest is here to spice up the last month of the year!

Here's what you need to know:

🌲 We have four categories once again this year:

  • LinkTrees (this category is permanent each year)

  • LinkAnimals (the first repeat category! We had this one in the first contest back in 2015)

  • LinkReflections (seeing in and through water / glass / mirages / symmetry - whatever meaning inspires you!)

  • LinkCultivation (agriculture, gardening and growth)

🌲 You may submit up to 12 photos total. You may choose how to divide those among the different categories, but please do not submit more than 12.

🌲 Please post your photos in the appropriate thread on our forums, located Linkhere. You may also submit photos in a telegram to Mount Seymour or Lord Dominator.

🌲 The photos must be taken by you, but can be taken at any time (not just during the contest).

🌲 Anyone in Forest or in a region which has an embassy with Forest may submit photographs for the Contest.

🌲 Timing:

  • Submissions will be open from November 24 at 00:00 GMT (7:00pm Nov 23 EST) to December 23rd at 23:59 GMT.

  • Voting will begin on December 24th at 23:59 GMT and end December 31st at 23:59 GMT, so that we will select the winners in the first minutes of 2020!

🌲 Voting will take place on a Google Form. Needless to say, please no puppeteering!

🌲 The photographers with the top three photographs in each category will have their photos acknowledged on our RMB, on our World Factbook Entry, and potentially in our next foreign update. A banner will also be created with a collage of the top photos to applaud the winners, and participants in the competition will be encouraged to add it as their nation's custom banner. Forest's flag will also be changed to the 1st place photos in each category for a week after the Contest.

Now it's time to head out and start photographing! Good luck to everyone!

Any questions about the Contest should be directed to Mount Seymour or Lord Dominator.

Reminder from your Cartography Team!

1. If you would like a place on the new map, you need to fill out your application! Use this link -https://theidu.us/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2088- to go over instructions. Click the link provided in the instructions to submit your application!

2. There is just over a day left to vote for the name of our Map's Central Ocean! You can vote right here on the IDU Region Page - it's directly above the RMB.

It's been a fun process being your cartographer and creating a new map for everyone! I appreciate the majority of you who have been patient with Gardavasque and myself as we work out the kinks and try to develop a more accessible tool for our region! I also appreciate the support and gratitude that has been sent my way so far. It's a lot of work, so every positive thing sent my way is greatly encouraging. Thank you, everyone!

Regional Cartographer,

What does "tenebric" mean? Is it related to "tenebrous"?

Tenebric means “dark, shadowy, gloomy, obscure, murky, or shut off from the light.” It is borrowed from the Medieval Latin word “Tenebrae” which is a liturgical term for a Christian worship service commemorating the death Christ and accompanying grief. I wonder if it makes anyone wish they had voted differently? As an Ocean, I would expect it to be frequently cloudy, gray, and stormy.

That doesn't sound very inviting.
And what about Vitrecan and Porphyric what do those mean?

If "Porphyric" derives from 'Porphyry', as looks likely, then it's probably "Purple".

Oh, very interesting, thanks. I greatly enjoy learning about new words.

So it does seem to be related to "tenebrous," then. Never knew about the liturgical association.

Christos wrote:And what about Vitrecan and Porphyric what do those mean?

"Vitrecan" seems like it would be related to "vitreous":

Of or resembling glass; glassy. Of or relating to the vitreous humor of the eye. (of ceramics) Having a shiny nonporous surface

That's a nice name for a body of water. I have family in Lake Placid, and I always thought that to be a very good name for a lake.

Personally, if we're just going on the sound and "look" of the word, I think "Porphyric" is my favorite name.

I'm surprised no one suggested Central Ocean McOceanface.

Christos wrote:I'm surprised no one suggested Central Ocean McOceanface.

I almost put that up as an option.
