Does the book stay in the hotel room, or is there a near endless supply (from a foundation or some such), and people are encouraged to take the book with them?

If the book is supposed to stay in the room, out of consideration for guests who just stay one night or two, I'd opt for a collection of self-contained short texts that can each be read in its entirety in one evening: An essay collection, a short story collection, or poems.

Good question! I was thinking of the practice in some parts of the states in which charities buy bibles for hotel rooms. I am not sure if this practice exists elsewhere, too. In this tradition, you would leave the bible there for other travelers to use, because you probably have one at home already or just aren't interested. But I would imagine the charities would still be happy if you brought the bible home if you didn't own one and were interested in learning more.

For this thought experiment, we can assume an endless supply.

July Elections

Scheduled elections took place in July for the positions of Senator for Himes West (roleplay) and Senator for Lyonnesse East (houses).

Wille-Harlia of TCP defeated Krystalveil of WIP with 40 votes to 20 to become Senator of Himes West.

Free Las Pinas (MSPP), Thedairos (TCP), and Haivon (WIP) all entered the first race for Lyonnesse East with the conclusion resulting in a runoff between Thedairos and Free Las Pinas as no candidate reached a 50% majority of votes. The ensuing run-off resulted in a tie that then triggered a vote by the Council of Nine to select the new senator, all of this culminating to the election of Thedairos as Senator of Lyonnesse East.

XKI thanks Marxist germany and The United Royal Islands of Euramathania for their previous service. Congratulations to the winners and commiserations to the other candidates.

New Government Appointments

~ July saw the transition of the Culture Office over to now Cultural Officer Grea Kriopia after HumanSanity's resignation following the end of the XKI Summer Olympics.
~ HumanSanity didn't go far though, as he was appointed by Chief Executive Markanite to serve as the first President of the XKI Cards Co-op.
~ As the Co-op President, HumanSanity gained Free Las Pinas and HN67 as Cards Co-op administrators to help oversee the new venture.
~ Free Las Pinas was also brought on as Casino Shift Manager with last month's Casino revitalization and as Deputy Senator for Lyonesse East following the election of Thedairos
~ Senator Grea Kriopia brought on Wischland as Deputy for Blue Canaria North to aid in the creation of this report.
~ Delegate Kuriko hired Ignis cinere onto the TIBOE team as an official endorser to help boost and maintain endorsements.
~ The evergrowing FA team saw HumanSanity made emissary to Founderless.
~ Our Minister of Education The tasmanian islands sought a new Deputy after the election of Wille-Harlia and hired Pacifical.
~ Senator Wille-Harlia also hired Central russia and Margaux as Deputies for Himes West.

Around the Islands

~ Wille-Harlia was named LinkRookie of the Quarter for his exceptional work as a TITO member, Recruiter, and Deputy Minister of Education, among other positions, as well as his outstanding contributions to the forum and A Taco Archipelago's RMB. Congratulations Wille-Harlia!
~ Islanders enjoyed a multitude of potato-based dishes alongside residents of Spiritus, at a LinkPotato Potluck celebration of Kuriko and The Salaxans' achievements as WA Secretary-General and Vice Secretary-General. All participants are several potato recipes richer, with a few even being lucky enough to receive Kuriko and The Salaxalans trading cards.
~ The XKI Card Co-op is making good progress under the guidance of Cards Co-op President HumanSanity, with plans for a transfer card-sharing system and a mentorship program. The hard work of Co-op members has already facilitated the card rewards for several of this month's events.
~ July's LinkFeatured Nation was Free Las Pinas, whose exceptionally high activity in XKI, alongside their work as an Ambassador, TITO member, and Recruiter makes them more than deserving of this honor. Keep up the good work!
~ Cultural Officer Grea Kriopia gave Islanders a chance to express what real-world sights reminded them of NationStates in a LinkPhotography Competition. Congratulations to Wischland for her 1st place Miniatur Wunderland photo, Wille-Harlia for his tasty 2nd place S'more photo, and Eastern New England for their charming Honorable Mention coastal photo.
~At the end of the month, Hakketomat announced XKI's first-ever LinkTacoVision! Inspired by Eurovision, over a dozen eager nations have already submitted songs. Voting begins early August, so be on the look-out for the competition's results in next month's report.

XKI Game-Side

A July regional poll by Jabberwocky forced Islanders to pick a superpower, but clearly all of the disastrous time travel movie plots did not deter many.

July held some contentious topics but here are some more lighthearted posts from this month...

Meet A Nation Interview

This month's edition features an interview with one of the newest elected Senators in XKI, Wille-Harlia, on their time in XKI and future plans for roleplay in the region. Aside from their senate seat, WH also serves as an Emissary, Cultural Office Assistant, Deputy Cartographer, and TITO Member.

GK: Let's start with some of your time here. Being a more recent addition to the Islands, could you talk a bit about what attracted you to XKI?

WH: First, the recruitment telegram I received seemed the most sincere of all of them, and offered the most things. Once I got to XKI, the warm welcome I received was amazing, and no question was stupid. The same thing on the forum and the Discord. Then, when I got into some jobs where I could show my thanks, I knew I would stay for good.

GK: Since you mentioned you liked the variety of things XKI offered, have you developed any favorite activities/hobbies in your time here?

WH: There are some hobbies I have here in XKI. One is RPing in ATA with all the other regular ATAers. One hobby I used to have was refreshing to the Job Opportunities page every day for new jobs I’d be interested in. But I don’t really do that anymore now as I have enough jobs. I will also occasionally Debate in the politics section of the Discord, and I also play in the XKI Minecraft server.

GK: Speaking of hard work, you recently faced your first ever election in XKI, how do you feel now looking back at it?

WH: I was recently elected the Himes West Senator, in charge of RP. Looking back on that campaign, I think I did everything right, but I didn’t even use half of my paid advertisements. I think that once I took an early 15 vote lead, I had it won, but there was still good competition from Krystalveil, as we had very similar platforms.

GK: Could you outline some of your goals for the future of RP in XKI?

WH: I have two goals for XKI RP. The first is to improve the quality of RP in the XKI RP region of A Taco Archipelago. The second is to revive the forum and Discord RP.

GK: Big goals! Are there any future projects you can tease our readers about in regards to RP?

WH: On the Discord, I can tease an Insanity RP event, on the forum, a medieval and a WW3 event, and in ATA, a whole plethora of events that will make up an RP event with a common enemy for all.

GK: Very interesting, what are you most excited for in the future of RP?

WH: I am most excited to see the results of my attempts!

GK: For sure. Lastly, what do you think the biggest challenge will be in regards to your work in RP?

WH: This a challenge that will take thinking to overcome: How to get the game side RPers on the forum and Discord.

Until next month, your XKI Update Staff is signing off - Grea Kriopia and Wischland

It's pleasant that there's no general great rush here to shove any one particular book down the hypothetical hotel guest's throat. Plurality of viewpoints is valuable.

How about an introductory essay collection that covers a somewhat broad field of philosophies? Not an university textbook, but something more entertaining, something a hotel guest might still read in after a long day.

Or, if I were to propose a particular subject matter, something on the method of thinking, on the method of questioning assumptions? I mentioned a couple of cognitive biases above; knowing how these work can be useful to anyone.

Great ideas! Something like Thomas Kida's "Don't Believe Everything You Think: The Six Basic Mistakes We Make In Thinking" or "Plato and a Platypus Walk into a Bar...: Understanding Philosophy Through Jokes" would work.

Techno-titania

A year late but I finished my second book:

Drawing inspiration from the Book of Revelations and post apocalyptic mythology, Metallic Sky is the First of the Five Part Series, Days of Disaster. The world is in turmoil, as it is forced by the machinations of rogue nations China and Russia to deal with the phenomenon known as the Kessler Syndrome. World War 3 erupts as China, Russia and a number of satellite nations seek to turn a world disaster into conquest of long held ambitions in Europe and Asia.

“A few years have passed and where there were once only two thousand satellites revolving around the planet, now there are over 10,000 such orbitals. Private businesses have been quick to take advantage of the benefits these technological wonders offer and have quickly supplanted governments in the race for space among the stars. Amid rising global tensions two nations, China and Russia lead a bevy of others, seeking to take advantage of the discord of the West to realize long anticipated goals by leveling the military and economic playing field dominated by the United States and its allies. This ends up resulting in a global conflict, World War 3.

Using the imminent launch of Taiwan’s first spacecraft, the Chinese fashion a strategy to increase its regional hegemony and enlist the aid of another outsider nipping at the heels of the western nations atop the global food chain. The subsequent debris resulting from the satellite’s destruction cause a kaleidoscope of collisions rendering the satellite network extinct overnight. The chain reaction of events on the ground mirrored that of near space, and though slower to ensue was far more devastating to the way of life of people and the governments that led them threatening the very means of survival for both.”

Would this happen? Could this happen? How would the world react if it did? This sci-fi thriller explores the possibilities of a sudden, violent end to a world gifted with satellites and what happens in a world already on the brink of turmoil on the ground. Could this result in World War 3? What would happen to everyday people at home and abroad?

Posting this on behalf of 10000 Islands' Delegate, relating to today's XKI Discord attack. If anyone here has been banned from the server as a result of this incident, those bans have now been reversed and the server restored (although the archival history is lost). Please feel free to rejoin.

Greetings my fellow NS members. As some of you may have heard, today 10000 Islands was targeted by a person impersonating a member of our Discord moderation team. This impersonator was able to gain access to our entire discord server by impersonating an offline moderator, to the detriment of our region.

This impersonator, once having access to our server, engaged in a destructive action that left our entire server destroyed. All information within our server since it was created in late 2016/early 2017 has been destroyed and is beyond retrieval. Over a dozen members of our server were also banned by them, and we are working on contacting them in order to re-invite them. We ask that the community please have patience while we work go fix what has been destroyed, and if you know anything please contact us.

For this thought experiment, we can assume an endless supply.

I was a chaplain at a Roman Catholic hospital in the late 1980s and this issue came up in particular with regards to the various rooms in the ICUs. As I recall, hospital policy was that any leftover materials in a room like books had to be thrown away after each resident in the ICU because of sanitation policy. If C19 were active in Philosophy 115, I think we'd see hotels throwing out books/tracts/pamplets after each stay. Perhaps on each disposable hotel policy page, a link to specific philosophical publications could be included, perhaps under a simplified system that might be a feature across many platforms.

Unfortunately I had to stay at a hotel recently. Either they had an "endless" supply of bibles or they weren't throwing them out after each stay. But in this day and age I do like the idea of links to publications, or perhaps a hotel app that you download with some publications preloaded into it.

The rose

My husband recently stayed at an upper-end hotel in Columbia, SC. He said it was all VERY sanitary, to the extent that things like TV remotes were freshly-wrapped in plastic.

The remotes were wrapped in plastic in my hotel too (Grand Rapids, MI). "Freshly" wrapped, I can't say, but that is the cynic in me. We stayed for four days though and none of us got COVID, so I can't complain.

Southern alberdale

Sounds like a NationStates issue:

“We should wrap everything in sterile plastic!” Shouts your Minister of Public Sanitation...

How long and precious is life in your NS country??? Vote here.

'All that plastic waste!' groans your Minister of Landfills. 'How about we sterilise the remotes with ultraviolet light? My cousin sells these nifty machines...'

'Is our great nation still stuck in the stone age?' needles your Minister of Technology, flickering your office lights on and off with swipes on her tablet screen. 'Hotel guests can damn well use their own phones; just make all the hotel TVs compatible.'

'Each hotel guest would need a secure password to connect their device to their room's TV.' Your Minister of Tourism is on the brink of tearing out his hair. 'Those lazy concierges will just give every room the same login. Everyone will manipulate each others' devices all across corridors and multiple floors. Can you imagine the chaos? The complaints? The cancellations?! We need a government programme to gift every tourist their own smart phone / TV remote, with a nice logo and a bit of tasteful advertising installed. They'll be back next year, and the year after!'

'TVs? yawns your Minister of Introspection. 'Such a bore. Tourists come to our country to contemplate our landscape and read our philosophical essays. The populace hardly watches any of that crap either. People can listen to the news on the radio. Let's abolish all TVs.'

I select this one. I suspect the result would be a decrease in tourism and the economy but a gain in intelligence and environmental beauty.

You should go for a nation states issues writer job. This made me laugh. :). Super.

I have been doing a few night shifts during COVID (always a joy, I tell ya...) which has (actual positive) given me a lot more time to go back and read some classic books, and a few new ones. Bonus. Paid to read is one of my all time favourite jobs.

Anyway, I wonder if anyone could recommend anything which was worth a good read. Either a book you wish you hadn't read so you could experience that same magic again reading it, or something which really challeneged your thinking. I am open to most books, ideally NOT fiction (unless it is something a little different).

Kolominia

Have you read the Ghost Map by Steven Johnson yet? Despite the evocative title, it is nonfiction and not about ghosts at all. From Amazon.com's blurb:

It's the summer of 1854, and London is just emerging as one of the first modern cities in the world. But lacking the infrastructure-garbage removal, clean water, sewers-necessary to support its rapidly expanding population, the city has become the perfect breeding ground for a terrifying disease no one knows how to cure. As the cholera outbreak takes hold, a physician and a local curate are spurred to action-and ultimately solve the most pressing medical riddle of their time.

In a triumph of multidisciplinary thinking, Johnson illuminates the intertwined histories of the spread of disease, the rise of cities, and the nature of scientific inquiry, offering both a riveting history and a powerful explanation of how it has shaped the world we live in.

New Government Appointments

~ Senator Thedairos appointed Free Las Pinas to serve as their Deputy Senator for Lyonnesse East to help out with maintaining XKI Houses and hosting competitions.
~ As N-Day approaches in September, Haivon was hired to help coordinate N-Day efforts with The Potato Alliance on behalf of XKI.
~ In line with new legislation creating a Discord moderation team separate from XKI government, 10 new appointments were made to the new mod team. You can find the full list of members in the Ministry of Labor payroll.

Around the Islands

~ August's LinkFeatured Nation was Margaux, a prolific roleplayer who has also served in TITO, as a recruiter, and as Deputy Senator for Himes West. Keep up the good work!
~ XKI's first-ever LinkTacoVison, hosted by Hakketomat, was a resounding success, with over 20 participating nations, a Discord listening party, and a live vote count. HN67 proved his excellent music taste with his winning song entry LinkMoney Run Low by The Score. Congrats!
~ Minister of Immigration, THX1138, gave recruiters a chance to win tons of Tacos during the LinkTreasure Beach Summer Recruiter Event. Although the event was briefly interrupted for Accelerator maintenance, recruiters were eager to continue the race to draw in new nations, and the competition has been extended into September.
~ A multitude of fantastic flag designs were submitted for the LinkA Taco Archipelago Flag Contest, sponsored by Taco-Island-Charities. After much consideration, Islanders chose the entry by Free Las Pinas, making it A Taco Archipelago's official flag! Congratulations FLP and thank you to all who participated.
~ Additionally, Taco-Island-Charities is hosting a Short Story Contest on our forums with a taco prize! Find more info Linkhere.
~ The Cultural Office was hard at work this month, introducing two brand new events! First, they asked everyone to put on their thinking caps with a Weekly Riddle competition hosted gameside. They also gave Islander's a chance to share a laugh and snack on popcorn during XKI's first official Linkmovie night, watching Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Big thanks to the Cultural Office Staff for their amazing work!

Islander Achievements

We're trying out a new section for this report, dedicated to the individual achievements and efforts of XKI members. Don't forget to drop by and congratulate them on their success!

~ Blogotopia was ranked as the #6 Top Issue Player early in August. Little wonder, given that they're Number 1 in Welfare, Public Education, and Youth Rebelliousness, and are in the top 0.1% for an astounding 38 stats.
~ Not to be outdone Tzo was ranked as the #4 Top Issue Player in the same dispatch, being first in Intelligence, Culture, and Inclusiveness. They are also in the top 10 ranking for a grand total of 16 stats! Congrats to both of XKI's premier issue players! We hope to see you both continue to rise in the rankings.
~ Paffnia has been busily typing away with his latest issue draft Parking? Lots! Filled with humor and Paff's signature charm, the draft is shaping up nicely for submission. Here in XKI, we're keeping our fingers crossed for a quick publication!
~ Wischland was too humble to mention her own issue drafts when writing this section but she has at least two in the works, Spare a Couple Endorsements, Leader? and Of Wealth and Health, as well as one already submitted! Most definitely a promising career of issue writing in her future and fingers crossed on publishing!
~ Despite being just a few months old in NS, Free Las Pinas has already become an important figure in the realm of trading cards. With a deck valuation at an incredible 2553.78, FLP is already ranked in 100th place for International Artwork. As if that wasn't awesome enough, he's also been a boon to the region with his card mentorship and contributions to the LinkXKI Card Co-op. Thank you FLP, and keep up all the good work!

Meet A Nation Interview

This month we had the pleasure to sit down with a relatively new nation in XKI, Free Las Pinas, and chat about their work in the new XKI Cards Coop that launched recently within the region. Aside from within the Coop, FLP works assisting the XKI Casino, as Ambassador to Texas, and as Deputy Senator for Lyonnesse East.

GK: Thanks for doing this FLP, why do you talk about how you ended up in XKI?

FLP: Like everybody else, I began with founding my nation, which was pretty boring. I did everything most of us probably did. Once I was done with the issues and reading the new policies, I noticed I had a few telegrams. I read through a few and laughed, but what I really liked in particular was this one I got that mentioned me being “a hot commodity”. After reading the telegram in full, I decided to see what 10000 Islands was all about, and thought huh, white-sand beaches and blue-green waves? This region is perfect for me [my nation being an archipelago and all]! So I hit the join button and never looked back.

GK: Of course! Obviously you quickly got involved here, especially in cards, what/who got you into trading cards?

FLP: A few days after my founding, I created new puppets, because I got really bored of waiting hours to answer issues. I soon also applied for the Cultural Office Assistant position, and one thing led to another, I was handling about 50 nations, with half of them devoted to the Cultural Office. With that many nations, I quickly got involved more with cards and I began farming every single day.

GK: So, then what exactly do you do in your new role as a Cards Coop Administrator?

FLP: As of now, I handle the Co-op Mentorship program, wherein I assign members to a mentor and I also teach Co-op members who are new to card farming. I also help in processing recruits, and I’m soon going to handle our Shared Transfer Card System.

GK: Can you explain what the Cards Coop is for those who don't know?

FLP: The Co-op is XKI’s own cards-based organization that stockpiles legendary cards and cards of significant Islanders. We’re mostly based around cooperation, wherein we help each other build collections by allowing members to request any card on our Co-op farms.

GK: Overall, do you feel like the Cards Coop has boosted regional card activity?

FLP: Definitely! These few weeks, we’ve seen individual deck values nearly double or triple for some nations. I became the first Islander to reach 2000 DV on a single nation, then HS beat that record and broke 2500 DV, and now we have Constantinolia who broke 3000, 3500, and now, 4000 DV. Additionally, Megistos has decided to begin on their own NS Sports card collection, which is off to a good start with their massive hoarding of Vilita and Turori cards, wherein they have double the amount that even Vilita has!

GK: That's fantastic! I know the Coop has adopted a more community style of organization and contribution. How do you think the cooperative community model of the Coop impacts the way it functions?

FLP: This cooperative model allows us (the card farmers) to work more flexibly, and again, easily build up collections and contribute to the region. To expand on what I said earlier, Megistos wants to create an NSS card collection. However, it can be exhausting to farm on a hundred puppets every single day, which is where the Co-op comes in. We have a rule of not selling, gifting, or junking cards until 72 hours have passed. This is so our members have an adequate amount of time to look through the cards of other Co-op members and request any cards they'd need for their collection.

GK: Very interesting. Are there any goals for the XKI Cards Coop for the upcoming future?

FLP: One of our goals would be to create an efficient cooperative cards program for any resident of XKI. What I mean by this is that we'd want to give our members access to a huge supply of cards to build up their collections. It's important not only because it creates a community in itself, but also because of the potential incentive for new players looking to create a huge card collection or help out around the region. We've started off with the Mentorship program, wherein HS and I suggest scripts and give tips on how to farm more efficiently, how to transfer more bank, etc. How I see it, there's no big rush on this. While I know it'd be fun to host events and have some fun with our legendary cards stockpile, I'd prefer we take it slow. After all, if we party now, we'll have nothing left for later!

GK: Those sound like great goals, and definitely good long term planning for the future. To wrap things up on a lighter note, what's been your favorite lucky pull so far?

FLP: By far, it has to be when I pulled a Testlandia. It was one of the first legendary cards I pulled, and when I saw that huge spike in my deck value, I couldn't help but keep going!

Hail friends! Nuke Day is here once again and I reach out to you today to join the Horsemen of the Apocalypse! We won last year and plan to do it again!

I welcome you to pin the Factbook to your WFE if you wanna join as a member region.

“We impose order on the chaos of faction evolution. You exist because we allow it, and you will end because we demand it.”
- The Stalker when asked the purpose of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

The non-aggression pact, the shameless megafaction, the backroom agreement, these are the tools of cowards and weaklings. True glory rests in the hands of those who succeed on their own merits. Strength is the only currency accepted by The Atom, and only the strong will prosper on N-Day. The Horsemen of the Apocalypse are the greatest faction in N-Day history, that is a simple fact, the highest score ever, the highest faction population ever, the most nukes ever, the most shields ever, the only faction to ever finish at #1 with no radiation, our accolades are limitless, our abilities are peerless. You all know who we are, and you know what we're about. If you wish to free yourself from the shackles placed upon you by bickering cowards and sycophants then seek us out. The ability to choose what is destroyed, when, and in what manner is the exclusive prerogative of the powerful, following the weak will only lead to you being counted among the vanquished.

RP aside, we dominated last N-day, claiming the top 10 faction ranks in the name of the Apocalypse, and we're going to win again this time even if it requires us to actually try a little. If you want to be in the #1 faction then join us, accept no substitutes.

If you want to flex on all the other nerds that play this game join our Discord now and join our faction.

The Count Down: page=news

It's time my friends, The Horsemen of the Apocalypse ride once again.

Hell, Underworld, The Order of the Grey Wardens, Lily, Glass Gallows, Middle Earth, Hippy Haven, St Abbaddon, and bringers of the apocalypse ride again!

For those who haven't ridden with us before and for those of us in need of a refresher please read over the NS News dispatch here; page=dispatch/id=874170

Simple Version.
1. Join faction to start building production
2. Spend Production on missiles or shields
3. Use missile to strike foes for points, use shields to stop incoming missiles
4. Read ^ dispatch, V read the Plan.
5. Be on the Discord! >>> LinkHERE! <<<

The Plan
We show no mercy. Join us and you will be free to attack whomever you wish, we have only targets and make no non-aggression pacts.

Join us on the discord for organization hits, or pick your own targets on your own.

Stick to your specialty, if you're military build nukes, if you're strategic build shields. If you're economic do whatever you please. Whatever your specialization be ready to fight at the start, who knows how many losers from last year will try and fail to get revenge on us early.

Hail to the Riders of the Apocalypse, for we are the leaders of the Horsemen, follow us into oblivion and glory.

Like last time we work from the shadows again. We don't start fights or hit randomly, we won't draw blood, we will slaughter them all at once. We will focus on small or inactive groups. We will avoid taking strikes and create truces.

Best way to avoid becoming a repeated target will be to keep our defense strong, if they can't land a strike on us, and we don't attack them, they will move on. While we'll focus on earning points.

I wanna encourage folks to have a 40% offense, 60% defense slant on production. Particularly at the start of the game and while people are more active. At the start we will see a lot of attacks coming in from everywhere, so have your defenses ready. Remember it is better to stop the first attack to discourage future attacks, strikes only get easier later on.

All of this will be organized through our discord.

Altmoras is the Lord of War, leader of the Horsemen, follow his orders.

FAQ
How many nations to use?

Short answer, as many as you can manage, and in relationship to the time you plan to put in.

Everyone should use at least one nation, if you plan to put in the time and effort use a few more. Remember you build resource/"production" only when the nation is in the Faction. Allowing you to buy shields and missiles, more nations means more you can build up, have one nation just for defense, one for missiles, etc.

However more nations also means more targets for our foes to target! So you gotta pull the weight of the nations you use. Lots of inactive targets is bad, what we want is the right amount of active folks making best use of the max production they can handle.

Does this affect my nations stats??

No! There are no long term repercussions.

History of the Horsemen
N-Day I: We made it into 30th for top strike, our offense was on point. However we didn't have nearly enough defense, we also attacked indiscriminately, started fights, and got mass attacked by everyone in return.
Member Regions: Hell, Underworld, Glass Gallows, Middle Earth, Hippy Haven, and bringers of the apocalypse.

N-Day II: We made it into 12th place with 12,606 strikes, and only taking 5,827 hits.
Member Regions: Hell, Underworld, Glass Gallows, Middle Earth, Hippy Haven, and bringers of the apocalypse.

N-Day III: We rocked the house taking 2nd place thanks to the tireless work of Altmoras, with 67,539 strikes, and only taking a mere 39 hits.
Member Regions: Hell, Underworld, Glass Gallows, Middle Earth, Hippy Haven, Citadel of Ricks, and bringers of the apocalypse.

N-Day IV: We won. We came in 1st. 332,564 strikes and not a single hit landed on us. We are the Kings of the Apocalypse!! Great work to all involved, special thanks to organizer and leader of the Horsemen Altmoras!
Member Regions: Hell, Underworld, Glass Gallows, Middle Earth, Hippy Haven, Citadel of Ricks, The Order of the Grey Wardens, Lily, St Abbaddon, and bringers of the apocalypse.

N-Day V: We took on all of NationStates. For the first 13 glorious hours of N day we rage war on all of NS. No alliances and no mercy was shown, pure slaughter and destruction followed. Eventually in the 13th hour, all of NS united against the Horsemen and finally overwhelmed us nuking us into oblivion. Ending with a score of -643,469. The remaining faction fed on our faction's corpse.
Member Regions: Hell, Underworld, Glass Gallows, Middle Earth, Hippy Haven, The Order of the Grey Wardens, Lily, St Abbaddon, and bringers of the apocalypse.

N-Day VI: We joined with the Crabs and became Crabs of the Apocalypse! Two of the most powerful factions joined as one left no chance for anyone else. First 12hours Crabs of the Apocalypse had a non-aggression pact with The Potato Alliance, and the two removed weaker factions of the board. Upon ending the non-aggression pact, TPA was destroyed, and the rest of NS shortly followed. Crabs of the Apocalypse dominated so completely all ten of top faction spots were claimed in the Crabs of the Apocalypse. Final score was an absurd 1,287,974.
Member Regions: Hell, Underworld, The West Pacific, The Pacific, Balder, United Kingdom, The Great North, The Communist Bloc, Europeia, The Leftist Assembly, The Land of Kings and Emperors, The Internationale, The Social Liberal Union, The Sasquatch Republic, Glass Gallows, Middle Earth, Hippy Haven, The Order of the Grey Wardens, Lily, St Abbaddon, and bringers of the apocalypse.
N-Day 6 News Report

N-Day VII: Horsemen of the Apocalypse returned in classic form. Naturally claiming first once more with score of 444,575.
Member Regions: Hell, Underworld, Middle Earth, Hippy Haven, The Order of the Grey Wardens, Lily, Blackstar, St Abbaddon, and bringers of the apocalypse.
N-Day 7 News Report

N-Day VIII: Horsemen of the Apocalypse once again claim the crown. Scoring a record breaking 1,652,905 score. Making the 4th N-day we’ve won, more than any other faction. First several hours the major factions built up farming smaller faction, until Potato Alliance and Cosmic Corsairs attacked Anime Nations Against Liberals (ANAL). Once the dust settled, Horsemen came in and cleaned house on Potato Alliance. ANAL and Cosmic Corsairs would continue to fist fight throughout the event. Over the course of the event the Horsemen would rain hellfire upon the remaining factions, claiming the top three positions, and largely only factions that had their nations leave the faction after scoring would remain positive.
Member Regions: Hell, Underworld, Middle Earth, Hippy Haven, The Order of the Grey Wardens, Lily, St Abbaddon, Atlantis, and bringers of the apocalypse.
N-Day 8 News Report

N-Day IX: Similar to N-day 5, we took on all of NationStates, only to eventually be overrun and destroyed. After the Horsemen were knocked out, did the other factions kill each other to declare themselves the new kings of the apocalypse? No, they kept the peace that the death of the Horsemen brought, it will go down as one of the most peaceful N-days on record. With Kingly Heathens Asserting Neighborliness claiming king victor.
Member Regions: Hell, Underworld, Middle Earth, Hippy Haven, The Order of the Grey Wardens, Lily, St Abbaddon, Atlantis, Lazarus, and bringers of the apocalypse.
N-Day 9 News Report

N-Day X: Horsemen join up with Khan to become Kingly Horsemen Asserting Neighborliness!!
Member regions:: Hell (& Company), Augustin Alliance, FOCUS, Lone Wolves United, United Regions Alliance, The Pacific, The West Pacific, and bringers of the apocalypse.

And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts
And I looked and behold, a pale horse
And his name that sat on him was Death
And Hell followed with him.

HumanSanity of MSPP entered the race for Delegate, with strong support from the previous month's Linkstraw poll. Hakketomat also ran a playful campaign in the democratic spirit. Despite accusations of vehicular manslaughter, HS pulled through with an easy victory. Congratulations!

Incumbent Controlitia defeated Kohnhead and Solarampa to stay on as Senator for New Republica South.

N-Day

This year's N-Day prompted great excitement within 10000 Islands. As the date grew nearer Islanders were eager to discuss N-Day in the RMB and every nation prepared for the nuclear apocalypse. XKI joined the Potato Alliance alongside many other spud-loving allies, with HumanSanity and Haivon serving as Potato Generals to lead XKI's operations.

Although the Potato Alliance had a rough start to N-Day, some expert strategy and the willingness of every member to grind away at the production of shields and nukes allowed for a quick recovery. Potato Alliance regained a positive score at about +12:56. From there, the faction climbed the ranks from last place up all the way to 2nd place, ending N-day with an astounding score of 284,847 and a grand total of 346,472 strikes!

Around the Islands

~September's LinkFeatured Nation was Yuwa. Consistent and undoubtedly reliable, Yuwa's dedicated work as a recruiter, TITO member, and emissary makes them more than worthy of the honor. Keep up the good work!
~Following the success of XKI's first TacoVision, Hakketomat quickly decided to host a Linkround two. TacoVision II was even more popular, with 32 song submissions, an extended listening party, and a nail-biting live vote count! Congratulations to Ananke II for winning with the excellent song choice of Link Est-ce que tu m'aimes?
~A LinkShort Story Contest hosted by Taco-Island-Charities asked Islanders to write a story about someone who "has been completely color blind for their entire life, seeing only grayscale, until they come across a stranger who appears in color." The contest concluded this month, with Jabberwocky taking the cake with his charming tale.
~Towards the end of the month, XKI was swept up in an Among Us craze, with Islanders gathering together every day to kill, sabotage, and accuse one another. Accidental self-reports, stab-happy imposter teams, and the clearly-audible sounds of murder coming from unmuted mikes led to a great deal of laughter and made everyone just a little sus.
~XKI joined the partea in the Tea House of Cards, where Islanders discussed trading cards and participated in fun events with friends from other region. Special congratulations to Eastern New England, for winning 1st place in the Quantitea and Regional categories of the Card Collecting Competition alongside Reimstagrad, and to Anisopterra for winning the I'm an Arteast section of Cute Animal Competition with their adorable Linkdrawing.

XKI Game-Side

A regional poll by THX1138 asked Islanders to pick their favorite kind of pole. XKI is evidently a fan of penguins as the South Poll became the clear winner!

The RMB picked up again in September with these wonderful revelations:

~Don't go clubbing with Krystalveil
~Fighting words
~NS is sus
~Make a wish!
~Give yourself a round of applause
~GK's #1 Fan
~Jaws 4: Coming to a Daycare Near You

Meet A Nation Interview

HumanSanity has served in many government offices during his years in XKI, and has now taken on the mantel of Delegate. In this edition, he was gracious enough to give us a look into his plans for the region.

Wisch: First off, congratulations on becoming delegate! It's quite the achievement. What inspired you to run for the position?

HS: Since joining NS, regional government and region building have always been interesting to me. Throughout my time in 10000 Islands I've held a variety of government positions. This has always been something, simply put, that I find really fun. As I grow older, I especially love seeing my work succeed in building a strong community. I decided to run for Delegate for a few reasons.
First, it's sort of what's next for me. In XKI, I've held 2 of the 3 Minister positions (Labor and Immigration) and I am the only person to have been elected to each different Senate seat. But I had never been Delegate before, and I have an appetite right now to continue being a part of leading the region.
Second, I think the example provided by Kuriko was really instructive for me, and she certainly deserves credit for demonstrating to me how to effectively and tactfully advocate for defender values in NationStates. While I have my own approach and direction, Kuriko certainly guided me and helped hone my philosophy of XKI's foreign affairs.
Third, on a purely selfish level, I think this is going to be fun. Ultimately, we play NS because it's fun, and I think I'll enjoy both the gear of being Delegate that is about long-term improvements and projects and the gear where you address each problem and crisis as it arises. I think I'm going to have fun over the next 6 months, even if I'll be a bit exhausted

Wisch: You've certainly been very involved in XKI's government! Was anything different about your delegacy campaign than your previous campaigns for senator?

HS: More than anything it was different because I had planned it for a lot longer. I decided I was going to run for Delegate about 6 weeks before declarations open. Just emotionally there was a lot more build up and excitement associated with the election. Running for Delegate is a big decision: it's a 6 month term (not 4 months), it requires you to lock your WA nation from defending activity, and it requires you to serve as an informal figure head/head of state for the region (especially on site) in addition to performing specific job tasks.
Otherwise, it was pretty similar. Of course, I've never been accused of vehicular manslaughter before, but eh, that's not too big a deal.

Wisch: I'm sure getting elected gave you quite the sense of catharsis then. Now, let's look to the future. Could you detail some of your domestic goals as delegate? What's to come for XKI?

HS: My most important domestic goal as Delegate is to embody the spirit of 10000 Islands.
Whenever new nations arrive, they look to the Delegate as the nation's highest elected official. While the Delegate is not the highest member of our government, they are listed first on the main nation page, so they're someone who new nations look up to. It's important that the Delegate leads by example, providing a welcoming and positive presence on the main site, on the forum, and on Discord. Over time, I've gotten to see a lot of different Delegates, and I think this inviting atmosphere and community engagement was the hallmark of Ananke's two very highly regarded terms as Delegate.
Another purely domestic priority for the upcoming term is a bit of work with TIBOE. Vivolkha has done a fantastic job taking an informal leadership role in TIBOE, regularly and aggressively advocating for Delegate endorsements. I want to work with TIBOE and the WA Secretariat to connect TIBOE to the World Assembly Supremacy Program and our broader goals of using cross-endorsement to increase activity.

Wisch: And what can our friends in other regions expect from Delegate HS?

HS: My platform was entirely driven by a belief that expanded cultural and social ties will give us more tools to advocate for defender values on the world stage. Part of this is increasing the depth of our ties with other defender regions and part of this is working more with independent and unaligned regions.
To accomplish this, I am going assist several others in hosting a defender cultural summit shortly. Additionally, I am going to bring back the practice of weekend visits, but instead of attempting to run them every weekend, I'm going to pick and choose and invest more energy into planning each one so they can be more successful.
Lastly, and most importantly, I want my term to serve as an opportunity to clarify and promote a message of compassionate defender internationalism. For far too long "moralism" has been framed as a bad thing in favor of infinite relativism and competitive games playing. While the best defenders, both politically and on the battlefield, are tactical and clever, we cannot abandon our core values which are essential for recruiting, retention, and clarity of purpose.

Wisch: Of course, as delegate, you're going to be heavily involved in WA affairs. How are you planning on handling this new responsibility, especially in regards to upholding XKI's values?

HS: Ultimately, barring exceptional discussions or last minute changes in circumstance (as occurred in my recent decision to override the Liberate Syria vote), I will vote according to forum polls.
Of course, I will exercise clear community leadership on SC discussions. It is important to me that XKI supports Commendations for hard-working defenders and defender regions who have a record of extensive service to the cause. It is also important that XKI supports Commendations for those who have dedicated themselves to building neutral, independent, or gameplay unaligned communities as well - RPers, issue writers and answerers, cards players, and region builders who have also done the quintessentially defender work of building a more inclusive and active game.
Additionally, I want to see a serious pushback against the trend of both Commending and Condemning raiders. Both of these badges for raiders and raider regions become recruiting and propaganda tools. In a strategic sense, defenders should be denying raiders these tools for advancing their agenda. This is obviously an intense politicization of the SC, but the SC is already intensely political.
Most importantly, liberations are the last line of defense we have when things have gone wrong on an operation and native sovereignty is on the line. In do or disappear situations for longstanding native communities, I will be fierce in my advocacy for SC liberations for founderless regions being griefed.

Wisch: Thank you so much for your time. Before we conclude the interview, do you have any final thoughts or comments you'd like to share?

HS: I'm really excited to be Delegate and I'm looking forward to it :)

Until next month, your XKI Update Staff is signing off – Wischland
