The Yakut Republic, of simply Yakutia (Russian: Республика Якутия, romanized: Respublika Yakutiya, Yakut: Саха Өрөспүүбүлүкэтэ, romanized: Saqa Öröspüübülükete), is a sovereign state in Siberia which is the successor state to the Yakut ASSR and the Russian Republic of Sakha. It has a total land area of 3,083,500 km2, making it the second largest state in Siberia, but has a small population of only less than 1 million. It borders Novosibirisk to the west and Transbaikal to the south. Its capital and largest city in Yakutsk, which is the coldest major city in the world. The Yakut ASSR was one of the autonomous republics within the RSFSR. As the situation continued to worsen in 1992, the local government of the Yakut ASSR led by Mikhail Nikolayev proclaimed the independence of Yakutia from the Russian government. The new Yakut government then made an agreement with the Soviet army stationed in Yakutia to secure its sovereignty, which then became the foundations of Yakut Army. Starting from 1995, Yakutia started to assimilate the Russians and other Slavic ethnic groups within Yakutia into Yakut culture. It controls only the southern and more populated area of Yakutia (around a third of the entirety of Yakutia), with the rest still in a state of complete anarchy.

Yakutia is a under a paternalistic regime in which there is a strong executive government led by the president, but has limited democratic processes in the form of the State Assembly, which is the unicameral legislature of Yakutia. Its economy mostly relies on its mining sector, with diamonds, oil, and coal being the largest exports. Its economy boomed in 1996 as the result of the country’s rich natural resources and quick industrialization. It has lukewarm relations with Transbaikal, which it often trades with for agricultural and other products, but has cold relations with Novosibirisk and Cozio due to past incidents. It has very bad relations with the Provisional Government of Russia, who it treats as a threat to Yakut sovereignty. Yakutia is one of the most nationalist nations within Siberia.

History

Even after the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, the situation within the Yakut ASSR only continued to worsen. The entire Russian economy was in shambles, and the Yakuts were particularly hit as resources are redistributed to prioritize the western half of Russia. It was then that the recently-appointed First Secretary of the Yakut Communist Party, Mikhail Nikolayev, seized the opportunity to bring independence to the Yakut people and proclaimed the formation of the Yakut Republic. The Yakut people rallied under the newly proclaimed Yakut Republic and fought against the Soviet army. While the Yakuts were unsuccessful at first, many of the Soviet soldiers defected into their side, which were reorganized into the Yakut Army. In December 1992, the malnourished and underequipped Soviets troops surrendered to the Yakuts, ending the Yakut Independence War. The end of the Yakutia Independence War is usually celebrated with a military parade.

Immediately after the republic has stabilized itself, the Yakut Army was tasked in securing the northern parts of Yakutia, which was at that time still in complete anarchy. The task was officially finished in 1994 when the Yakuts successfully brought back order into the Srednekolymsk region. In 1996, the Yakut economy boomed, which is most likely the result of the quick industrialization and the opening of new mines to extract the nation’s natural resources. In the following years, however, the Yakuts became more and more threatened by its neighbors, or more specifically Novosibirsk. In 1997, Novosibirsk’ borders extended into the Yakut border, and Transbaikal was formed. This led Yakutia to increase military spending to account for the increased border length and prepare for a possible invasion of Yakutia, including modernization of small arms and aircraft and the installment of anti-missile defenses to defend against Novosibirisk’s large arsenal of missiles.

In 2001, Yakut soldiers unknowingly trespassed Novosibirsk borders, which soon escalated into a full-scale invasion of Yakutia by the Siberians. Though the Siberians easily pushed through within the early stages of the conflict, fierce Yakut resistance and extremely poor supply forced the Siberians to withdraw to their original border, with both sides signing a peace treaty shortly afterwards. Although nothing of significance happened within the conflict, this conflict was the first time the Yakut military saw action ever since the Yakut Independence War of 1993, and the conflict provided valuable experience for the Yakut soldiers. In 2020, 2 Yakut Mig-19 Fighter Jets accidentally flew into Cozioan aerospace. The fighter jets were intercepted and promptly shot down by Cozio fighter jets, which led to a 5-month long conflict between Yakutia and Cozio. Due to the massive difference in the two nations” militaries, the conflict ended in a quick and decisive Cozio victory. In the next two years, Yakutia continued to modernize its armed forces to modern standards. In 2022, Yakutia expressed its concern for the establishment of Kamchatka by Cozio forces, seeing it as a potential threat.

Politics

Yakutia is led by the Yakut Socialist Party, a left-wing political party consisting of the various centrist socialists and less extremist members of the former Yakut Communist Party, under President Aytal Kudarakhov. The executive sector, consisting of the prime minister, president, and cabinet is by far the most influential within the government. The Yakut Government has an unicameral legislature known as the State Assembly.

When Mikhail Nikolayev proclaimed Yakutia’s independence in 1992, all of the Yakut people rallied under him to fight for their independence from the foreigners, granting him the title of the Father of the Yakuts. The people of Yakutia are determined and and will do everything that is necessary to keep his dream of a independent Yakutia alive. When another foreign power comes knocking at the door once more, the Yakuts will be prepared to defend their homeland no matter the cost. Caxa Tinnach!

Rebirth of Yakut Culture

• Political Power: +0.20

Ever since the Russian occupation of Yakutia, Yakut culture has been in a constant state of decline, with the majority of Yakuts being assimilated to the Russians. With the rise of a new independent Yakutia, the nationalist government has attempted to reintroduce Yakut culture, language, and religion back to its populace in order to reinstate the Yakut national identity and restore it to its original condition. It is due to their brilliant efforts that the Yakut people can finally realize their common identity and stand united as a nation today.

Military

The armed forces of Yakutia are known as the Armed Forces of the Yakut Republic, which was unofficially founded immediately after the proclamation of Independence. It is subordinated to the Yakut Ministry of Defense. Its structure and equipment was largely inherited from the Soviet Armed Forces Transbaikal Military District. Despite efforts in modernization, the backbone of the Yakut armed forces equipment mostly consists of Soviet-era equipment, most notably T-55s, T-62s, Mig-19, and Mig-21, which are fielded in large numbers. The Armed Forces of the Yakut Republic has around 8,000 active personnel and 4,000 reserve personnel. It controls multiple bunker complexes spread evenly throughout the nation. Ever since its formation, it has been part of two conflicts: the Cozio-Yakut Aerospace War and the 2022 Cozio-Yakut War, the latter of which is still ongoing. Yakutia spends 9% of its total government spending on defense.
