Isn't UBI basically a negative income tax?

Ioudaia wrote:I would have expected something like that for UBI, if large enough, but not negative income tax. Gotta link or citation handy?

Negative income tax is pretty much just UBI but it only qualifies if you make below a certain threshold. It's still free money that comes in that predatory capitalism will eat because it's there. It's already expensive being poor and having more money obtained in this way means the poor will just be taken advantage of more

Good afternoon. It is I, Parthagonia, here to say that I am new to Nationstates and this wonderful region of the Western Isles. I was looking for a lovely roleplay place to call home and you guys fit the bill. So alas, here I am. the welcome message asked me to answer these following questions:

--

Q- How did you hear about The Western Isles?

A- Was looking through all the potential homes, this place and another called Enadia were the final two. I chose this one over the other mainly due to you guys seemed a lot more into the roleplay and a bit better at it. you all seemed experienced and more adept at it. Also, I could actually see your roleplay threads and map, Unlike Enadia.

--

Q- What's some information about yourself (hobbies, interests, country, etc.)?

A- Umm, I live in the USA, but I have mostly Western European blood in me and most of my family come from there. I am only the 3rd generation to be born and raised in the states, my grandfather was the first. I am mostly French, with some Northern Alps Italian and Swiss in me. the French immigrants that were my ancestors came to the new world during the 7 years war to help the French colonists in the Quebecois region, where he fell in love with a native american women. centuries down the line here I am. throw in Italian merchants crossing the Alps and loving French girls as well as Swiss mercenaries also falling in love with French women, and my bloodline is born. So French, Northern Italian, Swiss and Quebecois Native American.
Hobbies would most likely be my fondness for the outdoors and walks in the wilderness, gaming, reading and writing, history politics and philosophy. the latter 3 I am very much a novice at. I could and would love to have hours long conversations with you all regarding history and your opinions and points of view on them.

--

Q-What kind of nation are you trying to make?

A- Most Likely an old fashioned constitutional Monarchy, much like the ones you might of seen before and during the 1st world war, with some personal twists of course. A benevolent and well loved monarch would some power as a meritocratic and semi voted on parliament would do most of the work. past that and on the smaller more local scale I would include a more direct style of democracy. in your own towns and on a one to one scale, you control your own towns government because you are your towns government. however you still answer to the chambers of Parliament, you take advisement and some answers from the King or Queen themselves. I'm hoping to successfully mix the cultures of differing nations, mostly alps Italian, Swiss, French and perhaps Portuguese. I would love an old storied nation filled with history and culture, but could also hold its own at the diplomacy, economic and military tables. however I don't want a sprawling superpower. A Chinese; American; Russian power nation is undesirable. An elegant, peaceful nation is however, desirable. A coastal or island nation would be preferred, where most of the armed forces pay would go to the Naval forces, with the air force coming next. An export and industrial nation is also preferred.

Hopefully, I can fit in well here!

Welcome to The Western Isles! Based on the research you seem to have done, you're probably already familiar with the dispatch below. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

I did not see that, I just looked at some of your links to the forums in the box in top of the page and your map. thanks for the link! I question I do have is that there any lingo or things you guys say that a newbie like me wouldn't know? For example if you said dispatch without posting the link I wouldn't know what you were talking about.

There probably are some abbreviations like RMB (Regional Message Board, where we are now), TG (telegram, the thing you just sent me), WA (World Assembly, which we generally ignore here but every once in a while the RMB is flooded with our complaints about the TG's that the WA sends us). For most people here certain things have become so common that they don't know anymore that newbies couldn't know yet. If you encounter anything like this, just ask; no questions are stupid. I have been here for almost 1.5 years now and I still won't claim that I know everything.

No worries; there are younger participants here and most are probably around your age. I myself am 42 but I think I am one of the few older than 35/40 here.

Sounds like we should establish more protections for poor people

Your GDPPC is way too high. There's a cap limit of $30.000

Seneica wrote:Your GDPPC is way too high. There's a cap limit of $30.000

Alright, I will immediately get to work on that. thank you for letting me know.

Your GDPPC cannot be larger than 40,000 and to go beyond 30,000 (Which is the soft cap) I would enjoy seeing good reasons from an economic perspective and how it will affect your RP. But yeah, having a factbook should be good enough from Van's perspective I imagine, be sure to TG him. Welcome to the region. I am your friendly Secretary of RP, Aizcona.

Thanks! That picture is from before the lockdown of course, but tomorrow I will meet the local Dresser of Hayrs to put me back in order.

I got this one holmes, soft cap of 30,000 btw. Hard of 40,000 and you'll need reasons both from an economic perspective and RP perspective for me to sign off.

How is the factbook now? I will update the mirrored dispatch if you two give the OK.

I mean there's nothing wrong with it. I mean what are you hoping for out of RP here? That's kinda gonna determine what you want to do with your nation size and what not, but honestly that's kind of a handwavy issue.

Might want to think about what kind of economy your nation will have and look at nations that might be similar to what you're looking for. Are there any industries you want to be key players? Is your economy still heavily reliant on agriculture? Has it transitioned well into tertiary sectors or is manufacturing the dominant component of the GDP? Stuff like that, also helps to look at the factbooks of other nations around here.

If you have questions feel free to ask :)

I'm looking for a home grown economy with tons of exports and a large industry sector, not unlike Germany's. Of course I cannot be as large as theirs. I just want to see people have my nations products, and know that they are made with pride and high quality.

Despite being a monarchist, I somehow never got around to the jewel thing or any other external expression of wealth. Basically I may be a monarchist in marxist disguise.. 🤔
