Hobbies are never a waste of time. And if you want to make your work out of astronomy, I guess that's not useless either because it looks like this earth is reaching its expiration date so we need someone to find a new one :)

Had a telescope as a kid, but lived in Mexico City, literally never saw anything other than maybe the moon if the weather was good.

That is pretty sad actually.

But typical for a lot of people. Since increasingly many people live in big cities, they'll never see anything but the moon, a couple of planets, and first magnitude stars.

I can also see a grocery store two minutes walk from my apartment

Thanks man, that means a lot!

I'm living in Eastern part of Poland so even living in suburbs next to the not the smallest city in this area (Rzeszów) I can still see a lot of stars if it's not a cloudy night.

Same here, at least under ideal conditions. But I don't get ideal conditions very often. :(

Most stars I have ever seen was when visiting family in Spain, we have a little holiday home in the Pyrenees a couple hours away from the next "big" city.
Winter, there is gorgeous, the peaks are covered in snow, pines, and cliffs cover the horizon, and the only sound is cowbells.

Spain is a gorgeous place to live. I would love to move there. And people are just so nice and calm. They don't ever look stressed or something like that.

I am planning on moving there within the next couple of years, although Poland doesn't sound half bad either. It is easier for me due to the fact that I have a Spanish passport, but still expensive.

Well I don't want to sound like those guys that say "Europe is the best place, all other places are crap" but I personally just like the diversity all around such a small continent.

Of course, I haven't been able to visit too much of Europe. Only the countries with family members for the most part. But I do have a much more intense interest for European cultures than for example, South American. I just find it much more interesting. Just wish getting a gun was easier and there was less non-citizen migration, then I'd be set forever.

In any case, I do intend to "return", my branch of family only exists in Mexico due to unfortunate circumstances.

I'm going to leave America for the first time in my life next summer

I've never had a telescope myself. But I live out in the countryside. so it's a pretty nice place for stargazing. I like to sit on the terrace and smoke my pipe while looking up at the sky sometimes.

Northern Scandinavian Islands wrote:Just wish getting a gun was easier

On Spain, for anyone curious. I'm planning to get a D type license (big game hunting, rifles, semi-automatic shotguns) and an F type (sporting, which in this case it's specifically .22 semi-automatics and pretty much all semi-automatic handguns) Goal is to get a SIG MCX in .300BLK, and a Glock 19. Although I saw a very nice Izhmash Tiger (export SVD) for sale earlier that got me really tempted. In any case, the right to self-defense should be a human right.

Yes, but can't you just do karate or something? Guns are so... rude
