CANADA TAKES THE GREAT LEAP: EMBRACING THE METRIC SYSTEM
    JANUARY 1970

Montréal, Capital Territory, Canada— In a historic move that is set to change the day to day lives of many Canadians, the Liberal government announced its decision to adopt the metric system. This momentous shift marks the end of the Canadian Unit measurement system (Imperial system) that has been in use for centuries, and will usher in a new era of standardized weights and measures for the Dominion. The decision is aimed at modernizing Canada and aligning it with international standards, fostering global trade, and improving scientific and technological cooperation.

The announcement was made by Hon. Louis Legault, the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Commerce, who described the move as a "bold step towards progress." He emphasized that this change would streamline Canada's business practices and enhance Canadas ability to contribute to scientific research and engineering, ultimately benefiting all Canadians.

The transition to the metric system will be gradual, and the government has laid out a comprehensive plan to ensure a smooth adjustment for the public, businesses, and industries. The implementation of the metric system will affect various aspects of daily life, including distance, weight, volume, temperature, and more. However, officials assured that extensive educational campaigns and training programs will be launched to help citizens adapt to the new system seamlessly.

The primary reason for the switch is to align Canada with the majority of industrialized nations that have already adopted the metric system, or have begun to adopt the metric system. By using standardized measurements, Canadian products will be more easily marketable abroad, facilitating international trade and commerce. This move is seen as essential in an increasingly interconnected global economy.

The decision to change to the metric system was not without its critics. Some individuals and industries expressed concerns about the cost of transitioning, citing the need to recalibrate equipment and retrain workers. Farmers, for example, will need to adjust to new weight and volume measurements for agricultural products.

However, proponents of the change, notably the Liberal government, believe that the long-term benefits far outweigh the initial challenges. They argue that embracing the metric system will ultimately lead to greater efficiency and accuracy, making Canada more competitive on the global stage.

To help citizens during this transition, the federal government, with support from the provincial governments, will work to ensure that roadway signs, gas pumps, and anything that may have an impact on the daily lives of citizens will be labeled in both imperial and metric units to ensure a smooth transition. Educational institutions will also play a vital role in educating the younger generation with the metric system, ensuring that future Canadians are well-versed in this modern measurement system from an early age.

As the world moves towards standardization and cooperation, Canada's decision to embrace the metric system marks a significant change in direction. The nation sets an example for others, demonstrating its commitment to progress, innovation, and international harmony. With the government's plan in place, Canadians can now look forward to a future measured using the metric system, as the nation stands tall on the world stage.

UNION BANK OF THE ALPS (UBA) CELEBRATES OPENING OF NEW YORK OFFICE

The first employees of the New York branch of the Union Bank of the Alps (UBA) walked through the doors of 299 Park Avenue, Manhattan in a major move for the company. The move represents the first major breakthrough of UBA in the ever-expanding US markets, with the company purchasing a 49.5% stake in the building following agreements with the majority owners, the Fisher Brothers. The new office floors will be accepting a maximum of 500 new staff, many of them Americans, into the new investment branch of the company. The move heralds new business opportunities for the company and provided it is successful, may impact further business relations between the United States and the Alpine Confederation.

The rise of UBA as the premier bank in the Alps is not unprecedented. Since 1962, UBA has rapidly grown within Europe through acquisitions of both financial and industrial holdings, with investments in West Germany proving especially fruitful. Through the acquisition of Interhandel, a large conglomerate and their American subisidiary, General Aniline & Film (GAF) Corporation, UBA had already established a minor presence in the US through joint ownership of the firm with the US government in 1963. UBA's international expansion began with the opening of the London office in 1967, the first of its kind. Therefore, it seems that US expansion was just a short while away for the growing bank.

The banking sector is growing to be the key driving force behind the Alpine economy, with more and more students graduating from university with degrees in economics and finance. There are concerns that the popularity of these financial jobs may take away from other sectors of the economy, where the more traditional agriculture and industrial sectors are seeing a gradual decline. However, it is believed that a service based economy may be the key to increasing economic output over the years, where the Confederation can no longer compete with the larger superpowers in the world such as the United States, the Soviet Union and even the People's Republic of China, in agriculture or industry.

TOP SECRET

Daily Brief - Domestic Situations

CONCERNING THE NCP

At the request of the Department of Justice and the direction of the President, the FBI has continued surveillance operations on the National Constitutional Party (NCP). Currently, surveillance operations including infiltration of party organisms and gatherings, wiretaps, and surveillance of top party figures have yielded valuable information on party connections with known extremist organizations including the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), the National Democratic White League (NDWL) and the Black League.

Wiretaps installed by and monitored by the FBI have revealed that top party officials, including Senator Strom Thurmond (C-NC) and former Alabama Governor and Presidential candidate George are aware of the connections between the NCP and these organizations. However, no credible first-hand evidence has been gathered proving that either Thurmond or Wallace explicitly approve of these connections and activities. The FBI has also gathered evidence proving links between members of the central party apparatus and the aforementioned extremist organizations.

CONCERNING LEFTIST ORGANIZATIONS AND OTHER ANTI-GOVERNMENT GROUPS

The Weather Underground Organization (WUO) continues to be a serious threat to U.S national security. Recent activity suggests that they will continue bombing attacks against various targets in an attempt to push their anti-war agenda. Primary targets include government buildings and banks. The nature of the WUO has made it difficult for the FBI to effectively track it across the nation, but several surveillance operations are currently underway in areas of the heaviest activity including in Chicago, Detroit, Denver and Los Angeles.

The Communist Party of the United States (CPUS) under the present leadership of Gus Hall remains a low-level threat based on recent surveillance. Its member roster has declined significantly in the past few years and while the party may have connections to the Soviet Union (USSR), the FBI in collaboration with the CIA have determined that these connections will not have a significant or otherwise detrimental effect on U.S national security.

The FBI has continued surveillance operations against the Black Panther Party and National of Islam (NOI) organizations. Surveillance of these organizations has revealed increased radicalization, particularly from those belonging to the religious NOI. Of concern is the increasing tensions between the Black Panther organization and known White supremacist groups. While "Black Power" groups have collaborated with White supremacists in the past, surveillance has uncovered increased enmity between organizations. This could lead to severe escalation in the future and the FBI has begun to take steps in preparation for this possibility. However, recent reports suggest that this remains a possibility and not a certainty.

ON COINTELPRO PROGRAM

The COINTELPRO program continues to be an effective tool against extremist organizations and other threats to the national security of the United States. FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover has expressed his continued support for the program and urges the President to continue his own endorsement of the program. COINTELPRO has assisted the FBI and other security organizations of the United States to safeguard national security and neutralize threats to the interests of the U.S Government.

Daily Brief - Military Situation

CONCERNING OPERATIONS IN VIETNAM

U.S military operations continue in Vietnam with limited success. The North Vietnamese army continues guerrilla attacks against both South Vietnamese and American forces. As instructed by the President last year, the U.S Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV) has continued the "Vietnamization" program with the assistance of U.S military instructors, private defense contractors and the CIA.

As per request, General William Westmorland has been recalled from his position as head of MACV and subsequently replaced by Frederick C. Weyand who will now have overall command of all U.S forces in Vietnam. General Weyand has expressed full support toward Vietnamization and has expressed hope that American military personnel will be able to begin some withdrawals in late summer 1970.

General Weyand has also outlined a strategy to improve troop morale, including additional troop rotation, more entertainment, and the maintenance of a steady supply of cigarettes and other mood enhancers. The MACV will continue to insist on the American mission in Vietnam which will be to "preserve the independence of the Republic of Vietnam and repel the North Vietnamese communist aggressor." General Weyand believes that continued defensive operations, air support for the South Vietnamese forces and effective Vietnamization will remove some of the toll on morale and reduce combat casualties on the U.S side. Ultimately, General Weyand has predicted that the war will be reduced to a static conflict by winter of 1970 at the earliest and spring of 1971 at the latest.

War, what is it good for?

The War in Vietnam had been a mess from start to finish. Rather than a victory over global Communism, it had become one of the most unpopular wars the United States had ever fought. On the streets, American citizens made use of their right to protest to demand an end to the war. And it was no longer dirty hippies or Communists, not it was students, draft dodgers, the families of the fallen in the jungles and returning soldiers. The ordinary American people wanted this to end. They saw the conflict in Vietnam as fruitless, all of those lives lost for nothing. And perhaps they were right.

Lyndon Johnson leaned into his desk, his forehead resting upon his palm. Below sat a folder bearing the seal of the Department of Defense. It was the daily Vietnam report. He'd read it front to back as he had always done, lingering at times in the casualty reports. Most of the dead were draftees. Young men taken from their ordinary lives, trained and turned into soldiers before being sent into the foreign jungles of a country, far, far from home.

Raised a Christian from birth, Johnson sometimes wondered how God saw him. Whether his fight for civil rights in America was enough to make up for his other sins. For the deaths of young boys in the jungles of Vietnam. Perhaps not. Perhaps, He would ask why Johnson didn't stop this sooner. He could've, the President thought. Ultimately, Johnson settled on simply replying. 'Politics'. That's why American boys were dying in that damnable jungle halfway across the world. Politics.

Make no mistake, however, Johnson was committed to the Domino Theory. If Vietnam fell, well, there was no telling where Communism would spread next. Thailand? Burma? Indonesia? Perhaps even Japan would fall to Communism too. And when the Communists rule the world, what then? Still. Johnson had seen the reports, the numerous suggestions by the likes of Curtis LeMay, William Westmoreland and Creighton Abrams. All three of them said the same thing. Bomb the North Vietnamese into surrendering. Lift the restrictions. Drag what's left of them to the negotiating table. An impossible task if the words of McNamara had any merit. And if Johnson had any say in it, they damned well did.

The President sat up straight on his chair, removing his reading glasses before setting the report aside. It was time to end this catastrophe. Negotiate with the Communists, get Americans out of South Vietnam and focus on what really mattered to the American people. Johnson's Great Society had yet to be realized. The NDWL and the KKK were making moves of their own, defying the Federal Government's mandate for civil rights. This war needed to end, sooner rather than later.

WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE - THE LONG ROAD TO FREEDOM

The Alpine Confederation has laid claim to boasting one of the most free political and social systems in Europe and the World. With a unique blend of a federal government, direct democracy and the overall concept of the Willensnation, the Confederation is one of the most popular places to live in Europe, with some of the best civil and political freedoms integrated into society. However, one thorn in the side of the nation for some time now has been the issue of women's suffrage... and its continued existence as an issue in Alpine society. Political activists in the nation have wondered 'how can the nation be free if half of us cannot vote?'. Although on the surface, this may appear to be a sign of backward thinking nation, there are a number of continuing issues that have prevented women's suffrage from becoming a reality.

Before the Confederation, Switzerland had attempted to grant women the right to vote on numerous occasions. Due to the direct democracy practiced, many of these votes were unsuccessful, as the only voters were men and the Federal Council could not pass law without first holding a referendum. On average since the first attempt in 1924, the votes would usually result in a 60-40 split against granting women the right to vote. Suggestions that the Federal Council should override these votes and grant the right to vote without referendum harkened back to the Sonderbundskrieg, and the fear that interference with the rights and freedoms of the individual Cantons and citizens may cause trouble. Alongside this, Swiss law mandated that the right to vote should only be granted after one had served in the Swiss Armed Forces, a role that was only granted to men.

The Canton of Basel-Stadt granted regional suffrage in 1951, but since then, further attempts have been unsuccessful. However, the political landscape changed with the addition of the Austrian cantons. The former Austrian Republic had women's suffrage since 1917, and thus this was carried on in the formation of the Alpine Confederation. Today, there is a clear split between the Eastern and Western Cantons of the Confederation, with women receiving better rights in the East than in the West. The introduction of the Austrian Cantons have emboldened the idea that a nation-wide vote on Women's Suffrage may indeed be successful, with early polls favouring this. Initiatives are already spawning across the country, the most notable in Vienna, with the Federal Council bound to take notice soon. Could this problem soon disappear from the Alps, or will it remain a black mark against democracy in the Confederation?

Summer, 1970 - Somewhere in rural Mississippi

"God, what sh*thole." Exclaimed Mathias Koehl as he set down a cardboard box filled with all sorts of NDWL paraphernalia on the floor of what was to become the main hall of their Mississippi 'military camp'. "Place looks like it's about to collapse any minute now." He continued to complain as the wind swung the door to the cabin open. "Door don't even work. What the f*ck." Koehl sighed as he approached the door and slammed it shut, hoping that would fix the problem. Place wouldn't even pass for an outpost in the army, much less the Marine Corps.

Apparently catching him having trouble with the door, it was pushed open into the cabin by Koehl's 'friend' and 'colleague' Francis Parker Yockey. Neither of those words really described Koehl's relationship with Yockey. Out of everyone in their organization, he was perhaps the least qualified among them. He was an ideologue, with a vision that didn't conform to reality. He believed in the ideal of a White-led society, but dreamed of things that were beyond anything Koehl could or wanted to understand. He also just couldn't stand him. Period.

"Problems with the door?" Yockey asked with that grin he seemed to wear everywhere he went. Being a lawyer had apparently rubbed off on him too much. Suit he was wearing made him seem like an even bigger as*hole.

"What do you think?" Koehl spat as he pushed the box further into the cabin, until it hit the side of a dusty desk, one of many inside. "Place will likely fall apart before we can get people in here."

Yockey shrugged, making Koehl bite his lip in an attempt to save whatever insult he had prepared lob at him for his indifference. How could a man with political ambitions be so aloof and indifferent to everything around him. Even for the Cause, he almost seemed like he didn't care. His writings said otherwise.
"Where's Rockwell, anyway?" Koehl asked as he found the least dusty chair he could find to sit down. Needed to rest his back after moving so many boxes. Especially when he had to do so practically on his own. Francis wasn't helping, anyway.

"In Jackson. Meeting with you-know-who." The lawyer replied as he stuffed both hands in his pockets and began to pace around the cabin, occasionally glancing at the various boxes which contained things ranging from paraphernalia to firearms. "I've tried to convince him to get you-know-who to lend us more support. Won't bite, though. The FBI is tapping into their meetings, or so 'he' says."

Koehl hummed, figuring that a 'legitimate' party wouldn't want to be associated with an organization like the NDWL or the Klan for that matter. Still, they needed the support of state authorities here in the South. Only way to rally people to the Cause. "We have to do something." Koehl insisted, jumping out of his chair, refusing to be in any vulnerable position around Yockey. He may have been a bastard, but Koehl knew very well that he had aspirations of his own. He aimed for leadership of the NDWL, though it went beyond that. It wasn't too difficult to surmise that Yockey had national aspirations. "If they don't bite, then we'll have to convince them that our people are in danger. That the blacks and the Mexicans are running amok and one of our own is enabling them."

"We have to be patient." Again, Yockey seemed nonchalant. "Let things play out. We act suddenly, FBI will come down on us. If what you-know-who says is true and they are tapping into their meetings, they're likely looking for something to indict them on. Something to execute a search warrant. It's the sort of attention we don't want to give." The lawyer's expertise came through and Koehl, the ex-Marine, reluctantly agreed with him.

"F*ck it. Guess we'll wait. Doubt the people will." Deciding he'd had enough of Francis, Koehl made his way out of the cabin and onto the camp proper. Despite the sorry state of that building, the rest of the camp was looking well. Beyond that cabin lay various tents, occupied by 'soldiers' of the NDWL. Young men and some women willing to lay down their lives if need be for the nation they loved. And, as far as Mathias was concerned, they'd probably have to resort to that option to end the madness the President had set off on America's people.

Snake Eyes

Once, the FBI office in Mobile, Alabama was one of the quieter ones. Since the 1940s, the regional headquarters had seen little activity beyond the occasional organized crime bust. Even during Prohibition, the office saw little activity. After all, Alabama wasn't exactly known for the sort of criminal's the Bureau went after. That, to the chagrin of many of the agents, had drastically changed in the last few years. And more recently, the place had become the hub for Bureau operations in the Deep South. In fact, the office had been expanded and now, over three-hundred agents worked there full-time.

The regional headquarters in Mobile was the nerve center of Operation Snake Eyes, an FBI operation aimed at surveilling and cataloging the activities of White supremacist organizations including the Ku Klux Klan and the National Democratic White League or NDWL. Initiated by J. Edgar Hoover during the early 1960s, the operation had been collecting information on various organizations for nearly a decade. All with the aim of maintaining a close watch on organizations aiming to disrupt the status quo. But, after the Director's death last year, the FBI had refocused its efforts toward building a case for the Department of Justice with the ultimate goal of destroying these organizations for good.

Snake Eyes, however, not only targeted extremist organizations, but Southern politicians as well. National Constitutional Party governors and prominent NCP leaders like George Wallace and Strom Thurmond were under close watch by the FBI. Controversially, at least within the Bureau, agents had bugged Thurmond's Senate office in the Capitol while Wallace's home in Alabama was also fitted with listening devices. Nearly every move made by the two men was monitored and tracked by agents on the field and by aircraft. Similar measures had been taken for Governors in Alabama, South Carolina, Arkansas, and Mississippi.

Lastly, Operation Snake Eyes had also targeted various other actors thought to be operating with extremist organizations in the Deep South and across the United States. Notable White supremacist leaders such as George Lincoln Rockwell, the Chairman of the NDWL and his deputy Francis Parker Yockey were also subject to surveillance by the FBI.

With Hoover gone and more 'liberal' leaders at the helm of the Bureau, 1970 has become the year in which Operation Snake Eyes became a focal point for the eventual destruction of White Supremacist organizations in the United States. Now, in coordination with the Attorney General and with the full endorsement of President Lyndon Johnson, the FBI has gone full steam ahead with operations to not only disrupt these organizations but gather enough evidence to destroy them in the near future.

In the meantime, however, the American public continues to see the KKK and the NDWL operating with impunity, particularly in the South where they have forged alliances with local police departments and even the governor's administration in various states. Meanwhile, states controlled by the National Constitutional Party have done their best to not only disrupt Federal efforts to enforce desegregation and civil rights legislation, but also prevent the Department of Justice from effectively pursuing White supremacist organizations.

Only time will tell if the FBI and the Johnson Administration will achieve the same level of success as Ulysses S. Grant once did against the First Klan or if America is destined to fall under the grip of Christian Nationalism and White supremacy.

FIS ALPINE WORLD SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS GENERATES EXCITEMENT IN THE ALPS

The atmosphere in St. Moritz is one of excitement as it prepares to welcome athletes from across the world in a months time to compete in the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships. The competition marks the third time the Alpine resort has hosted this prestigious event, and many are seeing it as a precursor to the upcoming Winter Olympics being held in Innsbruck in 1976. Alpine skiers from across the nation have been training hard as they hope to bring home Gold in this event. Eyes are focused on several competitors such as Olympic Champion Bernhard Russi, Karl Schranz, Rudi Sailer, Werner Bleiner and Dumeng Giovanoli, with the hopes that they can replicate their successes in previous competitions and bode well for future competitions. Alpine skiing has always been a popular sport in the Alps, and one in which the Alps has always been successful, even before unification. However, there will likely be fierce competition this year, with the United States, France, Canada and West Germany all showing strong in previous competitions. Some notable absences are the Nordic nations of Sweden and Norway, only committing a few competitors to the tournament this year, despite traditionally being dominant forces in the Winter Olympic games.

INTERNAL COMMUNIQUE FROM MARSHAL LIN BIAO TO PREMIER ZHOU ENLAI CONCERNING PROJECT 571

林彪元帥致周恩來總理、鄧小平關於“五七一”工程的內部公報

Comrade Premier,

I cannot in good faith continue to stay silent on matters befalling our great nation. No doubt you have now heard of the passing of Comrade Liu Shaoqi at the hands of the Red Guard, one of the great revolutionaries that brought the People's Republic to life and fought to rid China of imperialist and reactionary ambitions. I shuddered at the thought of his humiliation and imprisonment at the hand of that gang of roving thugs the Party dares to call the 'Red Guard'. A bunch of jumped-up students with little red books in their hands, given the power from Chairman Mao to terrorize our comrades across China.

It has become clear to me now. The Cultural Revolution cannot be allowed to continue. The entire country is in a standstill, nobody works as they're all too busy singing songs of Lenin and Mao in the streets under the fear of persecution. The Party has been purged of its true revolutionaries to make way for this 'Gang of Four', who seem to sit content with the destruction of the revolution before our eyes. Traitors, all of them. Chairman Mao is driving this nation into the ground and throwing away the sacrifice of our revolutionary comrades who gave their lives in the pursuit of this nation. Mao has already defied the Politburo time and time again, and for what? To devastate our nation? To murder our citizens? This cannot be allowed to continue.

The People's Liberation Army stand ready to support any action that must be taken to rid China of these traitors. We must prevent this terror from continuing, else we may all suffer its wrath, and China may never truly recover.

Premier, I implore you to meet with us.

Action must be taken, and it must be taken now.

Report to the President on ongoing ARSMITH operation in China - July 17, 1970
Central Intelligence Agency

To the President,

ARSMITH continues surveillance and data collection in the People's Republic of China as authorized by the Director of National Intelligence and the President. As of the date of this report, our assets and informants remain safe with a low chance of detection by Chinese authorities. However, as noted by ARSMITH in the previous report, China's capable counterintelligence apparatus remains a major obstacle in obtaining reliable sources and collecting information to protect U.S interests.

Recent reports suggest that Mao Zedong remains at the top of the Communist Party structure and in control of the state apparatus. ARSMITH has been able to confirm from primary sources that the so-called "Cultural Revolution" remains in full swing with little to no internal party dissent. The death of Liu Shaoqi, a prominent moderate leader considered by ARSMITH as possibly being aligned with some U.S interests suggests that the PR of China may remain a possible threat to American interests in the Asia-Pacific in the long-term.

This summer, ARSMITH was able to confirm second hand reports of unusual movements by the People's Liberation Army, the PRC's military. These movements do not correspond to known PLA deployments in Mainland China and ARSMITH has not been able to corroborate whether these unusual movements are of significance. Langley analysts have theorized that the movements may suggest the beginning stages of a coup d'etat, however it is unknown as of this time who the target is or if a coup is truly underway.

ARSMITH will continue its normal operations, but has the available resources to divert additional attention to the PLA. The Director of National Intelligence has greenlit the divergence of resources for this task with pending confirmation from the President.

GOULART’S 5 YEAR PLAN ANNOUNCED

O CAPITÓLIO, BRASÍLIA, REPÚBLICA FEDERAL DO BRASIL

| 1970, the turn of the decade. A year since the passage of the Constitution of 1969. A failed putsch in 1964 saw President João Goulart and the Getulhist Brazilian Labor Party began to consolidate their power. The status quo of the 1930 Revolution was cemented as the country’s Public Forces decimated the ranks of the Armed Forces and purged Old Constitutionalists, conservative reactionaries, as well as many Paulistas and Cariocas. A state of emergency was declared in 1964, and all political parties sans the PTB (Brazilian Labor Party) were subsequently banned. A constitutional assembly was called in 1965 which drafted a revised version of the 1937 Estado Novo Constitution. Passed in July 1969, it marked a transition to the Fifth Brazilian Republic or Estado Novo 2 / Estado Novo Dois.

In 1970, Brazil embarks on a transformative endevour and the announces a the first 5-year plan. Guided by the ideals of Getulio Vargas: rationalism, corporatism, and nationalism. The Fifth Republic named Getulio Vargas as the primary ideological father of the new Brazil. It self-identified as third positionist, an embraced a corporate, secular, vanguardist model of governance.

Guided by the Brazilian Labor Party, Brazil seeks to harness its abundant resources and low-wage high-skill labor force, to create a path towards industrial growth, elevated living standards, and a new positive nation identity.

At the heart of the plan were state-run enterprises, instrumental in driving Brazil's economic development. Notable names like "National Steelworks" and "Petrobras - The National Energy Company" are founded, aiming to secure Brazil's self-sufficiency and reducing dependence on imports. "National Steelworks" will leverage the country's vast iron ore deposits to establish a robust steel industry, fostering domestic production and job opportunities. "Petrobras" accelerates exploration and production, aims to become a symbol of Brazil's energy independence and secure reliable fuel supplies for the nation.

Education reform becomes a top priority, with the government revamping the curriculum to prioritize science, mathematics, and technical skills. Vocational schools will be constructed nationwide, nurturing a skilled workforce equipped to propel the industrial surge. The plan also emphasizes adult education programs, empowering workers with union training to fostering a sense of national pride through learning.

Infrastructure development is a cornerstone of Brazil's economic agenda. The government launched the "National Roads Initiative" to modernize the road network, enhancing connectivity between cities and promoting trade and economic growth. Brazil will model this initiative on the German autobahn, particularly regarding speed regulation. Additionally, the "Railway Modernization Project" aims to revitalise the railway system, bolstering efficient transportation of goods and raw materials.

Deeply rooted in Brazilian culture, the plan celebrates national identity and encourages unity among Brazilians. Cultural centers and museums will receive funding, in a bid to preserve the nation's rich heritage and nurture a sense of shared history. An idea borrowed from the Turkish and Mexican states. The government will sponsor cultural events, showcasing Brazil's artistic and musical talent, fostering national pride, and to promote social cohesion.

The plan placed a strong emphasis on national champions as engines of economic growth. The government will provide financial support and technical assistance, propelling these major national enterprises into key sectors: automobile manufacturing, textiles, petrochemicals, agriculture and agrochemicals. By fostering local entrepreneurship and cooperative ventures, inconjunction with export subsidies and state-directed investments into R&D and labor productivity, Brazil seeks to a create a flourishing entrepreneurial spirit that bolsters both national and regional dconomic development.

Brazil's 5-year plan promises to reshape the nation's destiny. the Estado Novo’s economic policy is in technocracy, dirigisme, and top-down goverment. Collaborative endeavors between state and private enterprises will become common place, allowing the country to pursue a long term agenda. The country was targeting an escape from poverty, so let the die be cast. |

SATELLITE DONGFANGHONG 1 (PRC 1) AND ROCKET CHANGZHENG-1 DEPART FOR JIUQUAN LAUNCH SITE

東方紅一號運載火箭長征一號出發前往酒泉發射場

The streets of the Haidian District of Beijing have been lined as the China Academy of Space Technology have displayed their first achievements in space exploration to the adoring public. A large motorised parade carriers the Dongfanghong 1 (PRC 1) satellite, China's first satellite, and it's launch vehicle, the Changzheng-1 rocket, through the streets of Beijing in preparation for their eventual departure to the Jiuquan launch facility in inner Mongolia. These are the products of the 'Two bombs, One satellite' program championed by the Great Chairman Mao, a sign of the success of the People's Republic and a promise for a brighter, advanced future for the nation.

The parade passed through the streets of Beijing before reaching the main location of Tiananmen Square, where thousands gather to watch to see the our nations great achievements. Chairman Mao, atop Tiananmen Gate, watches on and salutes the spacecraft and their creators, who follow suit in formation, saluting back to the Chairman. Joining him is Premier Zhou Enlai, wife to the Chairman Jiang Qing and revolutionaries Zhang Chunqiao, Yao Wenyuan and Wang Hongwen, who watch on. The crowd chants slogans praising the revolutionary ideals of Chairman Mao and the Party in unison, as the parade moves on.

The Red Guard have stood diligently by watching the parade, ensuring the safety of those who have come out to see the vessels pass through Beijing. The vessels will travel to the Dongcheng District to Beijingzhan Jie, where they will be loaded onto specialised heavy trains which will carry the vessels to their final destination in Inner Mongolia. In a speech from the head of the Academy of Space Technology, the launch will likely take place later in the year, and will present the first launch of any space craft from China in history.

INTERNAL COMMUNIQUE FROM PREMIER ZHOU ENLAI TO MARSHAL LIN BIAO CONCERNING PROJECT 571

周恩來總理致林彪元帥關於五七一工程的內部公報

Comrade Marshal,

Your message is warmly received.

I understand and echo your concerns about the fate of our nation. The passing of President Liu Shaoqi was both disturbing as it was saddening. In my position, the balance of power is shifting. The Chairman has felt the challenge posed to him following the Great Leap Forward and is taking all measures to ensure his own position remains unaffected, at the expense of his comrades and great revolutionaries across the nation. By entrusting our future to the Gang of Four, to whom I feel his own personal feelings have clouded his decision making, and to the Red Guard, he places our great nation into an unprecedent state of turmoil, one that I fear will be fatal if we do not act quickly.

The Chairman has become gluttonous on his own power. Just today, as I stood with him and those traitors at Tiananmen to salute an achievement we should have achieved a decade ago, I felt disgusted that he would take credit for such achievements on the back of such failures to progress our nation. The Chairman will always be the father of the People's Republic, but sometimes, the old must make way for the new.

This 'Cultural Revolution' has served its course, it has achieved the little it was destined to achieve and to allow it to continue further endangers us all. The time has come for us to act.

If we are to act, we cannot do so in the public eye. We cannot afford a commotion at such a turbulent time. If we act for the eyes of the world to see, we would risk presenting our nation as week, unstable and could risk attracting such powers the the Soviets or the Americans to take advantage. We must give the impression that all is well, and that this is simply an internal change of policy.

We must act swiftly, silently and co-ordinate. We must rely on the People's Liberation Army to secure our objectives and eliminate the enemies of the Revolution. We must target the Gang of Four and their associates, and we must subdue the Chairman in a secure location. The PLA and the People's Police must act to arrest members of the Red Guard and their associates. This will take planning and precision. It must be done in a single motion. We cannot afford any mistakes.

I will confer with other members of the Party for what will happen next. Rest assured, we will rectify the mistakes that have been made and end them once and for all.

HUN KONINKRIJK TOEN, ONS KONINKRIJK NU! • THEIR KINGDOM THEN, OUR KINGDOM NOW!

| Januari 1970 || Den Haag, Koninkrijk der Nederlanden |

Just under four full centuries ago, the today independent and ever prosperous Kingdom was, in fact, under the subjugation of another, and, consequently, found itself at the forefront of both a religious and cultural upheaval, an iconoclasm which pitted the Catholic majority of the country, then known as the 'Spanish' or 'Habsburg Netherlands', against a growing minority of particularly ardent Reformists, self-proclaimed adherents of the Calvinist theological stream. Reaching it's climax during the feast day of Saint Lawrence, 10 August 1566, that which is described as 'iconoclastic fury', would promulgate the Beeldenstorm, a series of several smaller Protestant iconoclasts, namely targeting Catholic institutions and arts across the Low Countries. From the southernmost hamlet of Steenvoorde in present-day France, where it began, to the commercial city centre of Antwerp, it would expand as far north as Amsterdam, and eventually even further, to Groningen, just short of the Wadden Sea. In little under two months, at least 400 Catholic churches, monasteries, convents, chapels, and even hospitals fell victim to sack and desecration. The Dutch Revolt had just begun with a fiery, belligerent resound that did well to nettle the Spanish Throne, and moreover set into motion a series of events that would ultimately alter the course of history forever, though not without consequence.

It would prove to take several arduous years of internal conflict, sectarian strife, countless sieges and city sacks at the hands of the Spanish, and an attempted pacification between Catholic and Protestant leading to a short-lived "Calvinist Republic", though eventually, the basis of an independent republic was at last realised within the Union of Utrecht, formalised, signed, and declared in January of 1579 in the city of which it derives it's inherent namesake. The treaty espoused the idea of complete religious freedom, unifying the opposing theologies within seven signatory provinces; Groningen, Frisia, Overijssel, Guelders, Utrecht, Holland and Zeeland to form the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. Following the formation, still well in it's infancy, the proclaimed "Dutch Republic" would go on to profess it's independence to Spain, along with the rest of the globe through the Act of Abjuration in 1581.

Notwithstanding these efforts, the fledgling Republic's sovereignty would go unrecognized by Spain and it's Monarchs until 1609 under an agreement known formally as the Twelve Year's Truce. During the time directly lying between the Republic's declaration of independence, and this subsequent truce, the Spanish attempted tirelessly on numerous occasions to weaken and dismantle the provincial confederation which, by this point, contended against them with English and French Protestant recognition and support, with historic battles and sieges fought to achieve this end at Maastricht, Tournai, Steenwijk, Niezijl, Noordhorn, Lochem, Antwerp, Empel, Grave, Zutphen, Venlo, Nijmegen, Deventer, Huy, Meurs, as well as several others who's events have been thoroughly preserved through record, art, and first-hand accountings. Even with the overwhelming string of key victories garnered by Spanish forces, most notable being the capture of Antwerp, though without exemption from their own share of devastating defeats and or pyrrhic "miracles", as the events at Empel are often described, the Habsburg campaigns were fought largely for naught, insofar that they did little to curtail the inevitable. All in all, the military operations pursued by the Spanish under the command of the Duke of Parma, Alessandro Farnese, merely recaptured and ensured the preservation of a Catholic state in the Southern Netherlands. Nevertheless, the Union of the Seven Netherlands were at long last recognized as a sovereign power to all the others beside Spain, who yet still refused to recognise the sovereign Dutch Republic.

Upon expiry of the truce in 1621, the Thirty Years' War that had erupted just three years prior, and the Habsburg Throne once more spent resources and manpower over the decades that followed in futile attempt to reassert control over the independent Nederlanden. However, the 1639 Battle of the Downs, one of the most prominent Dutch naval victories against the Spanish Armada, not only made evident the shifting balance of naval power in Europe, but demarcated the beginning of the end of Habsburg Spain's dominance of the world. On top of the humiliation of this defeat, the Battle of the Downs would serve as the final military engagement between the Free Dutch and the Habsburgs as, in 1648, the belligerents of the conflict were brought to peace under accords drafted as early on as 1646 and signed by all parties two years thereafter at Osnabrück and Münster, in what is known as the Peace of Westphalia, officially ending the Thirty Years' War, a conflict which pitted the Catholic and Protestant powers in a struggle for religious hegemony over Europe.

Today, the lasting effects of the initial Dutch Revolt and the 80 years it took to achieve independent status are still engrained in the hearts and minds of all Nederlanderen. Though not immediately evident, if not for the contributions of Orange, the modern world as is known, let alone our Netherlands, would hardly be as recognizable.

IL TRIONFO ITALINO • THE ITALIAN TRIUMPH

| January 1970 || Rome, Kingdom of Italy |

As the morning sun casts a golden glow over Rome's historic landmarks, the city stirs to life. The Colosseum and St. Peter's Basilica bask in the warm light, while the Roman Forum's ruins echo with ancient tales. In this serene moment, Defense Minister Giulio Andreotti's voice emerges on the radio.....

[Radio Broadcast]

Giulio Andreotti: "My fellow countrymen..."

Today, we stand at a crossroads in our nation's history – a moment of profound change and renewal. It is with a mix of emotions – humility, determination, and hope – that I address you in the aftermath of recent events that have reshaped the course of our beloved Italy.

"Our land has long been a great cradle of civilization, the home of great thinkers, artists, and visionaries. Yet, in recent times, we have faced challenges that have tested the very foundations of our society. It was with a heavy heart and a deep sense of responsibility that we, the leaders of Christian Democracy and our allies in the Italian Social Movement, embarked on a course of action that aimed to safeguard the principles that define our identity."

"Our actions may been seen as drastic by some here at home and around the globe, but rest assured, they were born out of a profound love for Italy and a commitment to securing its future. It was not an easy decision, but sometimes, the preservation of our values and preservation of our vary identity demands difficult choices."

"As we enter a period of profound transition, we must keep in mind that the path we tread is not one of selfish ambition or personal gain. Our goals are noble and resolute: to restore order, unity, and stability, to root out corruption and inefficiency, and to ensure that Italy reclaims its rightful place as a beacon of progress and prosperity in the world."

"I recognize that the success of this endeavor hinges upon the participation and support of every Italian citizen. Our nation's strength lies in its people."

"This is not a time for division, but for national cohesion. We extend our hand to all who share our vision of a stronger, more prosperous Italy. Your perspectives, ideas, and insights are vital as we forge a new path forward."

"Together, we shall usher in an era of progress and prosperity for Italy, one not bound and paralyzed by the red menace that aims to tear down all we have worked for."

"Let us remember that this change is not just about the triumph of the few, but the triumph of all Italians, of our whole nation. We envision an Italy that stands tall, confident, and united, and without fear of our beloved nation being torn from us by the sinister forces that have divided and destroyed the European continent."

"May God bless Italy, may God bless the King, and and may His wisdom guide us in the days and years to come."

NEW INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS, DUTCH AND SOVIET EXCHANGE

O CAPITÓLIO, BRASÍLIA, REPÚBLICA FEDERAL DO BRASIL

| Two new international partnerships have been announced from Brasilia, one with the Netherlands and another with the Soviet Union. These developments reflect the 1969 Constitution’s commitment to "pursue peace, prosperity, and mutual respect in international relations.” The decision to partner with both nations proceeds from this commitment, as well as the fallout from the attempted CIA-coup in 1964. Brasilia continues to display a weariness and hesitation toward expanded relations with its northern neighbour: the USA. Goulart prefers to keep Washington at arms length, and neither party appears interested in pursuing closer or warmer relations in the foreseeable future. These two new strategic exchanges coincide with Brazil’s current 5-year plan, seeking to expand the country’s economic prospects with two new trading partners.

Starting with the Netherlands, the two countries have announced collaboration on several commercial and military efforts. Fokker and Embraer have announced development on a new multirole fighter jet to debut in 1975, alongside a commercial supersonic airliner to debut in 1978 and private jetliner to debut in 1976. Avibras and Damen have announced collaboration on shipbuilding efforts to develop an oil tanker, new missile frigate-, and aircraft carrier-classes by 1976, the aircraft carrier is yet to be commissioned by either country and likely will be an export model. Mectron and Thales have announced partnerships in developing military technologies including a new military and civilian radar system and air defence system: they plan to announce a new medium-range surface-to-air defence system in 1975, as well as a new military and weather radar systems by 1973. Romi and Phillips have announced a wide range of new civilian and military technology projects: the development of a new mainframe computing cluster in The Hague with joint ownership with 1,900 MIPS, an economy colour television set to launch in 1972, a new Video Cassette Recorder to debut in 1975, an economy polymer microwave oven, and a new pocket calculator. Many technologies will be designed and developed in the Netherlands and built at low costs in Brazilian factories. These are preliminary projects, with many more to follow as Brazil and the Netherlands’ economic, political, and geopolitical agenda remain aligned. The historic neighbours remain committed to their shared interests as the world remains deeply divided.

Another agreement between the Soviet Union and Brazil has been announced, though this mostly concerns matters of trade. Brazil and the Soviet Union will begin an equal exchange annually of goods, forgoing a currency intermediary. As part of this agreement, Brazil will begin exporting a variety of foodstuffs: coffee, beef, poultry, wheat, grains, and fruits. In exchange, the Soviet Union will an equal value of crude oil. This agreements will bolster Brazil's agricultural sector and provide it with more flexible energy options. In addition, Soviet technical experts are invited to provide invaluable advice and guidance for the Brazilian government’s current industrialisation plan. This agreement hopes to foster mutual growth and economic prosperity between two nations which have been politically and geographically distant. The presence of Soviet technical experts will not only advance Brazil's industrialisation efforts but also fostered a spirit of cooperation and learning among local engineers and workers. This falls in line with the corporatist and class collaborative industrial policy pursued by Brazil. This expertise will pave the way for advancements in agricultural practices and industrial innovations, resulting hopefully in improved crop yields in Brazil's and more mechanised agriculture.

All of these political developments will be followed and reported on closely over the coming years, forming a pillar of Brazil’s new economic, geopolitical, and social policy. |

    — You are listening to Hellenic Radio Service.

Good morning Hellenes and welcome to the Morning News, this is Kalamoira Christakis reporting live from our main studio in Piraeus.

The Kefalogiannis Administration has announced the establishment of the Hellenic Motor Company, or shortly, ELEA, to produce the new and innovative concept of electric automobiles - a fresh idea for the world and the European continent. ELEA, which will takeover former Gaikamos factories in Athens and Adrianople will also open two new factories to boost production and widen its net across the Hellenic nation. The new factories have been designated to be built in Bournabat in Smyrna and Mandres in Nicosia, expected to employ around 780 Hellenes in total, a number that becomes 2 450 once the Gaikamos takeover is completed.

Electric cars have a rich history that dates back to the 19th century. In the late 1800s, inventors like Thomas Davenport and Robert Anderson developed early electric vehicles. However, the internal combustion engine's rise in popularity overshadowed electric cars, a concept that is now close to being forgotten. Prime Minister Evangelia Kefalogiannis has stated that with ELEA's concept, Hermes 2000, the Hellenic Royal Government is hoping to become a pioneer in green transport - especially considering the oil reserves around the world running short, with the globe under the risk of an oil crisis. Hermes 2000's first prototype will be mass produced by the funding of the government and will also receive additional funds from native and foreign investors. The first wave of production is expected to take place at the end of 1970.

In an era we call the Second Greek Renaissance, the Hellenic Kingdom continues to shine as a paragon of progress and innovation. The patented Hermes 2000, once released for sale, is expected to become the first mass-produced electric vehicle of the world and Europe, bringing an end to the oil dependency that has plagued the globe for decades. Thanks to the designs of ingenious inventors Konstantinos Adraktas, Giannis Papadopoulos, Eleftheria Alexandropoulos and Anush Petrosyan, we are one step closer to a greener world and a future bright. Thank you for listening to the Morning News, and now, we will be reporting 7-day weather forecasts for the Hellenic Kingdom and Europe with Polikarpos Anastasiadis after the commercials.
