There's an extensive discussion thread on the "Got Issues" forum trying to analyze them.

Aww... I don't believe I've ever had one of those. :-(

Tea, table, or basting? Yes, it matters.

Do you prefer the latter? (in the nation's factbook).

It's all Latin to me. Besides which, I tend to prefer the spork, which, I assume, is some sort of blasphemy.

I think I just watched the most British movie of my life: This Beautiful Fantastic (2016).

Highly recommended. It was a heart-warming story in these dark times.

It does appear you've not received an Easter Egg Issue, as you don't have a badge for it. But I can't fathom how you've managed this, given the age of your nation. There's one Easter Egg Issue that comes automatically once you've answered a certain number of issues (and it's not that many). Unless you dismissed the issue, I guess.

There's a couple good guides players have put together in order to aid the finding of easter eggs, but I won't link them in case you don't want them spoiled.

Ruinenlust wrote:Aww... I don't believe I've ever had one of those. :-(

Now how did you do that? I think I was already at 3 or 4 before I even realised it was a thing. Despite having a decent memory it also meant I kind of forgot which one I had already gotten. So as a tip I would suggest making a note whenever you receive or found one. Happy hunting!

Greetings!

It is my distinct pleasure as Cultural Officer of 10000 Islands to announce the return of the Best Flag Competition to 10000 Islands! This event has a storied history, having been run for years by Anime daisuki but fallen out of circulation in recent times. Accordingly, the Cultural Office has decided to bring this back! To further enhance the cultural experience of the contest, we have decided to supplement it with a contest for national mottos and to invite our friends from other regions to participate with us.

Best Flag Competition

Over the next week, nations may "sign up" by submitting an image of their flag in Linkthis sign up thread, along with a link to the flag that is being submitted, or via NationStates telegram to HumanSanity using the nation with the flag you wish to submit. The rules for submissions are as follows:
  • Flags do not need to be resized when they are submitted, but will be resized by competition organizers to 130px width (if rectangular) or 100px on each side (if square).

  • Submitted flags must be original artwork by the player. Flags may not be game-provided flags. If your flag was created by another player, you may still enter it but you must credit the player who created it when you make your submission.

  • Flags must meet NationStates site rules and may not promote hate speech or otherwise promote fascist or hateful ideologies.

  • The flag must be currently in use on a NationStates nation controlled by the player.

  • All nations are welcome to participate regardless of 10000 Islands citizenship status.

  • Any disputes over the rules will be adjudicated by the event planner, HumanSanity.

  • Each player may make only one submission but may submit a flag on any nation.

Submissions will open on 4/8 and close on 4/15 at 5 PM EDT.

After the sign up period, flags submitted via the forum will be randomly assigned into "groups" for a round of forum-side voting between 4/15 and 4/22. The top several entries in each group will advance to the final round of voting between 4/22 and 4/29.

Flags submitted via NationStates telegram will be voted upon separately using the NationStates on-site polling platform in 10000 Islands between 4/15 and 4/22. More information can be found here

After these preliminary "group" voting rounds, the final round of voting will occur entirely on the 10000 Islands forum. Exact voting procedures will be announced once the number of entries becomes more clear.

The ultimate winner of the Best Flag Competition will receive a 50,000 Taco prize and a copy of the NS Trading Card Season 1 Epic Anime daisuki. This give away is made possible due to a generous donation from Feu de Glace who has the sincerest appreciations of the Islands. The runner up will receive a 10,000 Taco prize and a copy of Season 2 Legendary Candensia.

A separate prize will be available to the best performing on-site flag - they will receive a Season 1 Epic Tzo NS trading card.

Best Motto Competition

Separately, the Cultural Office will be running a best motto competition. The best motto competition will be run through the Link10000 Islands Discord including submissions and voting.

Submissions can be made in the channel #best-motto-submission. After a week of submissions, we will enter a voting period structured based on the number of submissions at the discretion of the Cultural Officer. When the voting period opens, a channel for discussion (#best-motto-discussion) and a channel for voting (#best-motto-voting) will be opened. Participants may discuss in the discussion channel and cast their ballots in the voting channel.

The following are rules for motto submissions:

  • Mottos must be the motto of a nation on NationStates controlled by the player.

  • Mottos must meet all NationStates site rules and may not promote hateful ideologies. Additionally, all submissions and discussion must meet Discord rules.

  • Mottos must be relatively original. Mottos which are made by the NationStates motto autogenerator will not be accepted.

  • Any disputes over the rules will be adjudicated by the event planner, HumanSanity.

  • Each player may make only one submission.

  • Players may provide translations for their mottos to be listed on the ballot if they are in a foreign language.

Motto submissions are due 4/15 at 5 PM EDT.

After the sign up period, mottos will be randomly assigned into "groups" for a round of voting between 4/15 and 4/22. The top several entries in each group will advance to the final round of voting between 4/22 and 4/29.

Exact voting procedures will be announced once the number of entries becomes more clear.

The winner of the Best Motto Competition will receive 25,000 Tacos and the runner up will receive 10,000 Tacos. The winner of the Best Motto Competition will also receive a copy of Season 2 Legendary Wrapper and the runner up will receive a copy of Season 2 Epic Dr george.

Nice!

question out of the blue but I’m a little concerned about it nonetheless: does anyone think COVID-19 will affect the fall semester? also hope everyone is safe and healthy!

I don't think it will affect it a ton but I believe there will still be cases around the world.

I've been thinking of submitting a flag for the competition XKI is holding, however, I can't seem to decide which one to go with. So, would you all be so kind to help me decide by ranking about six flags in the poll below?:

Well obviously yes, the question is how and to what extent? No one is getting out of it unscathed but depending on where you live, the effects may (or may not) be negligible. In my case, the only thing that would really change for me in the short term is likely to be reduced direct social intercourse. Economically, I will either see an ever so slightly worse situation, or an ever so slightly better situation, since I live and study in Sweden. As you may know, student loans/grants are quite generous here, with near zero interest, making it possible to easily make a profit just by putting the money in a savings bank or possibly by investing in [sustainable] stocks/funds, as I have now. A change in that interest rate is more or less expected, but it is unlikely to be so radical that it would make a noticeable difference. It also helps that education is free here, so I don't need to worry about fees getting higher. As for the cost of study materials, I don't expect that much of a change, except for electronics such as computers, which I already have. Best of all, is that since I don't have to pay taxes yet, I won't feel any tax hikes that come from government bailing out businesses and the increase of public debt. Of course I could be wrong, I'm no econ major after all, just a humble animator.

Ramps.

As in, what's the point of ladders and stairs anyway? If the point is to transport ourselves vertically, then ramps do that pretty well too. So do lifts - including the manually operated ones.

In re the poll I believe this refers to, I was tempted by ladders but decided on Dinosaurs, with the hope that there would eventually come a discussion of the fact that there was probably a point in the evolutionary chain where Dragons were inadvertently dropped. Probably because of the hollow bones - we don't have a lot of fossil evidence for birds either. What draws my interest on this is that mythology across all cultures includes one form or another of dragons, and I don't think that just came out of nowhere.

Verdant Haven wrote:Actually, it does not need approval from anybody. The POTUS has absolute authority, with zero legal checks or balances of any kind, to utilize the American nuclear arsenal against any target, at any time, for any reason. While the National Command Authority includes certain other high-ranking individuals, none of them are required to agree to or sign off on a president's nuclear orders.
...
Bear in mind, I am not suggesting that I expect Trump to launch a nuclear attack. He is the sort of deranged egotistical madman who I expect fantasizes about it, but I also think that there are enough vaguely sane human beings in the hierarchy...

When I first read the post from Lousykitty about the nuclear war "checks and balances" I was really, really hoping they were correct. I wanted so much for this to be correct, that I didn't go look it up.

Remember the movie Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb? If you haven't seen it, now would be a good time to watch it. If you have, I still think now would be a good time to watch it again. I know it's unbearably old (1964) and seems terribly outdated now, but it does provide excellent comic relief for the tension we are all experiencing. If that doesn't convince you, watch it because of Peter Sellers - who plays 3 different roles so convincingly that I didn't even realize that, until after I had watched the entire movie the first time and saw the credits, then I had to watch it again. And Stanley Kubrik - best director ever.

When I learned about the Navy fiasco and listened to the speech referenced, I immediately thought of the movie's character Brig. Gen. Jack D. Ripper, who provides a lot of the comic relief. The kind of derangement that character displays is exactly what came to my mind when Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas Modly berated the crew for their support of Capt. Brett Crozier.

The point is that what I fear most is not that any one person will set off a nuclear war. It's that a string of improbable things will happen that will have that end result. We have this bizarre political environment right now, where fake news and press leaks and unilateral actions by the president, in combination with the uncertainty we all feel around the pandemic could conspire to make that happen.

Edit - unrelated:
I checked the TLA Diplomacy Hub Discord channel and found there was in fact something for me there from Greylyn, which I had failed to notice because I had turned off my Discord Notifications. I've turned them back on now and would like to help initiate planning for any kind of joint-venture Earth Day event. I think we all need a distraction right now, and a reminder that if the pandemic doesn't kill us, climate change still might.

I forget the exact details but animated flags have to have smaller areas than static ones.

I have a group of friends who want to meet up in a hotspot in July. It was originally set for April and that had to be cancelled. There is no way that it will be happening in July either! I have not had the heart to say anything yet. People got agitated when I said the same things about the April meetup when things were starting to get bad in March. They can learn the hard way again... (Needless to say that I will not be participating.)

…..and this is exactly the problem with puppets....it is a race to the bottom. First a couple of puppets did the trick, then you required dozens, then more than a hundred and I think there are people now with over a thousand. It takes all of the fun of cooperation out of the mini-games and leaves the card collectors with a slew of uninteresting copies. You are of course free to do what you want but I can't understand that it is allowed and even encouraged by several game mechanics.

Oregone wrote:question out of the blue but I’m a little concerned about it nonetheless: does anyone think COVID-19 will affect the fall semester? also hope everyone is safe and healthy!

i think its very possible. what is not known is not known and a very great remains either uncertain or very much unknown.
it looks like though, that it will kind of run its course and fade way. however long it takes to do so.

but i really think nature is giving us a warning, and that, when this one is gone, in few years, or even months,
there'll be another and another.

and that environmental conditions humans are creating are causing this to happen.
and people seem to be still not getting how urgent it is going to become increasingly import, to reduce the human birthrate,
and reliance on technologies that are based on combustion.

what i believe we really need to be concerned about, is a future that may not be that far away, when sea level rise starts cause massive salt water incursion into aquifers, and also direct saline flooding of low lying food producing areas, thus lowering nutrition and increasing suseptability to even familiar diseases, and at the same time an even accelerting rate of their mutation into newer and thus more deadly forms.

and all of that is again, tied to carbon (which besides its industrial implications, is at the same time the bases of life) and population driving the rise in waste carbon compounds.

this one plague, by itself, it will end, and by itself, not take a big enough bite out of human population to alter the equasion.
even the comming (and still at least partially preventable) eco-pocalyps will have a morning after. but how much of what inherits that morning after will be anything like the species humans are now, is really up to how quickly we reverse human population increase, recognize the need to do so, and until it is reduced to a tiny fraction of what is now, the very real and pressing need also, to accellerate the trasition away from dependence on combustion for energy and transportation.

All of my puppets exist for non-farming purposes. Most are diplomatic and the rest are me squatting on names that I was surprised to find available. I can barely manage the ones I have (every nation that I run besides this one has a 48 hour issue throttle). I cannot fathom how others are running dozens. That sounds like a full-time job (especially if they are not throttling issues)! I do a bit of "farming" with the stack I have but that is not the reason I have it.
