Government Post
Good day all,
As you may have seen, our spring editions of the Greenness Index and List of Exceptionally Green Nations have recently been completed and dated for May 22. I did make some minor updates this time around. Regarding the GI, those nations that were in the bottom 10 were dubbed the "Brown Thumb" nations, as opposed to those at the top 10 being dubbed the "Green Thumb" nations. I'm sure it takes just as much effort to reach a negative index as it does to reach near or >1, so congrats to those nations no matter how you look at it!
For the LEGN, I have recognized one nation in each of the four categories for the greatest statistical rise since the last edition and have placed a green thumb icon next to their nation's name. Congrats to Ransium for their rise in Environmental Beauty, Weather, and Eco-friendliness, and Northern Wood for their rise in Tourism (despite the pandemic)! Additionally, I've numbered each nation to the left of their name according to their rank in Forest at the time the data was gathered, so hopefully this will clear up any confusion about how everything is arranged in order.
The next editions should come out around mid-September just before the next election, so make sure to keep an eye out for them!

Well, whatever it was it happened rather quickly.
On April 12th there were 50 nations. By the 28th there were 280. By May 4th 394, and by the 10th 419.
Looks like it might've been part of the DrewDurnilpocalypse.

It threw me for a bit of a loop reading that, because I actually used to watch the guy. Found the NS videos, and it's a mix of "Awww how cute" and "Oh no, I can't see much good coming from this". And seeing as the site was doing pretty bad, the latter seems to have held up. Kinda reminds me of what happened to a Minecraft server by the name of 2B2T, but to a much lesser extent.
What is DrewDurnilpocalypse?
Also known as the Drewpocalypse, a great YouTuber named Drew Durnil made two videos about NationStates, causing 30,000 new nations to form, including Middle Barael, which led to our creation.
From what I can tell, Youtuber Drew Durnil (makes some good Civ and HoI4 content) made a video on NationStates. Then tens of thousands of his fans flooded the NS servers and crashed them. As of now, there's a lot more people than usual. That should taper off, as a lot of these people will likely stop joining as the novelty wears off after a week, but it was a defining event for the site. Apparently, there was a condemnation for his nation up, but it failed. I personally think it should have passed, not in a malicious sense, but in a joking matter.
Edit:
Oh. Well, welcome! Hope you enjoy your stay!
Thanks for the recognition :)
I have no explanation for the rise in Tourism in the midst of a pandemic, and can only guess at folks' misplaced confidence in our healthcare system...Perhaps I should have a word with our Tourism Minister, as he may have implemented some overly-aggressive marketing campaigns to bring tourists into the country.

I wish I've got as much influence and fans as Drew Durnil.
Atsvea, Lord Dominator, Canaltia, Outer Bele Levy Epies, and 2 othersMiddle Barael, and The young ur
That is also my guess but I can't figure out how that had such a huge impact on TRTHNBB in particular. Unless I missed something I don't think the region gets mentioned in either one of the videos. So I understand the feeder regions to have a huge influx of new players as a result of this but a relative unkown and "comatose" region like TRTHNBB!? It is not like every medium sized region has gone up about 400 players. We have gone up about 10 or 20 or so....so something must have sparked the interest of many players in that particular region to explain such massive growth.
I was about to say maybe they were featured during that time, but they don't have the tag for it. Surprising really that they've been around for quite a while and have never been featured.
Presumably they were in the middle of a telegram recruiting drive when the wave hit and decided to lean into it.

But i know I shouldn’t be given that much power.

Congratulations to all three on their new appointments, and, kudos to Foreign Affairs maven Kuriko and XKI Minister of Labor HumanSanity who have now filled all diplomatic positions in the region.
~ Regional Cultural Officer HumanSanity brought on several new Office Assistants to aid in the development of regional events and ongoing projects. Welcome to the Culture Team Rovid-9, Constantinolia, Wille-Harlia, South Orwelland, and Valentian Elysium.
~ Dedicated Islander Eastern New England was appointed 10000 Islands WA Secretary by Chief Executive Markanite
~ The multi-talented Grea Kriopia was selected as 10000 Islands Secretary of State and will be supporting Kuriko in the WA Sec-Gen role and maintaining regular WA voting polls on the XKI forum.
~ Regional super-administrator Paffnia has been named Deputy Regional Reserve Chair
~ Gaming User Marxist germany, Krystalveil, and HumanSanity have been appointed as RMB RP Moderators for the newly created XKI RP region A Taco Archipelago
With the dramatic influx of new nations to the game after the Reddit boom earlier this year, the Council of Nine sought a creative solution to the accommodation of those newer nations that crave a quicker style of RP than TGs and the forum could allow. Not wanting ongoing RP to choke the regional RMB, the decision was reached to create an RMB-only region, with an embassy and RMB access exclusive to 10000 Islands residents.
Thus, A Taco Archipelago was born, and just in time for the latest wave of new nations in April, courtesy of Youtuber Drew. After a short period of transition and a few growing pains, the new region’s RMB is thriving with RP activity, international intrigue, murders, poisonings, skirmishes , and trade agreements. Lore in the region is growing at an exponential rate, and with such easy access and a welcoming core of RPers, early results suggest A Taco Archipelago will become a significant part of the 10000 Islands landscape.
First and foremost, congratulations and sincere thanks must be extended to 10000 Islands’ exceptional Recruiting Team all of whom burned the midnight oil throughout April to tackle both of the Youtube waves of new nations to the game. The results of those efforts speak for themselves. At the start of April, XKI’s population was 1464 nations, by the end of the month 2761 nations were calling XKI home. Total new nations joining 10000 Islands during April was 1297. While there will no doubt be a downturn as the uncommitted nations begin to CTE (any day now) the region is anticipating good retention, thanks to a broad scope of engaging regional activities.
~ Recent arrival to XKI Constantinolia was named April’s Featured Nation. Constantinolia has joined the XKI Cultural Team and is active in the field of NS Card Collecting, boasting the top deck in the region. Congratulations on being selected as Featured Nation by Deputy Minister of Education Sargon reman
~ Nations Grea Kriopia and Controlitia have been appointed as members of regional Community Watch to provide more moderation and greater security in light of the huge increase in new nations.
~ Cultural Officer HumanSanity hosted a variety of Interviews with prominent NationStates players as part of the 10000 Islands Best Flag and Motto Competition. Voting in the competition has now ended, and the winning flags and mottos can be viewed at the bottom of this dispatch
~ Senior Senator for Himes West and regional RP Czar (Gaming User) Marxist germany held the April Trade Pacts Competition where nations sought to engage others in mutual trade agreements. The winning entry Liberal Understand and Agreement on Commerce featured agreements between nations Paffnia, HumanSanity, The United Royal Islands of Euramathania, Dorab, Jabberwocky, and Tuga nation. Congratulations to the winners, as well as to runner-up Trade Pact Perria International.
~ Congratulations also to Senator for Blue Canaria North Pelanesomunk who was selected as April’s Q2 Rookie of the Quarter. Pel has been quite active in the region, was appointed interim Senator for BCN, joining TITO, and being awarded top recruiter for March. Well done!.
~ Cartographer-General Paffnia launched the new Islands Space Programme, focusing initially on lunar exploration, and allowing nations to invest their hard-earned Tacos on the components and technology required to establish bases on the newly crafted moon-map. This program leaves infinite room for expansion into the wider galaxy and will provide years of adventure for XKI residents.
~ WA Delegate Kuriko announced a weekend visit to embassy region India. A variety of Islanders popped over to their RMB and Discord to say ‘Namaste’ during the event, and RMB exchanges between the two regions extended well beyond the weekend.
~ With the many hundreds of new nations arriving on the region’s shores in April, a variety of live RMB Q and A sessions were coordinated by Minister of Labor HumanSanity. Prominent Islanders and government officials took to the RMB to answer questions, provide guidance and welcome newcomers to the region. Thanks to Markanite, Kuriko, (Gaming User)Marxist germany, Kanta Hame, THX1138, The tasmanian islands, HumanSanity, HN67, Paffnia, and Jabberwocky for guiding these essential orientation sessions.
~ Chief Executive Markanite proudly recognized two prominent nations with Awards in April: For their ongoing work on the front lines in the fight against Covid-19, health care professional Tuga nation was awarded the 10000 Islands Purple Heart for outstanding bravery. To honour their recent election as WA Secretary General, and in recognition of their ongoing service to the region and the wider game, WA Delegate Kuriko was presented with The 10000 Islands Legion of Merit medal. Kuriko received yet more recognition from the International community, as outlined below:
Congratulations to 10000 Islands Delegate Kuriko, who completed an exceptional run of success in April by receiving overwhelming support for Commendation by the Security Council. Congratulations as well to Markanite who co-authored the successful commendation. Also present among April’s XKI resolution authors was (Gaming User) Marxist germany

Ransium, I received issue 1,099, and it was so well thought out and presented, and with such excellent options, that I was moved to say so! I reject so many issues nowadays that it's excellent when I can read through something from start to finish, weigh the options, and then choose something. And, no nasty surprises in the effects. 10/10! :-D

Are all passed WA bills enforced in member nations?

Yes, you will receive a very strongly-worded letter if you defy any resolutions!
What I mean is, can you install any policies counter to international law?
I am not aware of any WA resolutions that directly conflict with potential national policies. Of course, that does not mean that there are not any.
Thanks I’m glad you liked the issue ^_^ I was surprised they let me keep all the geeky remote sensing stuff. The editor stats the issue so that you liked the stat effects wasn’t my doing (unless I self edited it? But I don’t think so...) Anyway I always like to hear when people enjoy the issues I wrote, it gives me warm fuzzies.

Ok, so now that the spring semester has ended, I have more time than I know what to do with. I had originally planned to take my driver's license this summer but unfortunately have had to put that on hold, because apparently I'm not eligible to take a state-sponsored low interest loan. While I do have the capital to do it without a loan, it could potentially leave me in a less than desirable state of financial affairs in the future. It has since hit me that support for students is next to nonexistent outside of the grants and loans payed out during the semesters. I'm hearing more and more students complaining about issues finding an occupation during the summer to support themselves and there's seemingly no support to be had.
So, as it stands, I'm now in a position where I have to choose between the supposed security of having a driver's license, versus the security of having funds in case I move or in the case of emergencies. Mind you, either choice could end in disaster given the right set of circumstances. To elaborate; if for example the driver's license ends up not being of use and/or I end up having to move to reduce transit times, which fully depends on whether or not I end up being able to work remotely or not. Ideally, I wouldn't have to choose between the two, but unfortunately I do. I'm currently leaning towards saving the money, as I'm betting on rational behaviour on the part of people and companies in that they'll continue to work remotely (if able) for the foreseeable future. In a sense, this is kind of ironic, since I at the same time abhor the Swedish legal system that de facto expects rational behaviour even in irrational situations, such as in cases of self defence where one party is obviously acting irrationally. So to say that I should perhaps bet on irrational behaviour instead wouldn't be that odd.
Back to not knowing what to do with my time, I have been thinking of joining a Home Guard unit in my county or even the army for some time now (though in the later case opting out of expeditionary service in favour of strictly Nordic/national service). Thinking about it rationally leaves out army service, since I still want to have a civilian occupation as well, but then there's the fact that I'll presumably have less time to work on my portfolio since Home Guard units are supposedly much more active now, during the current times of crisis (not that we are ever free of them). Speaking of the military, I'm no longer eligible for conscription due to me having a [benign] tumour in my right eye, so it would all be voluntary and not because I'm compelled to. Thought I would clear that up since Sweden has active conscription laws and not everyone may be OK with that.
But enough of me venting my frustrations and thoughts, does anyone have any thoughts? How is everyone faring at this point in time?
This is actually quite complex. First up, every General Assembly resolution has a category displayed at the top. When it passes it has a small effect on the stats of all member nations. That effect is entirely determined by the category. Environmental resolutions, for example, boost eco-stats while penalising one or more of a nation's industries. In terms of stats only the category matters. The content of the resolution is entirely for flavour or roleplay, although to be legal it has to avoid contradicting previous resolutions. It's also worth noting that the stat effect of a resolution is small, comparable to answering one issue.
There are a number of GA resolutions that can be contradicted by your issue answers. Slavery is banned, certain environmental standards are required , abortion has to be made available and there are considerable restrictions on capital punishment. There are a lot other other examples too. If you're in the WA the game will not prevent you choosing answers that break WA law.
Players interested in the General Assembly game have long debated the question of non-compliance. For roleplay purposes, in the GA forum it's often assumed that as part of the rules all member states attempt in good faith to comply with all resolutions. This helps with the regular flow of orcs and trolls asserting that they're keeping their slave markets and public executions and demanding to know who's going to stop them. There's a long and ongoing debate, however, around abortion with a number of serious non-trolling players who are actively involved in the Assembly refusing to comply with the resolutions legalising it. The current situation regarding this involves the passage of a resolution imposing fines on non-compliant nations and calling for other member states to impose sanctions. The fines and sanctions are purely roleplayed, however, and have no impact on stats. So basically you can roleplay noncompliance and you'll be roleplay fined and embargoed.
It's probably best to think of the General Assembly as a minigame that intersects a little bit with other parts of the game, but not very much.
The other part of the World Assembly is the Security Council, which can do 3 things - commend, condemn and libertate. Commendations and condemnations are simply badges, valued by many people but with no actual in-game effect. Liberating a region prevents a password being imposed to stop nations entering it, which can be significant in terms of raiding/defending gameplay.
My own longstanding gripe about the General Assembly has been the number of resolutions that tacitly assume that all nations work like a liberal democracy and have the sort of civic institutions that we take for granted in the real life countries most of us live in. For flavour, here's a roleplay post I wrote last year when I resigned Uan aa Boa from the World Assembly in order to use my membership for another project.
The tropical communist nation has confirmed that its recent suspension of membership is to become permanent. Speaking to the country's quarterly parliament, ageing leader Jean Baptiste Mazemba denounced what he called "a creeping liberal hegemony" and condemned WA overreach, claiming the international legislature had grossly exceeded its mandate on international issues and was interfering in the domestic affairs of member states.
Uan aa Boa has been a long-standing and active WA member, proposing resolutions on 3 occasions and contributing to the drafting and promotion of several other pieces of environmental legislation. The ruling Revolutionary Workers' Party has become increasingly unhappy with what it sees as the WA imposing legal processes on unwilling governments. The final straw is believed to be the soon to be passed resolution World Assembly Justice Accord, which creates an international court through which any organisation in a WA country will be able to prosecute any other organisation for breaching WA resolutions. Uan aa Boa has no formal legal system and, in many areas, no codified laws. Disputes and crimes are dealt with by local communes holding public votes. Party officials have concluded there is no feasible way of implementing the new rules without an overhaul of Boani society they are unwilling to accept.
Uan aa Boa's delegation has previously criticised resolutions such as Freedom to Contract which call on governments to create a way of enforcing private contracts made between citizens, something incompatible with their Marxist-Leninist command economy. A legal tribunal had been created to make Uan aa Boa technically compliant, housed in a broom cupboard in the basement of the Revolutionary Workers' Council for the Interior, but it is doubtful whether it has ever dealt with any cases.
A key obstacle is that Boani society lacks the concept of legal personhood, the system whereby companies and other organisations are able to own property, enter into contracts and hold other legal rights and responsibilities. In a country that forbids private enterprise and does not recognise the ownership of property it is difficult to say what legal personhood would mean, and Party theorists are critical of the concept because of its historical origins in allowing merchant voyages and other venture capitalist projects to fail without their financial backers becoming liable for their debts. In a country once badly affected by the slave trade it is seen as irredeemably colonial. Yet without this legal device it is hard to see how an organisation within Uan aa Boa could be made the subject of criminal charges.
Uan aa Boa's lack of detailed laws has been strongly criticised by human rights groups for failing to protect citizens against the whims of an authoritarian government whose elderly dictator is famously hot tempered. There have been no democratic elections since Mazemba seized power at the end of a bloody civil war, and he is noted for having abolished his own previous parliament and replaced it with one whose members are chosen randomly by lot - a move billed as preventing corruption but widely interpreted as a power grab.
Mazemba has long been hostile to the concept of human rights, which he has described as a fetishising of the ability to choose badly and an attempt to pretend that citizens do not exist within a framework of reciprocal community relations. In his speech this week he accused the WA of imposing liberal institutions on the whole world. "We shall see that another solution is possible," he said, quoting post-colonial theorist Frantz Fanon. "It requires the restructuring of the world."
Commentators have also noted that since Uan aa Boa's temporary withdrawal its armed forces have been involved in several military operations with the left wing alliance know as the Red Fleet. Although the Fleet has previously been commended by the Security Council these operations are not technically compatible with full WA membership.

i see this as a perfect opportunity to shamelessly advertise for people to endorse my own nation
it gives you plenty of amenities like–getting an endorsement back, although i seem to have endorsed everyone in the spirit of endotarting already... at least you can have my goodwill, even though i'm above 30 :)
not to detract from The new sicilian state of course, which i have already endorsed, and the fantastic efforts of ur to sponsor the less priviledgedly endorsed in the community ^_^
