itíd likely clog its air intakes by tearing up any terrain it was travelling on. For comparison the F-35 has a maximum takeoff weight of 27 tons, and thatís using a jet engine.

Iíd say stick with a single lighter MBT, but have it modular so you can retrofit it for different missions, reducing logistical issues. Iíd also suggest an alternative hovertech like antigravity, no one can poke holes in fictional tech!

Tripartite Empire wrote:Hover tanks have always been a weird concept for me. Iíve always thought that simply getting hit would send them flying over the place since theyíre not firmly planted in the ground. I understand that they might have greater mobility.

Am I missing something?

Basically youíre right, hovertanks are a rule of cool. However itís hard to say how severe the lack of ground friction would be, since sheer mass would still keep it somewhat stable. Also fictional tech, so whoís to stop you putting in some sort of lockdown tech that keeps the tank steady when firing, and mobile enough to doge incoming rounds.

I got the inspration after reading Hammer's Slammers.

True. I might be imagining this wrong, but lockdown tech, wouldnít it be counter intuitive to a vehicle with an emphasis on mobility? Iím thinking of something that stops the tank every time it has to fire. I feel that would put it at an disadvantage. Unless it works by allowing it to still move while firing?

The ideal hovertank I can think of...

A lightly armored vehicle to maintain high mobility while employing an energy shield of some sort to absorb incoming fire. The shield will take the place of the armor, maybe something like a bubble like shield to avoid getting thrown off by incoming fire. Have the lockdown system, preferably one where the vehicle can still move. In addition have it so I can also carry troops so infantry can get deploy to their objectives swiftly. Something similar to the Merkava.

But also thinking of what you said. A modular vehicle that can fulfil a multitude of different roles. So having additional stuff that can fit on it.

Hmmm never heard of it. Must check out.

Perhaps a recoil compensator would be a more accurate phrase, since hovering would allow movement in any direction, that same system would be able to move in the opposite direction of the recoil, keeping the tank steady.

In addition to your idea, a light tank would still require armour, just not the heave MBT stuff. I think a team in Japan have some sort of new magnesium alloy armour thatís super light and strong. Or just go with graphene, itís the new nanotechnology.

Or go with something scifi like durasteel or unobtainium...

Okay that makes sense.

Need to look into the Japanese one. Although Iíve heard of graphene being thought of as a new material for body armor. Doesnít it only come into thin sheets though? So multiple layers would have to be used for vehicles?

Purple Empire wrote:Or go with something scifi like durasteel or unobtainium...

Those could work, however would prefer to see something thought up of. Although necrodermis armor would be interesting.

Californian, not Japanese. Whoops.

And yeah, atom thin sheets, but since layered armour is superior itís just another advantage.
