That's what I thought.... Wow New flag, but I'm guessing it's the rotation of the Zombie Apocalypse roll of honour.

🇱🇦 Introducing our second annual regional flag contest. Interested parties should send me a link by TG or post your link on the RMB. Submission is due by December 15th. Please give your flag a title of two words or less to make it easier to list in the poll. I'll try to put all the entries in a dispatch and we'll vote on them by a poll which will end December 20th. The winner's flag will fly through Epiphany. Then, each of the other entries will fly for 10 days, after which the winning design will be the regional flag for the rest of the year.

I am not entering. Any nation submitting an entry will receive a gif card. In addition, the winner will get either its card as a prize or, if preferred, another one from a list that I'll compile. 🇱🇦

Entrants, in case such a thing matters to you, here is something for checking if your design would be recognizable when flown:

https://krikienoid.github.io/flagwaver/

Symbols are most discernible at the inner top corner (called the "canton") and in the center (the "device") where flags wave the least and they are at their best when few and memorable. Any text whatsoever is sure to be illegible, so probably avoid it. The Christmas Colors, which bears my nation's entire intricate seal, violates pretty much all these principles.

Of course, nationstates flags aren't really constrained by having to be printed and flown in the wind, etc., so you could say they ought to be so much more... an animation such as we had, for instance...

A relevant passage from one of my favorite books, The Fountainhead:

[Referring to the Parthenon] "The famous flutings on the famous columns — what are they there for? To hide the joints in wood — when columns were made of wood, only these aren’t, they’re marble. The triglyphs, what are they? Wood. Wooden beams, the way they had to be laid when people began to build wooden shacks. Your Greeks took marble and they made copies of their wooden structures out of it, because others had done it that way. Then your masters of the Renaissance came along and made copies in plaster of copies in marble of copies in wood. Now here we are, making copies in steel and concrete of copies in plaster of copies in marble of copies in wood. Why?"

Anyway, good luck to you all.

The flagwaver site is very entertaining; took advantage of it to look at several flags and was surprised at how flags look in motion against a sky. Made me realize light blue is not the best background color. lol

As for Rand's comment, " . . .copies in steel and concrete . . . " is that really true any more? Norman Foster? Santiago Calatrava? Zaha Hadid?

Certainly not of everyone. Even at time of writing (1930s) I'm sure there were those who weren't overly concerned with convention (though I'm no student of the topic). But protagonist's complaint doesn't concern those who already follow their own truth and build accordingly.

Had a quick try with the flag waver, can't seem to make it work with a file when you select the file the 'go' button disappears might try a url later?

I selected File, search icon, selected the file on my computer, clicked the Open button on the bottom of the File Upload window. It worked with .jpg and .png flags. I didn't see a "Go" button.

Perhaps it's my old tablet I can select a file and upload it but I don't have an open button just a file icon that just asks me to select again round in circles, don't know what I'm doing wrong but don't worry.

Yes, the tablet looks different. On my kindlefire8 I had to press and hold on the image file until a check in a circle appeared, then tap the word, "Done " that appeared in the upper right of the screen, click the file folder icon on the flagwaver screen and repeat. IOW, I had to go through the whole cycle twice.

Hi, I received this message from The Ice Bears:

I wondered if you would like to have Arctic participate in your flag competition? I completely understand if it's just for your own region. If Arctic submitted entries I would anticipate you would only get one or two entries (perhaps none) as we are in a very quiet time here but it might make the chance of a little activity. If yes, I or you could post the details on our board, I look forward to your reply.

So how do y'all feel about this? My thoughts are that they can participate for the .gif reward to entrants but that the winning regional flag will have to be the creation of a nation resident in The Arctic, even if it is an ambassador. You can respond by TG if you prefer.

OK, since I didn't see any objections, I'm inviting Arctic to participate in our flag contest.

Bilabao, may I call for a poll? Of these two contenders for our official map projection, I'd like to know which most prefer.

First is very close to what we're used to: an azimuthal (perspective) map centered on 90°N. This flavor of azimuth, the orthographic projection, is centuries old and still preferred among its kind for its balanced distortion of distance and area. Don't mind the hairy edge in my sample image; I'll get to that:

https://puu.sh/GYYzT/ae53156e0e.png

Second is the top hemisphere of a rolled out cylinder not dissimilar to the world famous Mercator projection. This type is exceedingly true to our relative distances though, obviously, there's some massive distortion of area near the poles. (Indeed it makes The Merry Christmas appear by far the greatest in all the world!) A printable and portable classic. And, were it lined out, potentially quite useful for old-style maritime trade.

Thanks, everyone. Whichever we go with, the map is set to roll out at the top of next year. As are monthly reports on the history of cartography wherein we'll look at each of the many curious ways in which man has taken to charting a great sphere in two dimensions.

Update: Apologies to the Great Leader, Jong un, whose holdings were partially grayed out in the making of these drafts. The fault is entirely my own. No offense was intended by this. Please find enclosed one ticket redeemable for 75% off next total purchase at any Christmas Town Arctic Apparel.
