Neutral (and canon) ending: Despite losing it's western territory, Sminishija makes up it's losses from conquering Kurikian lands of Smin ethnicity. Today East Sminishija is a fairly developed country with a direct democratic system.

Good ending: Sminishija is completely reunified and owns everything that they think is theirs. They have also become what they always wanted to be, the shining beacon of Yastrean liberty and socialist solidarity.

Bad ending: Chaos reigns, the 1920's revolution fails, and the country is forever divided upon ethnicity, religion and power.

Kampfian ending: Sminishija is never transferred to Ostaria, and is thus fully assimilated to Kampfian culture, regardless of ethnicity.

Ostarian ending: Sminishija never gains independence. However, they are granted greater autonomy and thus their culture survives. Sminishija is further united under a multi-party constitutional duchy.

Trostukai faith ending: It is unknown if the country has fallen to Kampfians or not in the 16th century, but today they have a Kriosaivak religion as majority.

Halal ending: Probanii Islam in Sminishija is never eradicated, and thus proceed to launch a religious revolution against the oppressive secular Socialist government, overthrowing them and establishing the Islamic Republic of Rijekia. Artillery is the most used weapon.

Brethren wrote:Letwin listens to all this with a strange expression on his face, making only such sparse and simple notes as the story seems to require. It's . . . simpler, he thinks, than the stories told on the open steppe. Perhaps it's a side effect of Vórgetsk's translation, or of the simpler and less abstract way the woodfolk tend to speak in general. Either way, it's not very -- wait a second. The forest is angry because people left? Then why does it spend all its energy now on driving out those people's descendants (and one stranger with a dog)? And if it wanted to keep the woodfolk in the first place, why do they now also fall victim to its hate?

Much scribbling follows this line of thought -- so much scribbling, in fact, that Letwin is caught rather off guard when it's his turn to offer a story. So he tells the first one to jump into his head. Just why this specific story is in his head, and why it feels so natural to tell it now . . . he doesn’t question.

Iaoth’s conquest ushered in a golden age. Within the circle of her arms, all could be safe, for she is as loving as the demon lords are vile. All were fed, for she was sustenance; winter never came, and plants never withered, for her heart was as warm as the sun. And while the demons hated her for upending their will, they could do nothing to stop it; not one of them could survive her glory, as a single drop of water vanishes before the blue heart of the fire. Our Motherland was too bright, and too lovely, for the creatures of darkness to stand.

But while Iaoth’s power is great, and blinding, it is not inexhaustible – and where the raindrop fails, the flood may yet succeed.

So it went. The demon lords gathered their armies, every servant and ally they had, and by sheer numbers they beat Iaoth down. She fell unconscious, as a mortal might after a hard blow to the head, and for a time her children were effectively alone. This is a story from that time -- of a village called Allye, and how its people survived against the worst of all demons: the razvra.

Allye was safe from every form of demon they knew. They had erected sturdy walls around their village when the cataclysm began, and with regular repairs those walls kept out even the reapers. But the razvra were not stopped by walls; they spread as a contagion in the soil, invisible, creeping under and around all barriers. The villagers’ crops took in this contagion through their roots, and showed no sign, so entire families cooked and swallowed poison without knowing what they did. The poison worked slowly, warping the minds of its victims bit by bit; it led them down the road to madness, but each step along the way was small enough to go unnoticed. So they spiralled down, and down, until their madness reached its final stage: the stage at which all those afflicted developed an overwhelming hunger for human flesh. But this was not what it seemed --

It’s at this point that Letwin stops cold, like some invisible force has slapped him across the face and screamed that he has to shut up. “. . . um. A-anyway, while the initial wave of demons had beaten Iaoth into unconsciousness, they had not succeeded so well against Anauel. Of all the Powers of Elysium, Anauel is the least able to protect their chosen mortals -- but there was one gift still within their power to give . . .”

Allye had been built up around an abundant freshwater spring; almost all their water was derived from this source, and the soil around it was oddly resistant to the razvra’s advance. Those who lived and farmed closest to the spring, therefore, were spared the worst effects of the madness. Anauel saw in them the opportunity to save every soul within the village walls.

Overnight, the spring became more than water and protection. It became the gift of Sight -- a Sight humans were never meant to have, but one that saved them nonetheless. At first, they thought they had succumbed to disease in much the same way as their peers; they saw things which were not there, screams echoed in their heads when no voice had been raised, and their eyes began to pour thick streams of blood. For days they lived in agony.

On the dawn of the fifth day, the people around the spring woke up to find themselves no longer bleeding and delusional. In fact, far from seeing what was not there, suddenly they could see what was. They looked at their afflicted friends and saw the razvra’s influence hiding beneath the skin; they looked to Anauel’s spring and saw a strange white light, a light reflected in their own veins and, faintly, in the veins of those who had succumbed to the razvra’s poison. Further, they looked throughout the forest, and they found the light in a variety of plants -- all growing around water sources and stone trees, where the razvra had not been able to fully overtake the soil. They gathered up as many of these plants as they could, and mixed them with the waters of the spring; the resulting potion shone bright, painfully bright in their newly adjusted eyes. Seeing this, they drank it down and fed it also to their afflicted counterparts . . . and, throughout the coming weeks, they watched the razvra’s essence burn away. Their friends and family returned to them scarred, but no longer controlled -- and there was no doubt that the madness had gone, for they could see its absence.

Together, the people of Allye brewed enough purification draught to cleanse their homes and fields. They lived through the rest of the cataclysm in this manner, driving out the influence of the razvra time and time again.

When Iaoth woke again, and drove the demons once more out of her domain, the gift of Sight became unnecessary. Still it remains in the descendants of the village of Allye.

Vórgetsk translates the story faithfully into the tongue of the woodfolk, stumbling only twice: the name of the demon-corruption, which only constitutes a momentary delay, and the concept of the Sight, a problem that requires some more thought. Eventually he settles for something closer to "hearing," after a second or two of apparent concern that the term would engender misunderstanding.

Martis, meanwhile, having already heard the tale in his previous acquaintance with Letwin, forgoes his usual note taking in favor of paying more attention to the story itself. He's not sure what, but something seems appropriate about it. He pulls out his journal and turns to his previous notes about it, poring over them for the latter half of the story. By the end, he's quietly muttering to himself and turning back and forth between two specific pages.

Vorgas spends the entire time perfectly enchanted. His hackles rise at the mention of the corrupting razvra; he is relieved when the townsfolk are able to purge the infection; the end of the cataclysm comes as a refreshing rain. When the end of the story is apparent, he jumps from his seat (much to the consternation of the not-quite-oblivious Martis next to him) and shouts. "Bravetsi!"

A couple of the woodfolk glance at each other and repeat the term, rolling its unfamiliar sounds around their mouths before quieting down as Vorgas strolls to Letwin's side. "Now I believe it is my turn, friend. You have given this folk a tale of your people; they have given us a tale of theirs; it is only right that they should have one of ours. We shall let them have a song!"
