Apparently several books in a secondhand bookstore in my city came from the UK. I even got a copy of The Beano Book out of curiosity.

Regarding the current GA resolution at vote:

Drystar wrote:So, another resolution is currently up for vote in the GA. While I find issue with some of the provisions in the resolution, it truly doesn’t affect the Dominion greatly. So I’m undecided how to vote. Had to put that in there before Lily pad nation jumped on me about it. Criminals in Drystar do time in penal legions rather then jail, depending on the severity of their crimes, but I don’t like the clause telling member states to seize private property using eminent domain, one of my least favorite rl actions.

Roavin wrote:Aye, I'm undecided as well. The eminent domain portion is merely a recommendation rather than a requirement, so that can be "overlooked". What bugs me a bit is that while operative clauses 2 and 3 seem to imply that a government operated prison with the facilities being rented from private entities would be acceptable (and I don't see not), clauses 4 and 7 imply that this wouldn't be enough and that the government has to own the property.

I asked the resolution's author, and they said: "As long as the government or a municipal corporation maintains ultimate ownership and operational control over a prison, it may lease discrete services in the prison to private entities -- e.g., Food Inc. runs the prison's cafeteria, Utilities Inc. provides water and electricity to the prison, and Laundry Inc. owns and operates the prison's washing and drying machines."

Obviously this person doesn’t know how prison actually works. Plus I don’t see what difference it would make if a private entity owns the physical buildings, if they don’t actually operate the facilities. The government leases office buildings by the score to house agencies, doesn’t seem to affect performance in the least. Guess that’ll be a no vote from me

My nation doesn't employ prisons, instead having a large health care/rehabilitation regime/massive nanny state, so the resolution doesn't really affect me, however, since I'm trying to have this nation be a "Corporations are people, my friend" kind of place, I voted against it as an unreasonable restriction on commerce.

Besides, if the prision can be nationally owned but contract out all the jobs within it to private companies, what is even the point of saying it's not a "private" prision?

Hey Voly, how are you?

Qvait wrote:What is the record combined vote total for a delegate election? Just asking for a friend.

As near as I can tell our highest Delegate vote turn out was Tsu vs Tim 1 year ago, with 212 votes cast (page=poll/p=124690)

This election looks like it could probably surpass that total if things stay this tight, (4 days in, 177 votes cast, with a 3 vote difference right now).

Viva democracy!

Wow that's a massive spending cut, I've only done a couple big spending cuts, but nothing on that scale. Ussually when the taxes get above 50% I start looking to cut spending... until then I never worry about it.

I suppose that you know how prisons wprk,my friend. I mean, after that money laundering scheme, you were ready given a proper ticking off by the police.

And why, did you operate a laundromat to follow through with your scheme? Duh. So obvious.

Heh, nothing was ever proven.

But to be honest, several of my family have done “time”, so I’ve had some experience with that part of society.
