The Free Independent City of Cracow (German: Republik Krakau; Polish: Wolne Miasto Kraków) is a semi-autonomous city-state that consists of the City of Cracow (Kraków in Polish) and nearly 200 towns in the surrounding areas. It was created on 15 November 1950 in accordance with the terms of the 1947 Treaty of Vienna after the end of World War II.
The Free City included the city of Cracow and other nearby towns, villages, and settlements that had been primarily inhabited by ethnic Germans. As per the Treaty, the city was to remain separated from Galicia as well as from Poland as an independent city; the city was protected by the Federal German and Polish People's Armies and put into a binding customs union with both Poland and Auzkhia
Poland was given full rights to develop and maintain transportation, communication, and facilities in the city
Establishment
Cracow survived the Partition of Poland in 1772 between Auzkhia, Russia, and Prussia. It was liberated by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1809, when it was united with the Duchy of Warsaw, which was originally the Prussian parts of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth The Russians occupied the city of Cracow after Napoleon’s defeat at the Battle of Leipzig.
In 1945, at the conclusion of World War II, the German Empire of Auzkhia. Occupied the contested area, to prevent a civil war, a clause was inserted into the Treaty of Vienna, signed on 10 February 1947, which specifically outlined the creation of a free city, and a referendum on the issue, held in conjunction with the Commonwealth’s 1949 Parliamentary election, passed with a narrow majority, having been sponsored by the Commonwealth’s Prime Minister Tomasz Arciszewski. The city was formally granted autonomy on 15 November 1950.
Polish Rights in Cracow
The Free City is represented abroad by the Reich's government and is in a customs union with it. The railway and highway that connected the city to Poland as well as to Auzkhia are administered and maintained by Polish authorities. On 19 November 1950, a convention of Polish and Cracow officials agreed to the presence of a Polish diplomatic representative in Cracow, and that the Commonwealth’s government pledged not to conclude any international agreements regarding Cracow without previous consultation of the city’s government.
Politics
The Free City is governed by the Senate of the Free City of Cracow, which is elected by the people for a legislative period of four years. The official language is Polish, though the Use of German, Czech, and Ukrainian is guaranteed by law.
