    Zoroastrians, Mandaeans, Celebrate Festivities

Yesterday the Zoroastrian community celebrated one of their festivities, the Jashne of Amordad, which celebrates the Zoroastrian mythical creation of plants. The Jashne of Amordad is the Zoroastrian seasonal celebration that takes place in the Summer. Official government numbers put the estimate of Zoroastrians in Iraq at 200000 (about 0.4% of the population), most of whom are new converts as the Kurdistan region has seen an interesting number of Kurds convert to the ancient Persian faith.

Mandaeans, another minor faith practiced by some in Iraq, will celebrate Nauruz Zota (or Little New Year) tomorrow. Nauruz Zota is the 6th day of the Mandaean New Year, and on the night between and 6th and 7th days, Mandaeans believe that truly pious people will have a vision. In this vision, they will witness the Gates of Abathur open and they may get whatever they want, but pious people will ask for spiritual gifts rather than material items. Additionally, on that night, fires are extinguished and Mandaeans give nourishments to the poor. Mandaean priests will bless houses by placing wreaths on every lintel in order to protect families for the year.

Kariyushi Club goes National / LDP devolves into further chaos

After the snap election was called by Prime Minister Shinzō Abe, he had expected for the members of the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan to begin reconciling via their consensus on Abe's handling of COVID-19. However, much to his surprise & chagrin. The LDP has only further devolved into chaos as some members disagreed with how Abe handled it. Pointing to the budget that was passed a while ago which centered around economic initiatives and loans to turn around Japan's economic slump. In addition, some members criticized Abe's foreign policy contradiction in recent times. Viewing his recent actions that have brought Japan more in line with China as contradictory to his more right-wing & nationalistic rhetoric he had spouted previously.

To make matters worse, while all of this occurred. The Kariyushi Club, previously a small party which advocated for the independence of the Okinawa Islands, was taken over by the Left in Japan. Intense negotiations followed & eventually, several independents & even former Democratic Party members flocked in droves to the alliance. One individual, Natsuki Subaru, is believed to be the reason behind this. Described as very charismatic & politically cunning. He was named as the Prime Minister ticket for the Kariyushi Club. Even figures like Katsuya Okada & Yoshihiko Noda were convinced to support Subaru in his bid for Japan.

Further irritating Abe, the N-Koku led by Takashi Tachibana has used his platform to continue to take shots at Abe & the LDP. Classical Tachibana simply swooping in to meme on Abe.

All of this would culminate in rumors leaking that Abe was considering resignation. Although no credible evidence was found to substantiate such rumors, Abe himself remained silent on the possibility. Many taking this as a sign that they held some hint of truth. A resignation during such a critical time could see the LDP become ever more weakened, & continue to pave the way for the possible victory of the Kariyushi Club. An outcome which would only be rivaled by the 2009 election in which the LDP had lost their grip of control for the first time in Japanese history.

What would any of this hold for Japan? How would voters lean? All of this would be on the minds of the Japanese people as the political scene continues to shift. Although a victory by the Kariyushi Club, heavily influenced by the Left, could see a radical transformation of Japan politically. Especially at a time when the Nationalist shadow of Japan has seen it's historical popularity (due to the alternate events in this TL) begin to decrease.

ENA - Emirate News Agency - Dubai
Emerati Investors
July 26th, 2020

The UAE has invested in many countries on every continent, from their large presence in the Horn of Africa to the $50bn that they have invested in the development of rural India. The UAE, either as private citizens or the government themselves, they are set on helping nations around the world with developing their nations.

Recently in Central America, the richest company in the UAE, Abu Dhabi first bank, has bought the rights to a football stadium in the city of Port-au-Prince. The stadium will seat up to 45k people and will be built to accommodate local transport and cars in the parking lot. The stadium will also contain luxury suite seats with air conditioning, minibars, and other high-end options.

The Abu Dhabi first bank has contracted local Dubai construction firm Al Futtain to construct the stadium. They will hire locals as well as sub-contract to local Haitian firms to help in the construction of the stadium. The expected cost for the stadium is $200 million and construction will start mid-August.

The Foreign Minister of the UAE, Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has announced $45 million dollars of investment into the Tajikistani healthcare system, which only accounted for 1% of their GDP. This money will be put forth to by necessary medical supplies needed to run proper medical facilities.

The UAE government will also expedite the process of obtaining work visas for the Tajikistani people, as almost 45% of the Tajikistani GDP is from remittances. The government will also encourage the hiring of Tajikistanis in state-owned businesses.

The Corruption Stronghold on The Republic

PARIS— France is not a particularly corrupt country, in global terms, but in the West it is something of an outlier. According to Transparency International’s 2016 “corruption perception” index, France ranked 23rd among 176 nations, just behind Estonia and just ahead of the Bahamas. It is not, of course, Somalia or Syria. But neither is it Denmark, New Zealand, Canada, or even the United States. In Western Europe, it outranks only Portugal, Italy, and Spain. What may make matters worse is that French corruption is particularly high-profile: It doesn’t come in the form of cops asking for petty bribes, or companies buying off bureaucrats. Rather, thanks to the peculiarly French principle of a republican monarchy, French corruption involves vast sums and takes place at the highest levels of government. Created by De Gaulle in 1958, the Fifth Republic hands vast power and prestige to the presidency. The president, in principle, is not answerable to Parliament; the president, in essence, reigns and his ministers merely rule. While De Gaulle also endowed the office with his personal imperviousness and incorruptibility, his descendants have held tight to the former while mostly trashing the latter. From the late 1970s, when Central African Republic Emperor Jean-Bedel Bokassa showered Valéry Giscard d’Estaing with diamonds, through the 1980s, when Chirac, while mayor of Paris, embezzled public funds for his presidential campaign, to Sarkozy and the kaleidoscope of court cases confronting him, ranging from influence peddling to accepting $54 million in campaign financing from former Libyan dictator Muammar al-Qaddafi, the French presidency has been consistently mired in scandals worthy of the Bourbons. (François Hollande, for all his fecklessness, has — to give credit where it’s due — kept his hands relatively clean during his time in office; his scandals have been of the personal sort.)

This relentless drip of scandals both dampens public attitudes toward the mainstream parties — a Transparency International poll taken late last year revealed that three-quarters of the French believe that parliamentary deputies and government ministers are corrupt — and continues to raise the boat of the far-right National Rally. Marine Le Pen’s party has its own instances of financial misbehavior: The European Union had determined that the National Rally defrauded the European Parliament budget of more than €324,000, which it used to illicitly pay FN staffers. Perhaps because the victim was Brussels, however, and because Le Pen was not enriching herself personally, the scandal has had little traction in France; this week, while Fillon was busy battling for his political life, Le Pen was scoffing at the notion that she might return the funds. More to the point, it hasn’t stopped Le Pen from positioning herself as the only candidate able to drain the French swamp. Given the steady 25 to 26 percent support her party attracts in polls, a sizable group, it seems, believes her. The reluctance of French governments to address the problem of corruption is well known. In 2014, a European Union report rapped France’s knuckles for its faulty firewalls in campaign financing, its judiciary’s relative lack of independence, and the absence of political willpower to tackle a culture of corruption. Until recently, moreover, the foot-dragging of politicians over these issues has not unduly bothered French voters. As Jean-Christophe Picard of the watchdog group Anticor notes, through the 1980s and 1990s the public mostly tolerated such wheeling and dealing. “In France, there is the idea that defrauding and wasting public money is not too serious a problem as long as there are no direct victims,” he said in a recent interview with the weekly French magazine L’Obs. There have been some recent attempts to remedy the problem: Last year, the country enacted the Sapin II Law, which, for the first time, creates an anti-corruption agency, requires members of Parliament to render public the names of everyone listed on their official payrolls, and affords fuller legal protection to lanceurs d’alerte, the rather awkward French term for whistleblowers. The law has been hailed as an important step by transparency advocacy groups, but much of the law is aimed at targets lower down than the Élysée. François Fillon, the former prime minister, was found guilty on last month of embezzling public funds and sentenced to prison time in a scandal involving a no-show job for his wife that crippled his front-runner status in the 2017 presidential race and led to a broader resentment of France’s political elite. Mr. Fillon, who was prime minister from 2007 to 2012, was accused mainly of paying his wife hundreds of thousands of euros from the public payroll for little or no work as his aide when he served as a representative in the National Assembly. Mr. Fillon was sentenced by a court in Paris to a five-year prison term, with three years suspended, and was ordered to pay a fine of 375,000 euros, or nearly $423,000. The court also barred him from holding public office for 10 years. Mr. Fillon’s wife, Penelope Fillon, 64, was found guilty of complicity and received a three-year suspended prison term and a fine of €375,000. With new restrictions in place, and government corruption crackdown is gaining more traction among the people, the upcoming 2022 elections ought to finally bring the corruption debate among high level politicians to the national spotlight.

What came out of the annual EU Council summit in Nice?

This year's annual summit of the EU Council in Nice, France, gathered all the leaders of the EU member states to discuss important issues of the EU future in the upcoming period. Together with them, leaders of the UK and Turkey were also present, as guests with no voting right on the matters, but still with right to participate in discussions as equals. Summit started on July 20th and lasted for four days, covering numerous subjects.

When it comes to relations with guests, EU Council has agreed with the UK that London will remain in Europol Joint Data Register (EJDR), allowing the UK to continue participating in EU-wide efforts for fighting against organized crime and terrorism. Also, EU Council has passed a motion allowing 90 days long stay for Turkish citizens in the Schengen area with no visa required. Same will apply for EU citizens in Turkey. EU has also agreed to pay Turkey €9 billions, for further protection of the border from potential flow of illegal migration.

In warm and friendly discussion, which also involved numerous bilateral meetings between state leaders on the margins of summit, EU leaders have also agreed further cooperation among the EU members on subject of security, while preserving the current direction of the foreign policy towards most important global powers. When it comes to the key EU projects, it has been agreed that the EuroCorp should be made significantly stronger and with expanded responsibilities, and that all economies should focus on passing more eco-friendly policies in the post-corona period.

EU Council President Nataša Vučković has stated:

"I am pleased with the productive results on annual summit that has successfully finished. European Union has taken steps to ensure that all the good traditions of period behind us are well-preserved, while new initiatives are encouraged and grounded. It is nothing new that we're living in tough period of numerous crises and concerns both within the EU and around us, but I am generally optimistic that if we preserve our current direction while working on raising our productivity and efficiency in the upcoming period, we will be able to maintain our democracy, our values and our way of life."

News from the United States

U.S. Space Capabilities: The Evolving Frontier

With the formation of the Space Force as an independent branch in December 20th, 2019. Space returned to the minds of Americans all over the country. Would America continue its dominance into the far-reaching galaxy? Well it would seem Elon Musk hasn't gotten the U.S. to Mars yet but the U.S. Military has continued to utilize space as a new area of dominance. This comes at a time when America continues to make progress on the SBIRS GEO-5 & GEO-6. The SBIRS GEO Flight-4, launched around mid-2018, has several capabilities which allow the U.S. to retain a dominant presence within the new frontier:

"Equipped with powerful scanning and staring infrared surveillance sensors, the satellite collects data for use by the U.S. military to detect missile launches, support ballistic missile defense, expand technical intelligence gathering and bolster situational awareness on the battlefield."

This is only further bolstered by the fact that the Pentagon has been considering the role of AI in warfare as the U.S. moves forward. All of this culminates in the far-reaching technological capabilities of the U.S. today. But aside from all the talk of the military. The U.S. has considered the environmental potential of Space. As the U.S. puts effort into it's Defense Support Program's infrared sensors as part of an early warning system for natural disasters.

As the United States moves forward in all of it's glory. It will continue to expand & dominate the galaxy which God gifted it.

Although America may be focusing some attention on Space. Much of the Military still remains centered on Earth. The U.S. Military continues to move forward with its ever-expanding anti-missile capabilities in 2020 to rival those of China & Russia. This can be seen within the unveiling of the LRDR or Long Range Discrimination Radar. A Radar based in Alaska which was developed by Lockheed Martin for hundreds of millions of dollars.

Sources have described the radar as, "a Gallium Nitride (GaN)-based, solid-state Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) early-warning radar, that allows for continuous coverage, even when it is undergoing maintenance. The radar consists of individual solid state radar blocks that can be combined to scale up the size of the radar." The radar is believed to be a part of the greater U.S. Ground-Based Midcourse Defense anti-ballistic missile system.

Now, this may look cool. But America doesn't stop at one. Another system that is being developed is the MEADS or Medium Extended Air Defense System. A system which the U.S. is looking to use to replace it's aging Patriot Missile System. The system is believed to be a major stepping stone in further bolstering U.S. security in conjunction with NATO allies. But, think this is enough? Of course not!

Next we look at the AN/TPS-80 Ground/Air Task Oriented Radar. A radar that is in active service with the U.S. Marine Corps. This radar is marketed as having the following:

"This multi-mission air surveillance system can detect, identify and track airborne threats common to combat environments. These include cruise missiles, aircraft and remotely piloted vehicles, as well as rocket, artillery and mortar fire.

The long-range, high-performance AN/TPS-80 replaces five of the Marine Corps' single-mission radars with one multi-mission system, reducing cost and complexity while streamlining training. It consolidates the air surveillance, air defense and counterfire target acquisition missions of the AN/TPQ-46, UPS-3, AN/TPS-63, AN/MPQ-62 and AN/TPS-73 into one package with radar, power and communications elements."

All of this simply serves to illustrate the technological edge the United States continues to pursue over it's competitors in 2020. Whether it be space or the ground. The United States is not an adversary to take lightly.

Central America: The Hispanic Partner

Although the U.S. has had a tumultuous relationship with the Hispanic Nations in the Americas. One Nation which continues to be a source of steady friendship & support is Central America. The Nation which encompasses much of the Caribbean & as the namesake suggests, Central America, is a key U.S. Partner.

A hallmark of the relationship between America & Central America is the U.S. Foreign Aid Program to it's Hispanic Partner. The U.S. is believed to send approximately $1.5 billion annually to assist the country in any way, shape or form. In addition, Central America is believed to be a key partner with the U.S. Military.

The U.S. Jaguar Project, long believed to be dead, resurfaced in Central America. The tank is believed to be a good, albeit more outdated pick for the Central American Military. In addition, the Central American Military picked up 50 M1 Abrams of an older variant in 2016.

All of this illustrates the key relationship between the United States & Central America. A relationship which will only continue to be enhanced as the U.S. Navy is expected to conduct a naval exercise in the following weeks with the Central American Navy.

American involvement in Sahuria

NOTE: This information is considered Unknown information to the player base at large unless such information is released or disclosed to other players.
An operative from the highly secretive CIA Special Activities Division had been sent to the Hizb Al-Arz Christian Front. An organization which had been deemed to have the potential to be a critical U.S. Ally in the Middle East if the U.S. sufficiently supported them in their rightful fight for survival in Sahuria. The SAD was to open up communications between D.C. & the Christian Front in a manner that could allow the U.S. to maintain secrecy should the mission become compromised.

Goals for the mission would be:

  • Establish a diplomatic channel between Hizb Al-Arz & D.C.

  • Convey U.S. interests & gather the interests of the Hizb Al-Arz

  • Probe the idea of U.S. assistance for the faction

  • Probe the possibility of full American intervention on behalf of the faction

All of this would be conducted to ensure the United States maintained a secured relationship with the Christian faction. Secretary of Defense, Mad Dog Mattis believed that backing the Christians in Sahuria could pay off by increasing the amount of U.S. allies in the area. One which has seen an increasingly negative response to the U.S. presence there fueled mainly by the Iranian Regime.

President Trump warns against China withdrawing from the NPT

Zhen dynasty wrote:Zhen Dynasty Considers Withdraws from NPT

The Board of Rites, in June of 2020, had announced that it would be withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, following calls among hardline orators that the limits placed upon the country by this treaty make the Zhen’s nuclear deterrent ‘essentially useless’.

Currently, the Board of War maintains control of 290 warheads, with the cumulative TNT equivalent of its strategic arsenal being 294 MT. However, it pales in comparison to what other nuclear powers have - France has 280 warheads, the US has 3,800, India has 150, Russia with 6,800, and Pakistan 160. Cumulatively, the PA itself has over 7,000 nuclear warheads - however, with no plans for a nuclear umbrella in sight, and with a majority of the warheads located in Russia, the Zhen has found itself at a position where it is open for attack. To pose a larger deterrent, the Board of War has made plans to modernise and reactivate all 610 nuclear warheads the country has produced since 1964, and increase its arsenal to a size of 690 warheads if there are emergent threats to national security.

Upon the inauguration of the new National Assembly, the Board of War will make plans to vote the proposal through. If the Zhen’s withdrawal is ratified through domestic legislation, the Zhen will formally withdraw from the NPT in September. The government has expressed that “it would value input from credible sources on its next course of action”, hinting at the possibility that it could potentially reconsider its stance.

After the news broke about the Zhen expressing interest in reactivating hundreds of nukes & withdrawing from the NPT, President Trump warned against such an idea. He stated,

"The Chinese want to set off a nuclear race simply because they feel insecure? No. We won't stand for it. Simple. They said it themselves. Russia & China together have a larger number of nukes than the United States. Even Russia, alone, has more nukes. But you're telling me the Chinese need hundreds more? No. Simply no. We will not let the Chinese think they can act like North Korea."

After the announcement, several U.S. politicians came out to lambast the Chinese for their "reckless" comments or "belligerent" position. Even Democrats, typically ready to oppose Conservative rhetoric, were noticeably silent on the matter with some moderates breaking with the Party & joining Conservatives in condemning Zhen.

Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo urged the Zhen to abandon the idea in the interest of maintaining peace & stability.

The Chinese Lie

Recently, the Chinese have involved themselves in world affairs to a great extent. Intervening in the Burmese conflict, vetoing a U.S. authored U.N. resolution aimed at setting up a NATO peacekeeping mission within Burma for humanitarian purposes, having their own resolution to dissolve the U.N. Monusco Mission vetoed by the U.S., & more. However, many Americans still remember China as being the source of COVID-19. The COVID virus has continued to devastate America in both infection / death rates & economic impact. In addition, the virus has been the source behind the contentious decision to lockdown several American cities.

All of this has culminated in China being the top source of hatred amongst Americans in recent times. President Trump's anti-China platform has benefitted immensely from this anger. Many Americans rallying behind him just as they did in 2016 against China. On FOX, political commentator Tomi Lahren stated,

"The Chinese were the source of Corona. Quite literally, they are the reason why we are suffering so much right now. President Trump should intensify the trade war! Ridiculous. Besides, we have other people that deserve our business much more!"

Lahren would be backed up by noted Xenophobe Laura Ingraham who said,

"Of course the Far-Easterners give us a virus. Remind me where the Black Death originated from?"

Famous commentators Sean Hannity & Tucker Carlson added on to the conversation with,

S: "Chinese need to pay us in damages for this ridiculous virus. But they won't. They're too busy lining Democrat pockets with their fake currency."

T: "We were foolish enough to let them take us by surprise once. Never again! Lets strike back!"

But this was further exacerbated when, in a surprising move, Steven Crowder supported the opinions espoused by Fox,

"See, the Chinese have this misbegotten notion that they do no wrong. Which is naturally a farce. They invaded Myanmar under the pretext of punishing Myanmar for supposed human rights abuses. Where is the documentation of this? Please don't tell me they are using the U.N. as their source when they argued against the U.N. in Africa. Records on the Security Council meeting over the U.N. in Africa reveals that the Chinese accused the U.N. if being inefficient & corrupt in Africa. So which is it? Is the U.N. credible & efficient or are they corrupt? Please, I think the KGB were more credible than these people. Not to mention, weren't these the same people who took down an entire satellite in Burma? Yeah, that's totally helping the people.

Then they continue to claim that somehow they can take care of the average Burmese person. Are you kidding me? No they can't. How are the Chinese going to take care of them when they are literally engaging in space warfare? Get out of here! Don't even get me started on the plan these people have for the Burmese people when the war is over. But, in the midst of all of this. The Chinese want to take shots against us? For what? Deploying our brave troops to try & help the people? Not to mention, now the Communist Thais are intervening? Great. China & co are getting involved for their political interests. Please, accuse us of political wrongdoing when you aren't shrouded entirely in it!

Now hold on, why do the Chinese continue to make this assumption we are there to back the Burmese Government? We are taking on terrorists & ACTUALLY helping the average Burmese person. The Chinese stuck their fingers into Burma for their own political interests. But, of course, they ignore this to prop up anti-American sentiment. Ridiculous.

PLEASE! You want to point fingers? Why don't you clean your dirty hands first! Absolutely ridiculous. What credibility do they have to stand on when they invaded Burma? This is like us condemning their mission in the Congo. The Chinese are hypocrites. Change my mind."

Steven Crowder's fiery speech found much acclaim amongst his viewers. With his speech gaining a major following in days. While this transpired, the Asian American Commission came out to condemn the hateful statements promulgated by FOX & Crowder. Stating,

"Their hateful comments will only add to the vitriol going around now. In the aftermath of Floyd, I had hoped America had grown past such racist behavior."

The AAC disavowed any statements aimed at Asians whether they be Chinese or not. The AAC believed that the actions of the Chinese Government should not come to reflect the opinions or actions of the average Asian or Asian American. However, this did not receive much celebration. With many in the comments posting tags such as, "Century of Lies!" / "The Deceitful Dynasty of China!" / "Down with the Zhen!"

CNN: The Unseen Face of Myanmar

Anderson Cooper had travelled to Burma for the past couple of weeks to get a personal look into the conflict. Wishing to illustrate the impact of the war on the average Burmese person. He had gathered hours of footage & interviews with Burmese people to condense into a documentary with subtitles & or translators for viewers who were not fluent in the native Burmese dialect. Coopers experience in South East Asia coming in handy for the job.

The Documentary showcased Burmese refugees in areas which had seen heavy fighting. Whether it be between the Tatmadaw & Pattaya Alliance or the Tatmadaw with terrorists. The Burmese people on the ground had been disproportionately impacted by such events. Cooper classified them as refugees due to the fact that they had often been displaced from their homes & were looking to flee Burma for neighboring countries in the hopes of securing a sanction of safety. Despite efforts by the Pattaya Alliance to assist the people impacted, as some people told Cooper of Chinese soldiers bringing in food for certain refugees. Much of this fell short as the sheer amount of people impacted, & the rigorous terrain within Burma often made it far more difficult to get aid to people.

From the interviews, many people expressed a desire for the conflict to end. They told stories of the terrorists resurging in the aftermath of the Pattaya Alliance intervention. But what shattered Cooper was the stories of families suffering from the war. Cooper himself stated,

"I urge the Burmese Government & Pattaya Alliance to come to an agreement. These innocent people are suffering for the crimes of the suits in Government."

The documentary found many a victim to showcase the devastating face of the war. CNN International broadcasting it on American channels once received. CNNI also promoted the documentary several times on their social media.

Turkish-Korean military parade brings Seoul to standstill

SEUL– Since March the confidence of many Turks of its European allies has been the plummeting, and with Turkey being the sole savior of the Bosnian Republic in the Bosnia Crisis, after the failure of NATO and the EU to stop the radicalism government. After that event many in Turkey have renewed calls to withdraw from NATO's military structure, and embrace a new group of allies that will allow the Turkish Republic to put its interests first. What was seen in Seoul last weekend was described as a move toward that by many experts, with others arguing it simply was a just response from Turkey and Korea after the Northern Korea Occupier Administration attacked Korean diplomatic missions in Pyongyang.

Around 5 pm the long awaited military parade begin in Seoul, commemorating the the 70th Anniversary of Turkey accepting the call to enter the Korean War. This decision is considered by many today as to why the modern Turkish-Korean relationship has become so unbreakable, with Turkey sending the most troops after the United States to go fight in Korea. That being a total of 49,239 military personnel over the duration of the Korean War. Turkey also playing a vital process in the building process of the Korea's education system, with the 'Ankara School' system that it had built in Korea in 1953. The conflict saw 2,366 troops martyred, 5,258 wounded, 393 MIA, and 1,281 POWs. And to this day is the second bloodiest conflict that Turkey has fought in, the first being the War of Independence.

President Akşener and Korean Empress Geun-hye addressed the massive crowd that had gathered in the Korean capital from the Imperial Palace known as the Blue Palace. The speech came after the most the over 25,000 troops had marched pass the Blue Palace, with the parade coming to standstill for the leaders to speak. Both highlighting the importance of today for Turkey and Korea, as well as once again pledging support to one another in the face of today's challenges. Ranging on increasing Turkish-Korean cooperation in Bosnia, as well as hints being made at cooperation on fields such as Turkish intake of Sahuri refugees, and holding the rouge entity in Pyongyang accountable that has terrorize northern Korea.

The 'White Dove' President Bülent Ecevit

Bülent Ecevit rally ahead of the 1974 elections / Ulusal Arşiv

HISTORY – Born in 1925, Mustafa Bülent Ecevit came from a middle class family in İstanbul. After he had graduated from Robert College, an American school in the city, he went onto become a translator General Directorate for Press and Publication. He would go onto marry one of his classmates from Robert College, Rahşan. He would spend the rest of his years travelling Europe and the United States, however he would return to Turkey in the mid 1950s, being elected to the Grand National Assembly in 1957. It would take him up until 1972 to gain control of the CHP, two years later he would defeat President Atsız to become the 5th President of Turkey. The CHP's victory over the CKMP would also result in the total collapse of the CKMP.

The Ecevit Presidency had an especially rocky start with the government inheriting the embassy crisis from the previous Atsız government, though it had been solved. Turkey's standing in the region had been forever altered, with fears of an attack by the already humiliated Arabs from their previous war with Israel. The general instability of Sahuristan, and the rising of tensions between the Iraqi and Iranian governments in the 70s would all play massive factors to the construction of Turkey's border wall.

These moves, along with his governments launching of the Anatolian Peace Project that largely wiped the PKK's Turkey branch out, and the second and third Anatolian Peace Projects seen by Ecevit and Evren after him would create a very safe Turkey. Especially in comparison to its war torn neighbors of the era. The Eceveit Presidency today in Turkey is remembered by many as a government of compromise, with Ecevit actually never having the majority in the Grant National Assembly throughout his Presidency. Always ruling with coalition due to that factor.

It was his work in the late 80s that many also point out to why the Refah Party would begin its burn out phase, despite Refah going onto eventually win İstanbul during the 94 elections. The Ecevit Presidency would come to an end in 1990 when Kenan Evren's GTP (Strong Turkey Party) won the 1990 elections.

İstanbul 2020 set to shatter London and Rio records

OLYMPICS – It was at London 2012 and Rio 2016 respectively drew in an estimated audience of 3.6 billion, it is expected that İstanbul will begin to set the trend for global sporting events. Especially with the new given access to media in the post Covid reality. That the İstanbul 2020 Olympics can draw an audience anywhere from 3.5 billion up to 4 billion. This would make it the most watched event in history, if it is able to beat the previous estimated audience held by the Summer Olympics from the 2010s.

The Olympics so far have seen the expected teams do well, with the United States, Zhen, and the UK leading with the most medals. Followed by the Germans and Japanese who have also had a decent Olympics to this point. Middle Eastern countries, as well as Turkic Council members have seen overall better performance then past years.

Turkey itself has seen a good preference as well, with the homefield advantage definitely playing into the favor of the Turkish National Team throughout the Olympic games. Massive viewing party's have also been held around the country for those who could not travel to the Olympics in İstanbul to be able to watch the games with a group of fans, rather than at home. These projector events, largely set up by local governments in cooperation with TRT Sports has allowed for massive nationwide interest in the games.

Most recently the confirmed Men's Basketball final will be played between Turkey and the USA, which itself is set two pull in a massive audience. As basketballs two international giants look to take to the court once more.

Empress Geunhye calls Seoul mayoral by-election after death of Mayor Park Won-soon

A Buddhist monk pays his respects at a public memorial for late Seoul mayor Park Won-soon at Seoul National University Hospital / Chosun Ilbo

SEOUL– Following the funeral of the late Park Won-soon, Mayor of Seoul, and a top contender to become Yeonguijeong for the Evergreen Korea Party, Empress Geunhye has announced the details regarding the by-election to elect a successor to Park. The press conference began with a minute of silence to honor the late mayor's service to the country before the Empress addressed the press. The Empress announced that the by-election is to take place on the 28th of August, and the new mayor will be sworn in immediately. The Empress made the announcement shortly after returning from Mayor Park's funeral in the Blue Palace Press Room.

The Empress's announcement has parties announcing their candidates almost immediately after the news broke. The most high-profile candidate that has been announced at the time of this article was from the National Revolutionary Dividends Party. Almost immediately after the date was announced, the NRDP named Lee Myung-bak, the former Yeonguijeong from 2008-2013, as its candidate in the mayoral election. Lee, who was formerly affiliated with the Future Korea Party, left after a scandal occurred in which he was charged with bribery, embezzlement, and tax evasion in 2018. He was found not guilty of the charges but was not accepted back into Future Korea.

Yeonguijeong Tae Ku-min speaks to TRT World in rare out-of-country interview post-NATO Summit / TRT World

In a rare interview held outside the country, Yeonguijeong Tae Ku-min was asked by a Turkish reporter about the recent by-election call while still in Ankara. Tae, who was once rumored to be considering a run for the position himself, reiterated his stance that he would not run for the position, but said that his party would be fielding a candidate soon. In addition, he gave his sympathies to former Mayor Park's family, stating: "I truly cannot explain how shocked I am by Park Won-soon's death, and I hope he can rest in peace." It is rumored that Yıldız Haet-sal, the Minister of Unification, will be announcing her candidacy soon. Political scientist at Seoul University Jung Sang-hyun told KBS World that the list of potential candidates in the upcoming election is "long, but no short of interesting." This will be the second by-election in Seoul in less than a decade. The last one, held in 2013, was won by Park Won-soon after former mayor Oh Se-hoon resigned.

Siamese-Korean delegations meet; reach major arms deal

Ri Kyong-jin, Yonhap News

Korean trade delegates meet with Siamese government in Bangkok / Yonhap News

BANGKOK– The Imperial Korean Trade delegation, which has been in Seri sayam for the past few weeks, has announced that it has reached a major trade deal with the Siamese government that would send major military equipment to the Southeast Asian kingdom. The deal, which includes an increase in imports of consumable goods by the Kingdom of Siam, is expected to result in future negotiations that could lead to a major trade deal between the two countries.

The full details of the formal deal have yet to be released to analysts and economists, but what has been made available is the list of certain goods and weaponry that will be traded. The deal includes the trade of over 100 K21 vehicles, of which the amount will increase over the years. This is one of the most significant trades made by the Empire since its creation.

K21 infantry fighting vehicles / Ministry of Defence

Contrary to popular belief, this deal is not only one of military interest in the region. Trade Minister Cho Myung-rae announced shortly following the meeting of the delegations that the Empire will also be increasing trade of popular goods such as high-quality soju to the Kingdom and multiple consumer goods. This portion of the deal is considered to be a form of 'insurance' by the Trade Ministry for a future free-trade deal. According to a trade expert in the ministry who has opted to remain anonymous, this trade deal with Siam will be one of the biggest deals of recent years in South East Asia and will be "extremely beneficial to the Korean people, like astronomically beneficial, like you have absolutely no idea how beneficial this is gonna be." The expert was on this tangent for at least 10 minutes before needing to catch his breath.

Seoul mayoral election: Who could be, or are, candidates?

Jung Sang-hyun, Seoul University Professor

SEOUL– Seoul is once again entering yet another by-election for its mayor; the second in the past 10 years. However, unlike the previous one, this one is sure to have a large list of candidates. From a former president to an incumbent State Counselor, the number of potential candidates could not be more unique. The following list is a compilation of potential and declared candidates for the role.

Yıldız Haet-sal - The current Minister of Unification under Yeonguijeong Tae Ku-min. A long-time member of the People's New Party for Reform, Yıldız hails from a Turkish-Korean family, being the daughter of one of the first first-generation Turkic people to settle in Korea. Experts speculate that Yıldız, a former candidate for the position in 2004, will seek the position again despite her current position in the State Council. Her office has refused to comment on any speculation of her political aspirations for the second-strongest public office in the country. If elected, she would be the first female mayor of Seoul.

Lee Myung-bak - The former Yeonguijeong from 2008-2013, serving with the Future Korea Party. He lost re-election in 2013 after the Evergreen Korea Party won in a landslide due to an ongoing scandal in the government which led to a court trial that Lee was found not guilty in. He is currently a member of the National Revolutionary Dividends Party after Future Korea refused to let him back in after the trial. Lee announced his candidacy shortly after the announcement by Empress Geunhye of the election date. Lee previously served as mayor from 2004-2008, until he was elected as the Yeonguijeong. If elected, he would be the first mayor to be elected in a non-consecutive term, and the oldest to be elected.

Han Myeong-sook - The former chairwoman of the Evergreen Korea Party and a former candidate for the position in 2012, in which she lost to Oh Se-hoon by a very slight margin. Han would later serve as the first female Deputy Yeonguijeong under Moon Jae-in, and is so far the only person to actually have held the position. Han has refused to say whether or not she will run but has stated that she is open to the idea of seeking the office again. If elected, she would be the first female mayor of Seoul, and the oldest to be elected to the office.

Oh Se-hoon - The immediate predecessor of former mayor Park Won-soon. Oh resigned in 2011 after losing a referendum on school lunches, and is reportedly interested in seeking the office again. Oh, who previously ran in the 2018 parliamentary election, in which he lost in Gwangjin, has refused to state whether or not he intends on seeking the office he once held. If elected, he would be the first mayor to be elected in a non-consecutive term.

LEADERS OF THE LARGEST NON-PARLIAMENTARY PARTIES MET WITH PRIME MINISTER AND LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION TO DISCUSS ELECTIONS LAWS

Despite the constant feeling of nervousness coming from the EU leadership regarding Serbian elections laws, not much has changed for the last two decades. Serbia is among the most conservative political systems when it comes to these laws, making it practically impossible to enter the parliament if you're not a member of either Democratic Party (DS) or Social Democratic Party (SDP), two largest parties which dominate political life in Serbia since the fall of communism. Third but smaller Demochristian Party of Serbia (DHSS) has had minor representation as a sister party of DS, but that coalition fall apart in 2017 and since then DHSS also went out of the National Assembly.

By staying out of parliament, Serbian political parties are left without any financial support from the national budget, which makes it extremely hard for them to even survive. Starting from 2004, when Serbia joined the European Union, officials from Brussels have multiple times raised concerns on the problem of representative democracy in Serbia, but they were always pacified by Belgrade's Cabinets one after another with promises that elections laws will be revised when time is right. Since right time hasn't come for years, three leaders of the current largest non-parliamentary parties - Demochristian Party of Serbia (DHSS), Democratic Front (DF), Ecological Movement Greens (EPZ) - have met last month, as soon as the state of emergency caused by pandemic was over, and signed a joint resolution demanding that work on set of new elections laws start immediately, ones that will make National Assembly far more representative, or else they will seek justice in front of the European Court of Justice.

Threatened by the large public scandal that might had caused fall of the government, officials from both DS and SDP, after clearly refusing to address the issue for decades while preserving their political monopoly, have finally agreed to revise the matter. This morning, meeting took place in the headquarters of the Government of Serbia. It involved following leaders:

Balša Božović, Prime Minister of Serbia and leader of Democratic Party (DS)
Saša Janković, Leader of the Opposition and leader of Social Democratic Party (SDP)
Nikola Selaković, leader of Demochristian Party of Serbia (DHSS)
Andrija Mandić, leader of Democratic Front (DF)
Aleksandar Olenik, leader of Ecological Movement Greens (EPZ)

After the meeting, they have informed the public that serious work will start on adopting the laws so that it become significantly easier for smaller parties to come into the National Assembly. For most of analysts, this marks the beginning of the end of three decades long era of bipartisan domination in Serbian political life. Prime Minister and leader of DS which currently holds 58% of seats in the National Assembly, told press:

"We had serious talks today, regarding the beginning of revising the set of elections laws. We intend to finish that job prior to the beginning of the new convocation season of parliamentary work in September, and we intend to do that in constant dialogue with non-parliamentary parties and our counterpart in the National Assembly. Today, we have agreed that important issues that should be addressed with the new laws should involve introducing the threshold level, regulating the status of regional parties and deciding on the date of next elections. Currently, largest issue that remains is a date of new elections. Non-parliamentary parties demand holding the early elections as soon as new laws are adopted. However, this Government is against such a scenario. There are two reasons for why are we against that. First, it has never been a practice that elections take place in the same year as the latest change of elections laws happens. Parties need time to prepare for elections in the new conditions which require time, despite all the enthusiasm. Secondly, we are anyway to have regular elections in the April of 2021, which is less than a year from now, so we don't think it's rational not to stick to that agenda. Anyway, whatever the final decision is on this and any other issue that might come out of the changes we intend to pass, the public shall be informed regularly. Thank you."

Analysts are united in their belief that another obstacle for having early elections is certainty felt within DS that they're not going to be able to keep their majority of 58% in the National Assembly with more than one party on contest this time.

From Emira al-Nejd's 2020 GENERAL ADDRESS TO THE STATE OF QATAR

As of 2020, the Trucial State of Qatar stands at a turning point. The nation has the potential to rise into a great regional economic power, or to slip under the thumb of the more ambitious. At the same time, the Middle East stands at a similar precipice, in which it must decide between regional cohesion and fragmentation; Qatar may very well be a central part of the direction it takes.

ECONOMY
Qatar’s budget continues to run at a surplus in 2020 despite shocks introduced in recent months. The primary focus of Qatar’s economic
policy as it enters the new decade remains in fostering continued economic growth and achieving economic self-sufficiency. With these goals
in mind, the following areas will be addressed:

INVESTMENT
  • Both internal and foreign investment will focus on securing supply of essential commodities. The Saudi blockade which began in 2017 highlighted the weaknesses in our national supply chains. Under the current economic plan, Qatar is set to totally eliminate dependence on foreign importation of essential goods by 2024.

  • Continue strategies of investment diversification in order to buffer the country’s reliance on oil and natural gas revenue.

  • The QIA’s Mustaqbal Initiative will pioneer research and investment in emerging industries. The new decade will bring about rapid advancements in the field of computer technology. In order to remain competitive with the US and China, Qatar must have its finger on the pulse of the emerging technology market.

DOMESTIC DEVELOPMENT

  • State-owned companies will commit a portion of their profits to the continuous development of existing capital and resources in order to ensure economic growth.

  • New technologies will allow Qatari companies to increase their worker-efficiency, thus reducing their dependency on expatriate workers.

QATARIZATION

  • Qatari nationals should be maneuvered into executive positions within Qatar-owned joint companies.

DIPLOMACY
Qatar remains locked in a difficult diplomatic situation as the Saudi blockade of the country continues. Diplomatic efforts as the country
enters the next decade will be centered around developing bilateral relationships around both the Middle East and the wider world. The
following issues will be addressed:

GCC BLOCKADE
  • Qatar will press for dialogue with other GCC members in order to come to an understanding and ultimately the termination of the blockade. At the same time, it will NOT submit to pressure by foreign governments to push Qatar against its own best interests.

TRADE

  • In concert with aforementioned economic policy, Qatar will use its diplomatic standing to acquire what commodities cannot be produced domestically through trade with its allies. It is essential that importation is engaged with countries with whom Qatar has or is developing strong diplomatic ties with, in order to mitigate the risk that supply will be disrupted by future developments.

REGIONAL

  • We will work to strengthen diplomatic ties with our neighbors in the Middle East. Diplomatic efforts will be put toward developing both strong alliances with individual nations as well as multilateral frameworks aimed at creating a strong and independent Middle East.

  • Promote the ideals of peace, justice, and equality under God across the whole of the Middle East. Qatar will commit resources to elevating the quality of human rights in those areas within the greater region where they are most needed.

  • Qatar will uphold its commitment to Arab reformist organizations to which it has pledged its support.

GLOBAL

  • Foster relationships with the West, as well as Southeast Asia. Our nation conducts business in its own backyard and with countries around the world. Advancing diplomatic relations with the rest of the world’s major powers will help to solidify Qatar as a “doorway to the Gulf.”

MILITARY
The Qatar Armed Forces operate to ensure the defense of the nation against the increasing threat of foreign aggression. While Qatar shuns
militarism as an offensive doctrine, it will continue to maintain a domestic force powerful enough to deter outside forces with hostile
aspirations. Qatar’s future military policy will include the following:
  • The State of Qatar maintains a purely defensive military. While small special operations teams may be deployed for military assistance programs within allied nations abroad, the main military force will remain committed to the protection of Qatar’s territorial, coastal, and maritime assets and people.

  • Defense budget will increase from 6.92 to 7.65 billion riyals ($2.1B USD).

  • The country has chronically relied on outside military presence for strategic deterrence. Under the new defense policy, military capabilities will grow in order to decrease reliance on outside military forces.

  • Modernization programs will be initiated in order to make best use of the military personnel available to the armed forces. Programs such as the Army Ordnance Division’s Consolidated Infantry Weapon System will increase the effectiveness of the individual soldier on the battlefield.

DEFENSIVE FORCE MULTIPLICATION

  • Qatar’s armed forces will follow a doctrine of “defensive force multiplication.” As a smaller nation, Qatar does not possess the manpower of many of its neighbors. This deficiency will be overcome through the adoption of equipment and tactics which allow small units to mount a defense against a much larger attacking force. Defensive strategies include concentration of firepower within lightweight units and combined arms composition which allows for a mobile defense on a highly condensed scale.

SOCIAL
Qatar has risen as a beacon of social progress in the Gulf. Our country hopes to continue this progress through the adoption of progressive
social policies aimed at improving the quality of life of Qatari citizens.
  • Future social policies will address concerns over human rights or workers living in the country. Conditions of expatriates will be particularly addressed.

  • The Ministry of Interior will overhaul medical infrastructure in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic in order to ensure that future biological threats can be more effectively dealt with.

  • Several policies will be introduced over the coming years which introduce a number of environmental regulations. These will include regulations regarding the emission of carbon dioxide, aimed at combating the causes of climate change.
