Fair enough but you still want to make sure you get something out of it regardless, god knows I'm just glad I managed to sort out an apprenticeship after I messed up at uni.

I already knew that, it's the pre requisite for joining NS.

Do those two things and you'll be alright, don't and you'll end up with heaps of student debt and no way to pay it. Hope it all goes well at any rate. A very casual response to such misfortune

I've fought in just about ever climate and environment there it. The tropics, mountains, deserts, plains, you name it. But the worst, oh man the worst was that hell they call Antarctica. Your equipment would freeze solid, and you couldn't touch metal with bare hands lest your flesh be ripped off. You'd be blinded by the blizzards, lose all sense of direction, and before you knew it you were wandering into the enemy lines while you were out trying to take a dump. You'd wake up in the morning to find the trenches filled up with snow. Patrols would be lost when the ground in front of them collapsed and revealed a hidden crevice or canyon. When the frontlines shifted, we'd reoccupy positions just to find all the bodies from the last battles still there, never having decomposed. But the worst thing, the thing that keeps me up at night the most, that haunts my every waking moment.... the penguins. They started scavenging the bodies of the dead left out in the open, and soon they acquired a teste for human meat. They would attack unsuspecting or vulnerable soldiers, leaving nay a trace of them. During the Long Ice March, after our defeat at the Battle of New Alexandria, they set upon us in packs. I've hated and feared those birds ever since.

Oh, bad timing..... On a brighter note let's honour that legend with one of his quotes at a time, beginning with; "I'd love to visit Russia, but the bastards murdered half my family"

Que tú vivieras
Que tus ojitos jamás se hubieran
Cerrado nunca y estar mirándolos

Tarde o temprano a estar contigo
Para seguir, amándonos.

So the war in Afghanistan will supposedly be over. And now we have politician after politician coming out saying that apparently they've known for the longest time its been a lost war, a waste of time. Many of these same politicians who've been beating the drums of war at every given opportunity for the past two decades.

And what do we say to the men and women who've served there, who've bled there? To the families whose sons and daughters came home in flag draped coffins?
Sorry that you wasted the best years of your life? Sorry for your lost limbs, for seeing your buddies die beside you? Turns out it was pointless the entire time, that none of it meant a thing?

And the Afghans? What about them, the people who've suffered the worst from decades of American foreign policy mismanagement? What about the ones who've been loyal to us, who've helped our cause and put not just their lives but the lives of their families in danger? Will we help them, will we offer them visas and the chance of a new life? Or are we going to abandon them like the Kurds, or the Vietnamese and Cambodians before, and leave them to the slaughter?

And what about the future? Will we raise serious questions about our time there? Will we look ourselves in the mirror and try to find some truth? How will we memorialize the fallen? Will we need to go back one day, maybe sooner rather than later?

Afghanistan is another issue America needs to have a long discussion about, a demon it has to have a reckoning with. But I think many people want to forget about it already. Forget about it, like they've been doing for years now already.

And so the cycle will repeat.

one pretty significant issue with conflicts like Afghanistan is that it takes more time than one administration (or even one party) will have to deal with the issue and effect whatever plan they have in mind, and naturally the next administration is going to have a different plan they want to implement which again takes more time than they have in office

and I do not know how this would be realistically solved

there is also what I think is a problem with American culture: Americans want to settle things as quickly as possible, so take the most direct route to get things done, even if it not necessarily the most strategically sound one, and they have little patience for long-term commitments

I just wonder how, or even if, we'll memorialize the war. I think there's already a movement started to establish some kind of memorial for the Forever Wars, but I'm not sure one will ever get built.

Think I'm going to buy a visual novel that a friend recommended, even though I'm not big into that sort of stuff. I downloaded the demo though and I got some great laughs out of it

Also, are there a couple more people here that are about to go to uni?
