one pretty significant issue with conflicts like Afghanistan is that it takes more time than one administration (or even one party) will have to deal with the issue and effect whatever plan they have in mind, and naturally the next administration is going to have a different plan they want to implement which again takes more time than they have in office

and I do not know how this would be realistically solved

there is also what I think is a problem with American culture: Americans want to settle things as quickly as possible, so take the most direct route to get things done, even if it not necessarily the most strategically sound one, and they have little patience for long-term commitments
