Imagine Denethor surviving, getting the bitterness out of his system, and somehow getting along with the new generation... Okay, in Arwen's case, a much older generation. Her birth year is T.A. 241. Actually, Denethor was born in T.A. 2930, and Aragorn in 2931. They might have exchanged memories and grown to like each other? A reconciliation between Denethor and Faramir is difficult to imagine though. Madness or no madness, better stay away from the parent that tried to murder you. That seems an obstacle too high to overcome in one human lifetime.
Wouldn't a son always love his father?, and more in that horrible situation! In my mind Faramir was one of the fairest in Middle Earth, noble as few, so why not reconciliation and Denethor playing with his grandchildren?

The case of Denethor surviving would present an interesting dilemma. If we go with the fantasy-leaning notion that Denethor was mind-controlled via the palantír, and that his attempted murder of his son was not his own decision, then a vision of Denethor, healed from the influence and playing with his grandchildren, becomes possible.
On the other hand, Faramir might love his father, but he would also, hopefully, love his children. What's more, Faramir and Eowyn would be responsible for their children's well-being, until the children are of age. This responsibility weighs heavier.
What kind of family event would it be: Watching over almost-kinslayer Denethor playing with the children sits Eowyn with her sword across her knees, ready to jump in and kill him off for good, in case of a relapse. Doesn't sound like a good plan. He might use one of the children as a human shield. Or, Denethor might attack one of the children, get killed by Eowyn, and as a result, the children are traumatised either way.
This latter approach, a person who has attempted murder might try murder again, is more reality oriented than the magical mind-control approach above.
I think the second approach is more plausible in Tolkien's world. Tolkien characters don't usually get passively corrupted by outside influences out of the blue. They make decisions. Any corrupting influences need internal tendencies and will to latch onto.
A surviving, genuinely changed, well-intentioned Denethor would care more about others' well-being and peace of mind than about his own wishes. He would out of respect voluntarily stay away from his grandchildren.
This version resonates with the concept of love being not just an emotion one feels, but something which shows up in attitude and actions.
