The Higher Up the Mountain

Dame Enid Lyons was underwhelmed by the little she'd seen of Mr Hull. She was politely disappointed in the efforts of Hughes to bring back detractors and she was ashamed to see Earle Page the voice of the Australian Right Wing, the man didn't know the difference between city and town let alone whatever hellhole he crawled from and the metropolitan areas that were responsible for most economic activity. She was disgusted to see him declare a woman's place "at her husband's arm" and then give her a forgiving smile. What could she do? She returned to her office that afternoon and collapsed into her seat. Exhausting, that's how she described being the smiling stooge of the right wing.

"I lived there," she muttered under her breath as she looked out the window across the grassy plains and at the fence that marked the Lodge. She bit her lip. The conservative movement would go nowhere with Hughes at the helm. She turned to look at the board opposite her desk on the other side of the wall. She enjoyed collages, on the board was a collage of newspaper clippings, at the top was the one dated to 1931. Lyons Promises Recovery, Wins Election!. Immediately underneath was the one dated to January of 1937. The Passage of an Era: Joseph Lyons DEAD. She had torn down all the ones between those two and replaced them with the recent headlines. The one from January 19 struck a chord. Curtin becomes Prime Minister: Promises Election After Funeral.. Then came CURTIN WINS LANDSLIDE - Right Wing scrambles to form credible opposition. She scoffed as she read that last one. Finally, the last clipping she'd put up; Opposition a joke: NO possible leader!.

She turned to the large mirror on the wall and smirked as she thought of it in her head, 'a woman's place is at her husband's arm', not this woman. Not Enid Lyons.
