The silver lining of increased difficulty is that each exam you achieve the top grade in is significantly more valuable than it used to be. If any idiot could get an A* in whatever exam, why should anyone care about that exam? It wouldn't tell you anything at all about someone's academic capabilities if it did not discriminate A candidates against B, C and Fail candidates.
