TODAY IN THE WEST

this day, a great treat:
it is Haikuesday, the day
that got me hooked here

the sky's the limit!
write of food, feelings, and fun
or Zoran's cookies*

*it's Chocolate Chip Cookie Day

(If you need it, we're posting a haiku syllable counter in the WFE above).

Follow our Quarterly Elections by visiting https://www.westpacific.org/forums/index.php?/forum/87-campaigning/! We are in the nomination stage, so if you are a member of the Hall of Nations, nominate folks and consider the candidates.

Since Haiku have become important to me:

  • Be descriptive, especially of nature or something beautiful or fascinating you observe or sense.

  • Make use of contrast in space or size: "as the leaf flutters / the whole forest breathes and sways / while mighty wind blows"

  • Have some snark or punniness or other emotions. "make up your mind, snail! / you are half inside your house / and halfway out!" (by Richard Wright)

  • Technically, haiku adhere to a format of 5 syllables / 7 syllables / 5. but you can try out 3-5-3, other formats, or play around by letting syllable counts spill over.

  • Ambiguity can be OK! Example: "silent prayer—the quiet humming / of the ceiling fan" (from the Haiku Anthology)

    • is the ceiling fan the quiet humming or is it the silent prayer? is the writer saying that the prayer is good or bad? is anything happening? note how description, contrast, ambiguity all work together to make this haiku thought provoking
