The answer appears to be a qualified yes. Turns out Queen Erika was reported to be assassinated on October 27, 2016. That looks like the last newspaper article...

Gieruland wrote:I must admit that I, too, have been accepting this claim for years without so much as a second thought. Apparently it has been repeated so often that it has become some sort of truth to many so now I'm not sure if there is any truth in it. I tried to find some comparison to e.g. Dutch political parties but another version of the political compass seems to be used in the Netherlands ('conservative/progressive' instead of 'libertarian/authoritarian') so I'm not sure if they match, but using the information on the pages mentioned below, democratic presidential candidates of the USA seem to be in the top right corner, leaning to the middle (with Trump in the top right corner, leaning to to top right corner, so more authoritarian right); the UK's conservative party seems to be matching Trump, while the difference with Labour is enormous, which is in the bottom left corner. Dutch and Belgian progressive political parties tend to be in the top left corner and Dutch and Belgian conservative parties in the bottom right. But I probably need more than these two websites to check this.

https://qz.com/1748903/how-2020-us-democratic-candidates-compare-to-global-politicians/

https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Politiek_spectrum#Meerdimensionale_benaderingen ('links' = 'left'; 'rechts' = 'right', data from the Dutch national resp. Belgian federal elections in 2012 resp. 2010)

I'm often one to ruminate on an idea for a while, so I apologize if my timing is jarring.

I'd start by saying that I don't think the conservative/progressive axis in the Dutch example is a good proxy of authoritarian/libertarian; however, I do think that it improves upon the general weakness of the linear left/right mental model by splitting the analysis between a cultural and an economic dimension. Of course, with every such additional refinement, these models become more complex, and therefore it becomes increasingly difficult to concisely communicate a person's or group's political stance. Instead, simple models that are strongly reliant on historical and cultural context inevitably return to prominence for convenience's sake.

As for the Quartz article, it is indeed illustrative of how one can imagine the placement along left/right and authoritarian/libertarian dimensions, but I don't really agree with their classifications in the US. As they make clear in the article, the website does not disclose its exact methodology, but I would tentatively say it looks like they put more weight on what these politicians say than what they do (yeah, trust politicians to tell you the truth...). As a center libertarian (-0.38, -5.23) according to the same website, https://www.politicalcompass.org/, it may not be any surprise that I view the single most important dimension of any mentioned here to be the authoritarian/libertarian axis. This is the axis that I think to be universally important across history and cultures, yet widely disregarded in common parlance. Perhaps this should be promoted?

Does it? No idea. The idea was good, done by Eluvatar. But probably due to some money matters( like revenue sharing between Barry and Elu) the thing got undone.

I can't say that I'm familiar with the politics behind it. I thought Afforess (Eluvatar?) just didn't want to keep developing the extension, but when I look at the thread, there's been a tiny bit of maintenance as recently as December 2019. I've been operating under the assumption that what I experienced with Firefox was standard across the previously supported browsers, but it looks like that was incorrect, as there might be some accessible features for Chrome/Chromium.

At any rate, I definitely have the ability to enable NS++ on Pale Moon and Basilisk, and see the regional news going back to October 2016 and roleplay news going back to August 2018. I even appear to have the ability to submit articles. This appears to be functionality that is not available for NS++ on Brave (a Chromium based browser).

Edit: Spoke too soon. Brave is now showing the newspaper options too.
Edit2: Or not. Looks like they might have been options that populated because of me hopping between browsers.

It is with great sorrow that I announce the demise of the RL player behind the nation Ladymorrighan, founder and Kaiserin of our ally region, the New Reich of Bunicken . Her association with our region was for a long time and we were greatly benefited by her advice on critical issues, particularly when the region was raided in the recent past. She was a towering figure in the nationstates arena and I am told, she was particularly active in our discord channel as an ambassador. No reason is known regarding her death.
We, the nations of the Commonwealth of Crowns mourn her death and hope that the New Reich of Bunicken will take her vision for the region to greater heights.
We offer our deepest condolences to the Kaiser and his subject nations on these trying times.

Kaiserin Morrighan von Wermarn-Arnburg Hindenburg, of Königsberg, passed away unexpectedly today at the age of thirty-seven.

Lady Morrighan is survived by her husband Kaiser Friedrich von Hindenburg, her two sons by a previous marriage, her beloved daughter, and a great many friends.

Lady Morrighan was born at Wiota Royal Hospital on 29 April 1983. The founder and ruler of Bunicken, she married Kaiser Friedrich on 28 November 2020. A paragon of statesmanship and class, Lady Morrighan was well regarded by all in Bunicken and throughout the world.

A funeral is to be held on 23 January at 20:00 U.T.C. in the Kirche von Jan Hus, with a reception to follow. Archbishop Wilhelm von Wermarn-Arnburg will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Lady Morrighan’s life. Flowers and condolences may be sent to the Royal Palace in Königsberg.

The real-life person behind the character of Ladymorrighan has passed away. In respect to her vision for Bunicken, this obituary has been written in-character, so as to honor her memory.

I'm not entirely sure, but the NS forum download link remains up (viewtopic.php?p=17306782), as does the hosting site (https://nationstatesplusplus.net/). Norton hasn't detected anything malicious either, but the ease with which it could potentially be exploited is unknown to me. Personally, I have the extension installed on Pale Moon and Basilisk but disabled unless I have a specific intent to use it.

Atlantis is holding Winter Games on the 1st Feb to celebrate our region's 18th Anniversary. You are welcome to participate if you wish. Details in the dispatch.

Welcome to the Atlantis Winter Games
Held 1st February 2021 to commemorate the 18th Anniversary of Atlantis.

To Commemorate the 18th Anniversary of Atlantis, Winter Games have been proposed to bring nations sporting heroes together to foster friendship and peace between their nations. The Games will begin on 1st February 2021.

Host | The Games | Sign-Ups | Participants

The Host
The Games will take place at the snow-enveloped Lemming Mountains in The Teachings of Lemmingtopias. The Lemming Mountains, in the North of the country, have for millennia been considered sacred ground and are dotted with monasteries, temples, academies, hermitages and thousands of shrines to the Hellenic gods and Lemmingtopian mystic spirits. The largest complex is the Winter Palace, which will serve as a backdrop to the sporting events and which is the min residence of His Holiness the Lemming Sage outside of the Capital. The Winter Palace is also the resting place of the mummified body of the Divine and Perpetual Emperor Lomax during the winter months. Medal recipients and select dignitaries will be invited to a private audience with the Emperor in his mausoleum.

Athletes, Dignitaries and spectators will arrive at the Lomax Winter Station after a journey from any major city or airport in Lemmingtopias. From here, a funicular railway takes you high above the station to the Winter Palace Complex. Limited access to the Helipad can also be arranged on request. Here, Athletes will be welcome by the Lemming Sage prior to being transported to their team facilities and the athlete village. Rooms are available at the Winter Palace for foreign dignitaries. With the exception of a few pensions near to the winter palace, Hotels for spectators are available at any of the nearby Mountain Towns, most being around one hour's transportation to the site of the Games by rail or coach.

The ancient stone amphitheater has been extended with temporary seating to allow for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies while modern venues for the sports already exist and have been upgraded for the occasion. To ensure the safety of the ancient and sacred site, special routes have been laid out for spectators to follow with free tickets required to access the Winter Palace Complex or any of the nearby monasteries and temples. Temporary facilities have been installed to make the area comfortable for visitors as well as to ensure the safety of the site. Some mountain peaks have also been made available for visitor climbing.

The Games
Several Events across four sports will take place:

  • Bobsleigh

  • Ice Hockey

  • Figure Skating

  • Cross Country Skiing

I know there are a lot of players in the CoC who aren't in the US, and so may not have a horse in this race, but I was curious if anyone had an opinion on what was going on with r/wallstreetbets doing a short squeeze on GameStop, AMC, Blackberry, Nokia and others, and how a lot of brokers, most notably Robinhood have responded by halting new buy orders...

Absolutely beautiful.
It’s ironic how they froze new investments, being named “Robinhood,” but 2021’s off to a hell of a start, and I love it.
Didn’t invest, though.

So anyway, something rather unusual appears to have played out very recently with the WA Delegate's position...

In that vein, welcome Haunted by screams and Guy 14. How fare you this day?

Thanks for keeping the region safe, Hella.
This incident takes us to the debate whether we should keep the WA position non executive. It is evident that we are on the radar of unscrupulous elements.
All WA nations, please endorse
The Imperial Union of Scandinavia as our delegate. This is urgent to dismiss the regional officer position created by raiders.

Sad to see this happen here too. On The Great Monarchical Nations we had the same issue a week ago.

It's like they are going for the monarchist regions now👑. But I'm happy that you could get rid of them.

Lucky I happened to log in and saw the TG from Helladria. Removed the regional officer created by the raiders.
Due to the nature of the new emergency, I am temporarily withdrawing all executive powers from the delegate. In this, I have the concurrence of senior natives, Helladria and Borduriaa.
If the decision needs to be reversed, the regional officers may intimate me with their majority decision.

Excellent timing. If the Delegate's position remains non-executive, there will be little left for concern, so long as you don't CTE.

If we do allow the Delegate's position to return to being executive, I would like to suggest that we convene the region's WA members and any interested non-WA regional members, and decide upon a system that includes an urging for WA members to endorse a designee.

I had been wondering why I was being endorsed, but I’m happy everything’s sorted out. I honestly hadn’t thought much of it, as I hadn’t seen any Black Hawk scouts come in yet.

ORDER :

All nations are requested to join WA and endorse The Imperial Union of Scandinavia as our delegate.

(Even though the delegate is non executive now, we do not want the raiders to take the delegate seat at any cost.)

Till a democratic setup is established, I , the founder of the CoC hereby establish a Supreme Governing Council comprising of the following 8 states to take any decision deemed necessary for the security of the region. The members are:

Helladria: Chairperson
The Imperial Union of Scandinavia: Vice Chairperson
Borduriaa
Wantsum
Neru
Vetega
Sergeantia
Norengland

The Council may take a decision by 2/3rd majority of the available members with a quorum of 3 members during my absence, if any.
Long live the CoC.

Helladria, Wantsum, Vetega, Borduriaa, and 3 othersNeru, Sergeantia, and Pinicada

I think this is a good decision. Although I do login frequently, still nothing like an active founder. Good that OT logged in and made the WA delegate non executive now. It takes a load off our back for at least 60 more days.
In case of any eventuality, we shall have a delegate ( Scandinavia) and a battery of ROs to fight out the raiders. They can't grieve our region with old members like Vetega and Nor and Neru well entrenched here with a lot of influence.

Then to open as chair of the Supreme Governing Council, I believe we are now taking appropriate action to ensure regional security. Having a non-executive WA Delegate is a key measure, particularly in a region that has only a hand full of WA members. Barring a CTE by Osberg-Thitania, this is the only measure that would be necessary. Nonetheless, CTEs are a risk, and having additional members support a designated Delegate is our next line of defense. The only other additional measure I can think of is to ensure that we have allies with whom we are in good standing.

Therefore, if there are any members of the WA in this region who do not object, please endorse The Imperial Union of Scandinavia. If you do object, please let us know why. Finally, if you are not in the WA, please consider joining for the sake of supporting regional security.

Should anyone wish to contribute to this discussion, you may consider the floor open.

Although currently I have no "intention" of CTEing (LOL !!!), if I ever feel drowned by RL, then I know whom to entrust the founder account. It's Helladria. The last time, it was Norengland, who did a tremendous job, but he is currently overloaded, I suppose. Vetega, is also bogged down lately, but he shall remain the sheet anchor with a mind boggling influence.
Rest assured, I will not go on a hiatus without handing over the founding nation , albeit temporarily. Regarding this discussion, I wish to make it clear that we don't intend to make the region an oligarchy. The power still rests in the hands of the Crowns Assembly of Nations. If the majority of the citizen nations wish a change in the status and return to a more participative democracy, I am just a TG away.
In the meantime, the Supreme Governing Council will take all decisions by 2/3 majority with a quorum of 3 nations.

For now, Please do endorse The Imperial Union of Scandinavia. Thanks Ionysia and Neru for the endos.

Wantsum, Vetega, and Borduriaa

I agree with any change necessary to keep us afloat. These have been trying times, but we just need to stay focused and keep moving forward.
