What's up with all the conspiracy theories lately? We are getting more and more and they are getting dumber and dumber as well.

Don't people understand Occam's razor?

For instance "Jewish space lasers were behind the California fires". Let's just take that one logically.
First, there are 4 possibilities for forest fires: lightning, accidents (from car wrecks to electrical malfunctions), general stupidity and arson. All of these are possible of course so Occam's razor don't really help us there.

Now, if you want to commit arson would you: a: get a box of matches or B: start a secret space program, build a high tech satellite and a space laser?
A would cost you a few cents while B would cost billions. Also, the chance no one noticing you driving out in the wood, start a fire and get out of there is somewhat higher then no one noticing your secret space program. So how could anyone be that stupid?

I mean, there have always been conspiracy theories and some makes even sense (I for one believe that the reason razors have multiple blades is not that you get a better shave then you get with old fashion safety razors but that Gillette can charge 50 times the price for a product that does a worse job but looks fancier) but the last few years they seems insaner then before.

Are people getting dumber or is it just people being bored due to the pandemic killing their social life?

A match box costs 4 Indian rupees in India ,which might be 11 cents. A Gillette razor blade is 50 Indian rupees, which is something like 0.6 $.

I don't think that Occam's razor would be sharp enough to provide provide a close shave.

Each generation of people that has come after mine has been less and less capable of critical thought, as well as maintaining a sound moral compass.

I wonder if thats how my grandparents think of my parents to my generation as well? Probably.

Common sense is dead, coffee cups have gone from styrofoam to recycled paper, now they have the words hot printed in 4 languages on them. Thats not news, but drinking iced coffee, which costs more and is 75 percent ice year round is. They drink it in the winter. So they take a cold beverage that costs about 5x more and then add so much ice that the volume for liquid is reduced so that maybe you pay 4.50 for 6 oz of crap cold coffee.

And the millennial generation, the ones after them and so forth just keep buying it.

I am not a conspiracy nut but i for one am glad a fool and their money are so easily parted. Imagine if they brewed their own at home and used that savings yearly to donate to the snowflake politicians. They would have taken over the country by now with their Feel the Bern stickers!

It amazes me that if people are that worried about this whole non pollution thing is that they would brew their own coffee and put it in their own coffee cup to carry around. To bring their own food to work so they don't buy fast-food that is making people unhealthy which in turn is driving health insurance rates higher. Maybe not buy products that come from other countries like China, you know a country that really doesn't worry about pollution what so ever.

So if they really worried about pollution, why don't they buy products made in their own country. Buy fruits/vegetables from their local farmer markets, meats from the local butcher, I mean less travel the product took to get to you, the less pollution created and the fresher it is. Not to mention you are supporting your own local economy which in turn benefits you.

Yes , this concept is also known as Swadeshi in India. Swadeshi in Hindi means buying goods made in their own nation and shunning foreign goods. The Swadeshi concept was prevalent during the 19th century in India, during the freedom struggle movement in India against the British colonial government. The Indian freedom fighters also started the Swadeshi movement , they stopped buying British made goods and also picketed shops selling imported goods from Britain, even imported sugar was picketed. This caused great economic losses to the British colonial government in India. Selling British goods was one of their main source of revenue, apart from other indirect taxes on salt , and also pressuring peasants and landless labourers to pay taxes. This was one of the main causes behind the Revolt of 1857, or the first war of Indian independence , seething anger on the East India Company , exploiting the natural resources of India and the Company's dirty ways of exporting Indian cotton and selling it in India in the form of clothes at a low price , though the revolt was a failure ;it ultimately led to the demise of the British East India Company in 1858. Mahatma Gandhi was a pioneer of the Swadeshi movement. This concept soon lost hold in India , after 1991 as the Indian economy was liberalized and foreign goods were imported at a large pace. The Indian peasant was impoverished so much that he lost his land and he could not pay taxes to the British Government.Robert Clive , the Governor of Bengal from 1765 - 1766 continued the exploitative policies of the East India Company. This caused the Bengal Famine of 1770 in which over 10 million Indians died, and some resorted to indirect cannibalism . Clive was also corrupt, gaining assets worth 9 million £.Clive was the one who was responsible for the Famine. Clive was luckily called back to England , and put on trial for his corrupt activities back in India.

I think buying local goods can increase productivity and economic growth of the local economy.

The socialist republic of astrakhan wrote:I think buying local goods can increase productivity and economic growth of the local economy.

Indeed. And a lot of the worlds pollution are coming from people being stupid to earn a couple of cents.

For instance: Norwegian fisherman fish herring. The herring are shipped frozen to China. Chinese factory worker takes out the gut and bones. The herring are sent back to Norway frozen where people eat it. That is slightly cheaper but it does not only pollute the environment, it also steals local jobs and makes the herring taste far worse and it is just how things work nowadays. You pay slightly less for a worse product and sod the environment.

And of course with less jobs around that slightly cheaper herring will cost you in the end since a shrinking local economy eventually will mean people have less money to go around.

From an environmental standpoint, it isn't always best to buy a product made from the same country though. If you live in Alaska, buying something made over the border in Canada is better for the environment then something made in Florida while it is better for the US economy to buy the American product.

I think the real problem isn't that people are getting dumber but that they are thinking more short term today. If I buy a cheap herring today this months salary will last a bit longer even if that might mean I get poorer in a year. Particularly companies seems to have stopped thinking long term. If you fire a bunch of people from the research department the stocks go up for some reason and you save some money short term but it will hurt your company long term since it will take longer to get out new and improved products and the quality of those new products will be worse.

I think the Ice tea and coffee is one of those stupid trends. Celebrities are doing it so regular people do it too even if it doesn't make any sense and is expensive.

As for the razors, it is looks. Having 5+ blades looks super fancy while my good old old safety razor looks old. The fact that I only change blade every 2 months, that hairs constantly get stuck between those blades and that it takes me about a minute to shave off a couple of days beard with a safety razor but at least 5 minutes with a Fusion 5 blade doesn't seem to matter and that isn't counting that the fusion 5 blade has a lot of plastic while a simple safety razor is just iron and better for the environment. Oh, and I cut myself less with the safety razor too. How a product look seems to matter far more then if it actually is good or not.

When possible, yes.

There is a bit more to it, quality do matter, buying stuff that breaks down quickly is bad even if it is locally made since it promotes incompetence and is bad for the environment.
Also, function generally trumps appearance. That isn't true in all cases. Having a good looking piece of furniture might be worth more to you then how comfy it is but with things like razors and toothbrushes you wont impress anyone with how they look anyways so you want to go for how good they are as well as price there.

It is certainly worth buying locally produces food even if it cost a bit more. That is not only great for the environment and support local jobs but in case of some kind of disaster that means there will be local food sources in the future too. Hopefully you wont need that last one.

Yes this is similar to the concept of GDP , or Gross Domestic Product. Developed countries have high GDP , due to trading with other nations. Now i will explain , how this GDP works, from the American and Indian context. I would like to know more abt other nations in the world too.

From the American context, let's say you're buying a PlayStation from BestBuy for 300 $. The money you give to Bestbuy , not only becomes BestBuy's profit. But it would also contribute to the growth of China's GDP and it's GDP would increase. All PlayStations in the world are made in China. So you're indirectly contributing to China's economic growth too. Let's say you're buying an Allen Edmonds shoe , for a 100 $ , which is made in USA . You are contributing indirectly to the growth of the American economy and its GDP increases in this scenario. The Dollars you spend here will not be added to China's GDP.

Now , from the Indian context , let's say am buying Britannia biscuits for 10 Indian rupees from my neighbourhood More supermarket or the Reliance supermarket. Since Britannia is an Indian company , and it's products are made in India. Here am indirectly contributing to the growth of the GDP of India. Now, am also buying some China made kitchen utensils for 200 Indian rupees. Here by buying Chinese utensils , not only the shopkeeper makes a profit , but also this would contribute towards the growth of China's GDP .

The only way to curb the growth of China's economy and to make China bow before United States and other countries is to not to buy Chinese products. By doing so China's economy gets more powerful and bigger at the same time. Buy locally made products and contribute to your nation's GDP, indirectly.

Absolutely, couldnt agree more. Also I see that political tolerance for failure is significantly lower, so things are just done to satisfy in the moment and create the path of least cost.

That's certainly one way to hurt China. Another way to do it would be if the government finally woke up and realized that the cold war really ended in the 80s, that's 30 - 40 years ago. Russia ain't the big scary problem to the world anymore, it's China, and yet it seems like the US government is happy to remain complacent to China, while just ticking off the Russians more and more, which is something that the United States certainly does not need.

Sure, Russia isn't the optimal place to be for most people, and it's domestic politics are quite authoritarian, but at least Russia isn't committing genocides, throwing people in concentration camps, purposefully starving its people, and the like, which is more than can be said for China.

Russia isn't a major threat to the United States nowadays. And already Russia has a lot of Cold War era military equipments with many Russian tanks from the Soviet era.And Russia also has a lot of restrictions, such as not being able to purchase cheese from foreign countries.China is a rising threat to the world order. You are right Amestris.Russian army also has outdated military equipment. Russia also is on China's side along with Chinese vassals such as Pakistan and N.Korea and countries such as Iran and Turkey. For Russia to be able to compete with USA, it needs to upgrade it's army equipment and it's crumbling Soviet era military tanks. Also , torture of Uighur minority by China needs to be stopped, Chinese products are also made through forced labour in concentration camps with Uighur workers.
