I don't know a lot about my great-grandfather's experience in WWII as my grandfather doesn't like talking about it, but from what I've heard, he was part of a group of footsoliders cornered by the Germans whilst travelling up the Rhine, and he escaped by jumping into the river and floating away to safety, allegedly, he later died of a disease he received from the river when my grandfather was three years old.
