Korean General Election 2023

The much anticipated Korean Election had arrived, after just over a month of campaigning tens of millions of people walked to their polling stations, many millions of others had voted early either via postal ballots or early polling stations. It was the first election of any kind in Korea since the 'March Coup' or 'Mansae Coup', public approval of the monarchy had continued to hover around 80%, incumbent Prime Minister Sim Sang-jung had taken a small dip in approval at first before it recovered after her re-appointment as Prime Minister.

The campaign had focused on the two main battling parties, the socially liberal Transition Korea, and the conservative People Power Party formerly known as the Future Korea Party. Four other 'third parties' likely to cross the 3% electoral threshold were the People Party; Green Party Korea; Korea Economic Party; and the Mirae Party, the latter is allied to the governing Transition Korea party and runs unopposed by them in Gwangju and the surrounding Jeolla on both the single-district and party list ballots. The People's Party is more loosely aligned to the conservative People Power Party, and have some local agreements in the single-member districts not to run against one another.

As the results from the single-districts trickled in it became evident that the Transition-Mirae Alliance had dominated the vote, the People Power Party had also faired fairly well in comparision to their predecessor almost doubling their total, with their ally the People Party winning twelve seats. The other minor parties had concentrated their efforts into a handful of single-districts rather than a large spread of seats. The Green Party won their main target seat of Deogyang-gu 1st romping home 56.4% of the vote and another of their targets, the Korea Economic Party picked up one of its target seats. After the release of the party list votes and seat allocations, the full results are as follows;

• Transition-Mirae Alliance - 시대전환-미래당
Leader: Sim Sang-Jung
41.3% (+1.6*), Seats: 331 (+48*)

• People Power Party - 국민의힘
Leader: Kim Chong-in
24.5% (+6.2*), Seats: 185 (+75*)

• People Party - 국민의당
Leader: Ahn Cheol-soo
9.5%, Seats: 43

• Green Party Korea - 녹색당
Leader: Seong Mi-seon
10.5% (+7.0), Seats: 36 (+27)

• Minsaeng Party - 민생당
Leader: Yu Sung-yup
9.7%, Seats: 33

Prime Minister Sim Sang-jung thanked the Korean people in the early hours of the morning for giving her and her party a mandate to govern, and thanked the opposition for a clean campaign. King Daeshim is due to visit the National Assembly in the next week for the official opening of the new parliamentary session and will read out the governing parties main priorities in government for the coming parliamentary year. The victory makes clear the Korea will continue to lean to left for the forciable future until the right can find a figure to unite around.
