...Russia and Britain were at war. They were fighting. Alaska was easy money for Britain, so Russia did the only thing it could. Also, Britain still has an empire, or the remnants of it. And they still have a close relationship with Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. India and the US are also good friends of the UK right now.

Um, no there wasn't. California joined as a free state in 1850. If there had been any slaves, they would've had very small numbers.
