100% YES! We had an Army Cadet unit at my school. So much fun. Camping, drill, history, tactics, ETC. Best was the bug annual camps when multiple battalions would meet up and you’d have 300 to 1000 cadets running around. Base visits where fun, and getting to the use the guns was also good.

The Soviet Union wasn't an ideal system, like everyone knows, but the "no unemployment" fact wasn't made up. The Soviet Union really was providing employment in different places, from state-owned shops to factories that were emerging tens of thousands, bringing goods and even some kind of prosperity to the Union. After 1965, the Union even was suffering from a constant lack of working hands, if to believe the financial almanacs. Thus they were heartily welcoming immigrants (treating them like their own citizens), banning abortion, and punishing people for parasitism (usually they were punished by prosaic public shaming or forced labor on the streets). The thing is, that wasn't much of a Stalin's achievement though. Almost every socialist system existent was focused on making everyone (except for the children and the elderly, ofc) working, to make everyone earning money honestly, and not rot as a person and as a member of society.
Btw, even if Trotsky managed to stop behaving like lazy a$$ and protected his reputation after Lenin died, and eventually "puppeted" or even removed Stalin, he'd do almost the same that Stalin did, cause Stalin just adopted Trotsky's economic programme. But not only the program, methods too - Trotsky in his critical works wasn't saying anything against dekulakization and forced industrialization (cause he was a supporter of it even back in 1925, but these measures were criticized by Stalin for "extremism" then, what an irony), but criticized the bureaucratization instead.
Although don't trust liberals, Trotsky wasn't a democrat, he'd never allowed anything except the things that Lenin didn't prohibit.
