Bleak Futures
The war has been won. The nation has been united under a shared banner, one of capitalism and democracy. But life isn't great in the new nation. The first election is delayed, first to 1951, then 1952, then 1954. The country lies in ruins. Its economy is completely gutted, its infrastructure barely holding up, and its police can rarely stop civil unrest. Famine inches ever closer as highways break down, and cargo ships refuse to dock at its rickety ports. The value of money plummets by nearly 98.7% in a few weeks. Martial law is implemented around the country as President Tri attempts to keep the peace. Millions were internally displaced as rebuilding stalled, then stopped completely. What had won them the war, complete destruction of key cities had come around to bite them.

Back to the Stone Age
Paldrona used to be the nation's industrial hub. It carried the entire economy on its shoulders. Until 90% of its infrastructure was burned down. The city was a shell of its former self. It boasted a population of 233,000 a far cry from the 1.4 million pre-war population. Many of its skilled workers would never return, as the nation suffered the biggest brain drain in history. Thousands of highly skilled workers fled the fledgling country, searching for better prospects abroad. But the government refused to give up on repairing Paldrona. Without it, the nation would surely fall. On an extremely fast-approaching deadline, workers focused on export-based factories. Goods that could prop up the dying economy in the short term were prioritized. The eventual plan was to phase those out, but that would cost more money than they had access to. But as long as the government spent money responsibly-And the President just bought a yacht. With less and less funding, the plan for eventually repairing more profitable, but expensive factories was scrapped. Paldrona would forever be scarred with the husks of its former industrial empire. This decision would cement the dying economy as export-based, as nearly nothing could be produced locally.

They Come by Sea
Chein-Qwtz was the largest port city in the nation by a significant margin. It served as a hub for Paldrona-produced goods to be sold, and foreign supplies to be unloaded. Through an extremely specialized, well-oiled workforce it achieved economic prosperity for itself; And the whole nation. But the massive complex was on life support. Just 177,456 of its pre-war population out of 846,000 returned to the city. Its docks had been demolished by the socialist VMS Supremacy which still lurked just a few miles off the coast. Through a series of extensive negotiations, the VMS Supremacy was brought back to shore. Its captain and the majority of its crew were sparred any legal consequences except for the gunners. All 40 of them were executed upon leaving the ship. Back in Chein-Qwtz the situation inland was not any less dire. Heavy urban fighting had damaged hundreds of buildings, with some fires still raging for months. It would cost billions to repair the city fully. And that's not factoring in the merchant fleet. Hundreds of expensive vessels, many of them cargo ships had scuttled themselves to avoid capture. With no ships, the government resorted to paying foreign companies to transport vessels. Soon the entire naval transport industry was dominated by foreigners.

The Former Capital
Redberd, the former capital was in ruins. Just 2% of its former residents remained, as services such as water, waste disposal, and electricity were sparse. The country had completely given up its former crown jewel. Its marble temples, modern apartment districts, and extensive military infrastructure had all been completely destroyed. The economic district, second only to Paldrona had burned to the ground during the three-year siege. Bodies still lined the streets as no one had bothered to pick them up. Independence Hall, a symbolic building representing independence was cratered. By 1951 the government officially relocated the capital to Cryen. The city was completely demolished just a few months later. The plan was to build a new city, Bluebird where Redberd once stood, but the project was never completed.

Rebellion....Again?
Although the democratic army had decisively won the war, many diehard socialists refused to surrender. Many of them retreated to the mountains and jungles, resorting to guerrilla tactics to cause as much harm as possible. With limited ways to combat them, the government simply ignored the problem. The rebels were under-armed, underfunded, and had low public support. Head General Adam considered them little more than "an annoying fly". So the government became content with isolating them, seeing as they really couldn't attack any major government facilities. However, the rebels weren't interested in attacking large settlements and military formations. Many of them focused on interrupting trade, destroying roads, and generally being a nuisance. They achieved great success with this strategy, causing the government to increasingly rely on foreign ships to transport supplies. One of their most notable attacks would occur on August 19th, 1952. A military caravan 13 trucks strong, transporting troops and much-needed supplies to Pandora was forced to travel through rebel territory to reach their destination. On a narrow stretch of road, with a sheer cliff to the right and a dense jungle to their left, the lead truck broke down. During the fifteen minutes that the caravan was stalled a group of 200 rebels began a devastating ambush. 54 soldiers and nearly 26 million in raw materials were lost. An interview with a surviving democratic soldier can be found below.

Ambush at Willows Crossing (Transcript)
The following is an interview with a surviving democratic soldier. All names have been redacted for privacy. Reproducing this transcript in any way, shape, or form is illegal, with a maximum fine of 13000. The following interview was conducted six days after the battle. Discrepancies with other reports, interviews, or news broadcasts are to be expected and everything featured in this dialogue is unconfirmed. Regardless, if you require further information, telegram James Gerret, the current archive manager.

Interviewer: "Let's start off with your name and rank. What are they?"

Soldier: "The name's [REDACTED], private of the 3rd Repair Battalion."

Interviewer: "Good. Now, what caused the first truck to break down?"

Soldier: "I don't know. It just stalled in the middle of the road."

Interviewer: "What was it carrying?"

Soldier: "They never told us. It didn't look like a troop transport, just a normal truck."

Interviewer: "Now what happened after the truck stalled?"

Soldier: "We stopped. We were stuck between some godforsaken jungle and a cliff. My mate [REDACTED] kept saying that a strong breeze would send the entire caravan off the cliff. I think he was just scared of heights."

Interviewer: "What happened to this 'mate' of yours?"

Soldier: "Think he's dead. They never recovered the bodies, did they? They said they would but the poor guy's parents never got the body. You guys ever gonna go back there?"

Interviewer: "My condolences but that isn't the topic of this interview. When did the ambush begin?"

Soldier: "Damn greenshirts. But I'll play along. The ambush began a few minutes after we stopped. A missile of some kind just came whizzing out of the jungle. Knocked the second truck in line right off the cliff. Don't think the driver survived. Everyone started panicking, and our commander ordered everyone out of the truck. Barely remembered to grab my rifle."

Interviewer: "There is no 'playing along'. This is a matter of national security. Failure to comply will result in immediate discharge, heavy fines, and possibly execution. Continue."

Soldier: "So I'm hurrying out of the truck and another missile hits the third truck in line. Whatever was in it must have been explosive because it just blew up. Sent metal and shrapnel everywhere. So I continue getting out of my truck, right? And I'm one of the last still on it. So the guy in front of me just collapses, and I trip over him. I try to shake him up, but he's got a hole between his eyes. And that's when I realize we're being shot at."

Interviewer: "Do you know why they didn't target the first truck in line?"

Soldier: "To keep us trapped? We couldn't escape because the first truck was still in the way. A few guys tried to help get it running but the driver was already dead. Some socialist sniper put a bullet in him."

Interviewer: "That's what we assumed. Continue with the story."

Soldier: "So I get out of the truck and hide behind it with the rest of my mates. And we start returning fire. Think the guys in the other trucks were doing the same. The socialists were so densely packed you couldn't shoot into a tree without three bodies falling out. Right next to us is this other troop transport. I think the majority of them got killed before they could get out because only four people were huddling behind it. I manage to lock eyes with one of them. From the looks of it, he was a commander. So he mouthes 'help' to me, right? So when I'm turning to tell my commander a hear a boom right behind me. I turn and the truck, along with the four guys behind it is gone. There's smoke and debris everywhere. A socialist rocket had blown the bloody thing right off the cliffside."

Interviewer: "Do you know who was firing those rockets?"

Soldier: "A socialist with a rocket launcher? I don't know any socialist rebels on a first-name basis. So anyway, after that, my commander ordered us ut from behind the truck. So we're all running like chickens with our heads cut off and firing blindly when suddenly we hear a scream from behind us. Me and a few other guys turn and it's our commander with-"

Interviewer: "Who was your commander?"

Soldier: "Never learned his name. I was only under his command for a few days anyway. So I turn and see our commander with a grenade at his feet. It turns out it was his own grenade, he just dropped it. So before we could do anything it blows his legs off. And there's no way he's surviving that, right? I mean, his insides had become his outsides. It was like he had combusted. So one of our guys walked over to him, and well...He shot him dead. Put him out of his misery and shut off the screaming."

Interviewer: "Who was the person to finish off your commander?"

Soldier: "...Couldn't tell ya."

Interviewer: "You were part of that unit for five years, correct?"

Soldier: "I just didn't recognize him in the heat of battle. I mean maybe he didn't even shoot the poor bugger. It could have just been my-."

Interviewer: "Enough. Continue with the story."

Soldier: "So our commander's dead and everyone's being shot at. A guy next to me got his shoulder blown off. And then suddenly the shooting ended. It just stopped. Maybe the damn [REDACTED]s in the trees buggered off? The attack probably lasted just a few minutes. I think I was one of the lucky ones. Nearly everyone was injured, and a few dozen were dead. Not to mention that all four resource trucks were heavily damaged. Don't think the tech guys were able to salvage anything."

Interviewer: "Thank you for your time. Now report back to your unit. You can consider your leave over."

END TRANSCRIPT

The Red Massacre
Following the ambush at Willows Crossing the government finally started addressing the socialist rebels. In an event known as 'The Red Massacre' hundreds of democratic troops were deployed across the country in a coordinated extermination campaign. By using family as leverage, hundreds of socialist rebels turned themselves in. Those that refused had their parents, spouses, children, and siblings arrested for high treason. Those that still refused to surrender had their families executed. Using this method nearly every socialist rebel surrendered in just a few weeks. The majority of these surrendering insurrectionists were sent to labor camps, producing low-quality goods for exporting. Others were forced to repair cities, excavate build sites, and mine. By the time 'The Red Massacre' ended, only 103 rebels refused to turn themselves in. The families of those 130 rebels were executed. Over 900 people faced execution at the hands of democratic firing squads. Hundreds more were sent to labor camps. It's unknown how many civilians died in the camps, but it's estimated nearly 400 captured rebels were worked to death.

The Brave 103
The remaining 103 rebels became known as 'The Brave 103'. Their ranks were bolstered by non-socialists, who simply despised the current government. Over time they formed the 'Red Right Hand' an organization accused of terrorism by the government. They would continue to interrupt trade and military operations in the eastern region for decades to come. Many of these rebels would form splinter groups, notable ones being the Black Claw, Ivory Tusks, Freedom Coalition, Economic Justice League, and the Glimmering Jewels. These splinter cells would spread across the nation, fueling decades of civil unrest.
