Yes, it does sound disgusting until you've tried it. But if you're not a mayonnaise fan, other pasta salads are made with an oil/vinegar dressing, sometimes with a little tomato sauce thrown in. Furthermore, I've never made potato salad with mayonnaise. It's made with fresh tomatoes, celery, olives, green pepper (sorry) and just a little oil and water, with a tiny splash of vinegar.
