I really love this:

https://youtu.be/lOWfCVQBixs

What I love about it is the start of verse 4, Dylan paying tribute not just to Woody Guthrie but to 'Cisco and Sonny and Leadbelly too.'

Dylan received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2016. His lyrics are without peer.

Boy was it controversial, though... I supported the move, as I love Dylan, but it caused quite a debate.

I wonder if this trend will continue -- that of nominating songwriters for Literature prizes? In my opinion, lots of popular music falls into the category of "Poetry."

I am thinking especially of hip hop. I am no expert in the genre, and only listen to it peripherally, but I dabble here and there. For my money, the very best of hip hop is at least as lyrically rich as a Dylan song, and is unparalleled among popular music in that regard. There is just so much creative word play and intricate rhyme schemes and lyrical rhythm on display there. For a genre so often obsessed with bravado and aggressive masculinity, the artists within it often play with language so virtuosically as to rival many 19th century aesthetes.

Aren't songs just poetry set to music.

I think the debate about giving the Nobel Prize for Literature to a musician centres around the extent to which the words rely on the music. The fact that they're set to music means that (in most cases, at least) they take on a completely different structure and form - e.g. often more repetition, rhyming in a way that might seem overdone in a poem - so that if you took the words away from the music, they wouldn't be half as effective.

I think awarding literary prizes for a work which is both poetic and musical is perfectly fine. I'd consider it a separate form from poetry, but still a valid literary form.

I have to admit I really don't know any hip hop, would you mind linking an example of what you were thinking of?

Sure, I'll see what I can rustle up. But let me again stress that this is not an area of expertise for me, and that when I was into it was well over a decade ago, and gained merely through blind groping in the dark.

I'll start with the album that introduced this whole concept of hip hop being about something more than what I was seeing on mtv:

Amethyst Rock Star - Saul Williams

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhQQseFcTGE&list=OLAK5uy_k6-MaOinm0erkzuSur6W-sPBI3R3UdL8c&index=4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZiX2lZRE5g&list=OLAK5uy_k6-MaOinm0erkzuSur6W-sPBI3R3UdL8c&index=8
This one's a bit of a story with a conceit in the beginning, so just bear with it for ~1min

The entire album is incredible. There's another song, "Coded Language," but I'm having trouble linking it. It's basically just a poem put to music. In fact, Saul Williams started out as a poet, so he works well as a bridge, but is sort of cheating, too...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVtpXvzzXiA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bxq6j2thkqs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnH24GNhLgo

And here's a few more recent tracks that have managed to break through to my awareness:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWw23KV139w

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4oHBoeuZ10

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7wlwYh1UCk

These last three are really choice and may in fact be better than any of the rest.

I'll also include Meek Mill, because I live in Philly and this song is basically the anthem of the city:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_yT5LVf5G0

Wow, that stuff's pretty cool. I particularly liked this:

This music definitely matches the likes of Bob Dylan in terms of the lyrics. Musically I'll admit they're not quite my thing, but thanks for sharing anyway, I enjoyed them :)

No problem, it was a fun walk down memory lane for me, as well.

Yeah, it's not my preferred choice of music usually, but on occasion it hits the spot.

By the way, check out the official music video for that Denzel Curry song you liked. There's a couple disturbing elements in it, so I didn't link to it, but it's quite a thing to behold.

The North Pacific Army Deploys Troops to Lazarus

On the orders of Minister of Defense Bobberino, The North Pacific Army was deployed in support of the delegacy transition from outgoing Chief Executive Officer Imkiville (Imki) to incoming Chief Executive Officer Treadwella (Tubbius),few days ago.

The North Pacific Army deployed 16 nations in support of this transition. Delegate Pallaith expressed his appreciation to Imki for her service as Delegate of Lazarus and for her conscientious work in restoring unity and stability to Lazarus. Likewise, he congratulated Tubbius on his new role and wished him the very best.

The Raid of Farkasfalka

Few weeks ago,the region of Farkasfalka witnessed a huge support for Nazism.
It all started with a small discussion of Europe's history.Soon few members like Kustonia started denying Holocaust that Jews went through during Hitler's period. He said it was all a propaganda and fake report by the allied forces, every evidence of Holocaust were artifical and fake. Some of the members even started supporting him.
Soon chants of "Heil Hitler" went through the RMB,discussing the period of Nazism and praising it.

It was then that the Gentleman's Coalition decided to reply to their love for Nazism and raided their region, held the delegacy for 1 update cycle (12 hours) and destryoed every single piece of their WFE and Dispatches.
Surprisingly the GC Forces didn't met any resistance for 5 hours.

Later, after the raid, the Farkasfalka administration decided to punish Kustonia for his deeds by only giving him a short lecture, and denying to ban him or remove hin from the admin panel stating that,"It is not under our control, those were his personal opinions".

It was a strong message that hatred, terrorism and Nazism won't be ever tolerated on NationStates and whenever such evil forces raise their heads, good guys are waiting to practice their raiding skills.

Fascists Got Scared

With the Gentleman's Coalition raid on Farkasfalka, the fascists have been scared and gone underground. Most of their activities have gone inactive, and WAD position scrapping all the authorities in fear of raid.

The Dictatorship of Scath as well have wrapped up their WA Delegate position, taking back all the authorities in fear of a strong retaliation from the Democratic and Anti-Fascist forces.
Last month they threatened the Union of Democrats and their allies to raid, soon they got a condemnation letter from more than 6 powerful regions, that include,Redlandia,India,Kebabistan and Novus Lucidum. All the regions have openly condemned the fake news and fascist propoganda of Scath.

When we got to speak to some of their ex-members,they said,"Scath secretly endorses Fascism, their locked Discord channels are full of such things."
It seems only applying an 'Anti-Fascist' tag won't help you until you can show your actions.Another of their ex-member said,"They started abusing me when I told them about my decision to leave their region,I reported the thing to the Moderators and all of them got banned for 4 days. You can check their RMB activity last 3 weeks ago,it's all empty, simple, because their posting privileges were revoked."

It seems that now the Fascist forces need to stop their hatred ideology and try to help make NationStates a better place by cancelling their malicious plans.

Europeia Senate Elections

With the latest Senate term coming to an end, new Senatorial elections were held on the 22nd March 2019. Originally, only 5 candidates stood for standing but with a later entry by Former Senate Speaker Aexnidaral, 6 citizens vied for the coveted seats. Due to the low number of candidates running, the Senate was decided to have the minimum of 5 seats for this term.

The results of the election follow:

Common-Sense Politics (35 votes), Lloenflys (35 votes), Winged Bear (29 votes), Aexnidaral (27 votes), JayDee (20 votes), and United Vietussia (20 votes).

While CSP, Lloen, Winged Bear and Aexnidaral were confirmed to be on the Senate, JayDee and United Vietussia tied in votes, and thus a by-election was held soon after. With 24 votes compared to JayDee's 15 votes, United Vietussia was elected as the 5th member of the 69th Senate.

Veteran Senator CSP was formally nominated for Speaker, being uncontested within the newly formed Senate. He easily gained unanimous support from his fellow senators.

As all candidates have previous experience on the Senate, this senatorial term promises to be strong. In his opening post, CSP welcomed back his fellow senators before commenting: "we serve at a time of great consequence. I am confident that each of you will play a crucial role in ensuring that we, as an institution, rise to the occasion. "

Ridiculous. And hilarious. Immigrant Song was a nice bonus.

Also ridiculous, and for no particular reason, awhile back I decided to "translate" Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" into prose:

(I didn't want to post one of those whopping huge dispatch links to the rmb)

Iv just cooperated a Peace and co-operation treaty between South Pacific and India. This is great news for both of our regions.

Many thanks to Minister Hindu mahasabha, a brilliant friend to me and the entire of the South Pacific.

Ministry of External Affairs | India
Home Treaties

Preamble

In an effort to create a powerful bond between India and South Pacifc, the following treaty of friendship is declared to be agreed upon by both government entities. With this treaty, and the spirit of cooperation that lead to its design, may our two regions find peace and good fortune together and trust that it will make us stronger, even in times when trouble may try to overcome us.

Article I – Mutual Recognition

1. The members of this treaty recognize the current governments of each region and the ideologies that lead to their creation, and agree to recognize any legal government that follows, and any legal successor appointed by either delegate.

2. Each member region recognizes that the sovereignty of each government is inherently within the delegate, the decisions they make, and the authority they maintain as symbols of unity for both regions.

3. Both regions agree to recognize any territories occupied, captured, or under the general authority of either region as an extension of its sovereignty, and any territorial claims maintained by either party member to this treaty.

Article II – Diplomatic Relations

1. The members of this treaty shall maintain diplomatic connections with one another, both in game and on the respected forums of each region, and under no circumstance remove either one of these connections in an effort to ensure positive diplomatic relations.

2. Diplomats of both regions will make an attempt to hear out one another, and engage in open and respectful discussion so that the possibility of strain on this relationship is prevented, and that even from the most taxing situations, creating prosperous circumstances for both regions may result.

3.Signatory regions shall provide an embassy for the other signatory and shall provide a representative from their region who will act as an ambassador from their region.

4.Each signatory will endeavor to keep the other up-to-date on their regional affairs.

Article III – Mutual Defense

1. Both regions agree to never take up arms against one another, nor undertake any action that is aimed at the overthrow of the legitimate government of either region, or to hinder its operation.

2. Neither region will engage in espionage against the other under any circumstance.

3.Regardless of military alignment, or type of operation being conducted, both members of this treaty agree to respect the sovereign right of each region to use their force however they like, as long as it does not break any provision in this treaty.

Article IV – Culture

1. Both regions agree to allow the promotion of each other’s cultural events on their regional forum, and regional message board, but will refrain from sending mass telegrams to one another’s regions in order to advertise these events.

2. The members of this treaty will respect the cultural environments within each region, and work to promote the prosperity of these cultures so that they may flourish, and further influence the world for the better.

3. The signatories of this treaty agree to host joint cultural events whenever they see fit in an effort to increase the richness of both regional cultures, and the depth of the relationship this treaty creates.

Article V-Dissolution

1.If either regional government is considering withdrawal from this treaty, representatives from both regions must first meet and make a good-faith effort to find a solution to the issue(s) causing withdrawal.

2.If that good-faith effort fails, then either member of this treaty may withdraw by posting a notice in the embassy of the other region.

3.There will then be a two-day period before the treaty cancellation is considered final.

4.Termination of this treaty shall not be seen as an act of war or hostility by either side.

Unfortunately (or fortunately?) this provided no nostalgia...

But it did provide a laugh. Snake was the best part.

Most of these types of early internet videos I am unfamiliar with. I knew of homestar runner through my younger brother. I think I wasted most of the early internet days playing Runescape (all ridicule accepted)

Heck, I only discovered this gem a month or so ago:

And I genuinely think it's a great song. I feel it's a bit unfortunate that his head motions turned it into a bit of a joke, because he displays some serious talent there.

"Badger Badger Badger" came our in '03 and was also listed as one of the top five internet fads of all time by PC World in 2009. So many years ago.
