The Kingdom of Hanover (1814–1866) was a German state established after the Napoleonic Wars and ruled by the House of Hanover. It was closely connected to Britain through a personal union with the British Crown from 1814 to 1837, ending when Queen Victoria inherited the British throne. With its capital at Hanover, the kingdom played an important role in northern Germany until it was annexed by Prussia after the Austro-Prussian War in 1866.
